Abstract

Techniques for measuring the visibility of video content presented within video players are presented. Initialization code is incorporated within a video player. The initialization code examines metadata associated with video content to determine whether to measure visibility information associated with the video content. If a measurement flag is encountered, the initialization code initializes measurement code to measure visibility information associated with the video content. The measurement code executes to measure visibility information associated with the video content and transmits the visibility information to a measurement server.

Claims (61)

1. A computer implemented method for measuring visibility of video at a client device, the method comprising:

requesting, by a video player of the client device, a first executable video ad of a plurality of executable video ads available from an advertisement server;

receiving, by the client device, the first executable video ad and a file corresponding to the first executable video ad, the file specifying a tracking event for the playback of the first executable video ad and a visibility measurement flag, wherein the tracking event comprises an event relating to a percentage of a duration of the first executable video ad being played;

receiving, in response to reception of the visibility measurement flag and by a player measurement component at the client device, a visibility measurement component;

injecting the visibility measurement component into a web page containing the video player;

playing, by the video player, the first executable video ad;

determining, by the player measurement component, that the tracking event occurred during the playback of the first executable video ad;

communicating that the tracking event occurred from the player measurement component to the visibility measurement component;

measuring, in response to the communication that the tracking event occurred and by the visibility measurement component, visibility of the video player playing the first executable video ad at a time of the tracking event by determining an amount of occlusion of the video player on a display of the client device; and

transmitting information representing the visibility measurements associated with the first executable video ad to a measurement server.

2. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein:

communicating that the tracking event occurred from the player measurement component to the visibility measurement component comprises communicating context information associated with the first executable video ad to the visibility measurement component; and

measuring visibility of the video player playing the first executable video ad at the time of the tracking event comprises using the context information to determine visibility of the video player playing the first executable video ad.

3. The computer implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the context information comprises:

information describing a URI of content associated with the tracking event.

4. The computer implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the context information comprises:

information describing a size and an offset of the video player playing the first executable video ad.

5. The computer implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the context information comprises:

information describing an elapsed duration of the first executable video ad at the time of the tracking event.

6. The computer implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the context information comprises:

information describing a volume of the playing of the executable first video ad at the time of the tracking event.

7. The computer implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the context information comprises:

an indication of whether the first executable video ad is being played in full-screen mode at the time of the tracking event.

8. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein measuring visibility of the video player playing the first executable video ad at the time of the tracking event comprises measuring whether the amount of occlusion of the video player playing the first executable video ad was less than 50% on the display of the client device.

9. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein measuring visibility of the video player playing the first executable video ad at the time of the tracking event comprises measuring a duration reflecting a length of time that the amount of occlusion of the video player playing the first executable video ad was less than 50% on the display of the client device.

10. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising, after injecting the visibility measurement component:

initializing the visibility measurement component; and

sending a message to a measurement server indicating that the visibility measurement component was successfully initialized.

11. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the tracking event comprises an occurrence of a time at which a predefined percentage of the duration of the first executable video ad has been played.

12. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising comparing the measured visibility associated with the first executable video ad to a threshold to determine whether the first executable video ad was viewable.

13. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising requesting, in response to the determination that the tracking event occurred during the playback of the first executable video ad, a URI associated with the tracking event.

14. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the tracking event is monitored during an entirety of the playback of the first executable video ad.

15. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining the amount of occlusion of the video player on the display of the client device comprises:

receiving size and offset information of the video player to determine a location of the video player on the display of the client device; and

determining, based on the location, a percentage of the video player that is viewable on the display.

16. A system for measuring visibility of video, the system comprising:

a client device comprising a video player that plays a video ad; and

a measurement code server, communicably connected to the client device, the measurement code server providing visibility measurement code that is executed by the client device, the visibility measurement code causing the client device to perform operations comprising:

receiving, from the video player, a tracking event for the playback of the video ad and a visibility measurement flag, wherein the tracking event comprises an event relating to a percentage of a duration of the video ad being played;

receiving, in response to reception of the visibility measurement flag and by a player measurement component at the client device, a visibility measurement component;

injecting the visibility measurement component into a web page containing the video player;

playing, by the video player, the video ad;

determining, by the player measurement component, that the tracking event occurred during the playback of the video ad;

communicating that the tracking event occurred from the player measurement component to the visibility measurement component;

measuring, in response to receiving the tracking event and by the visibility measurement component, visibility of the video player playing the video ad at a time of the tracking event by determining an amount of occlusion of the video player on a display of the client device; and

transmitting information representing the visibility measurements associated with the video ad to a measurement server.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein:

receiving the tracking event for the playback of the video ad comprises receiving context information associated with the video ad; and

measuring visibility of the video player playing the video ad at the time of the tracking event comprises using the context information to determine visibility of the video player playing the video ad.

18. The system of claim 16 , wherein measuring visibility of the video player playing the video ad at the time of the tracking event comprises measuring whether the amount of occlusion of the video player playing the video ad was less than 50% on the display of the client device.

19. The system of claim 16 , wherein measuring visibility of the video player playing the video ad at the time of the tracking event comprises measuring a duration reflecting a length of time that the amount of occlusion of the video player playing the video ad was less than 50% on the display of the client device.

20. A computer implemented method for measuring visibility of video at a client device, the method comprising:

receiving, by the client device, a first executable video ad and a file corresponding to the first executable video ad, wherein the file specifies:

a plurality of tracking events for the playback of the first executable video ad, and

a plurality of URIs associated with the plurality of tracking events, each of the plurality of URIs corresponding to one tracking event relating to a percentage of a duration of the first executable video ad being played and including a visibility measurement flag;

receiving, in response to reception of the visibility measurement flag by a player measurement component at the client device, a visibility measurement component;

injecting the visibility measurement component into a web page containing a video player;

playing, by the video player, the first executable video ad;

determining, by the player measurement component, that a first tracking event of the plurality of tracking events occurred during the playback of the first executable video ad;

communicating that the first tracking event occurred from the player measurement component to the visibility measurement component; and

measuring, in response to the communication that the first tracking event occurred and by the visibility measurement component, a percentage of the video player that is viewable on a display of the client device at a time of the first tracking event.
