Abstract

A polyaxial pivot housing for an external fixation system, comprising a collet body having a threaded portion; a spherical member configured to be partially received by a cavity that is formed in the collet body, the spherical member having a threaded post that is configured to attach to a support member of an external fixation frame; and a threaded locking collar that is configured to orientationally lock the threaded post with respect to the external fixation frame by compressing the spherical member into the cavity as the threaded locking collar is mated with the threaded portion of the collet body.

Claims (31)

1. A polyaxial pivot housing for an external fixation system, comprising:

a collet body including a threaded portion and a threaded bore hole configured to attach to an external fixation clamping assembly;

a spring mechanism housed within the threaded bore hole,

a spherical member configured to be partially received by a cavity that is formed in the collet body, the spherical member including a threaded post that is configured to attach to a support member of an external fixation frame; and

a threaded locking collar that is configured to orientationally lock the threaded post with respect to the external fixation frame by compressing the spherical member into the cavity as the threaded locking collar is mated with the threaded portion of the collet body.

2. The polyaxial pivot housing of claim 1 , further including a compression collet that is housed inside the cavity of the collet body, the compression collet being configured to compress a portion of the spherical member as the threaded locking collar is mated with the threaded portion of the collet body.

3. The polyaxial pivot housing of claim 1 , further including a retaining ring, the retaining ring having a plurality of teeth that are configured to engage the spherical member as tension is being applied to the external fixation frame.

4. The polyaxial pivot housing of claim 1 , further comprising a wave spring that is configured to engage a portion of the spherical member as tension is being applied to the external fixation frame.

5. The polyaxial housing of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of protrusions on the spherical member that are configured to engage a plurality of corresponding recessed portions on the collet housing as tension is being applied to the external fixation frame.

6. The polyaxial pivot housing of claim 1 , wherein the housing includes a provisional locking feature that allows an alignment of bone fragments held by the external fixation frame to be slightly adjusted by overcoming a friction fit that is caused by compressive forces and soft tissue tension, the provisional locking feature being actuatable without the use of a tool.

7. The polyaxial pivot housing of claim 1 , wherein the housing includes a definitive locking feature that allows bone fragments held by the external fixation frame to be secured in a defined alignment orientation, the definitive locking feature being actuatable by a removable wrench that is configured to mate with an external surface of the threaded locking collar.

8. The polyaxial pivot housing of claim 7 , wherein the definitive locking feature is actuated by turning the removable wrench about the external surface of the threaded locking collar.

9. A polyaxial pivot housing for an external fixation system, comprising:

a collet body including a plurality of fingers and a threaded bore hole configured to attach to an external fixation clamping assembly;

a spring mechanism housed within the threaded bore hole;

a spherical member configured to be partially received by a cavity that is formed in the collet body, the spherical member including a post configured to attach to a support member of an external fixation frame; and

a locking collar configured to engage the fingers of the collet body to orientationally lock the post with respect to the external fixation frame by compressing the spherical member into the cavity.

10. The polyaxial pivot housing of claim 9 , wherein the spring comprises a provisional locking feature.

11. The polyaxial pivot housing of claim 9 , wherein the collet body includes a threaded portion, such that the locking collar is mated with the threaded portion of the collet body.

12. The polyaxial pivot housing of claim 9 , wherein the locking collar is configured to cause the fingers of the collet body to deflect radially.

13. The polyaxial pivot housing of claim 9 , wherein the polyaxial pivot housing includes a provisional lock that allows an alignment of bone fragments held by the external fixation frame to be slightly adjusted by overcoming a friction fit that is caused by compressive forces and soft tissue tension, the provisional locking feature being actuatable without the use of a tool.

14. A polyaxial pivot apparatus for an external fixation system, comprising:

a collet body including a threaded portion, a threaded bore hole configured to attach to an external fixation clamping assembly, and a spring positioned within the threaded bore hole;

a spherical member configured to be partially received by a cavity that is formed in the collet body;

a post extending from the spherical member, the post configured to attach to a support member of an external fixation frame; and

a locking collar that is configured to orientationally lock the post with respect to the external fixation frame by compressing the spherical member into the cavity,

wherein the locking collar comprises a threaded portion configured to mate with the threaded portion of the collet body to definitively lock the orientation of the spherical member.

15. The polyaxial pivot apparatus of claim 14 , further comprising a platform configured to couple the collet body to an external fixation clamping assembly, wherein the threaded bore hole is formed in the platform.

16. The polyaxial pivot apparatus of claim 14 , further comprising a retaining ring, the retaining ring having a plurality of teeth that are configured to engage the spherical member as tension is being applied to the external fixation frame.

17. The polyaxial pivot apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the spring allows an alignment of bone fragments held by the external fixation frame to be slightly adjusted by overcoming a friction fit that is caused by compressive forces and soft tissue tension, the spring being actuatable without the use of a tool.

18. The polyaxial pivot housing of claim 14 , wherein mating the locking collar with the collet body allows bone fragments held by the external fixation frame to be secured in a defined alignment orientation, the mating configured to be performed by a removable wrench that is configured to engage an external surface of the threaded locking collar.
