Abstract

A staple cartridge assembly includes a cartridge body. The cartridge body includes a deck and a plurality of staples deployable into tissue. The staple cartridge assembly also includes a buttressing member removably attached to the deck and a firing member movable relative to the cartridge body during a firing stroke to deploy the plurality of staples into the tissue, wherein the buttressing member is completely removed from the deck as a result of the firing stroke.

Claims (36)

1. A staple cartridge assembly for use with a surgical stapler, the staple cartridge assembly comprising:

a cartridge body comprising a tissue-supporting deck;

a plurality of staples deployable into tissue;

a buttressing member removably attached to said deck, wherein said buttressing member comprises a narrow portion removably attached to said deck; and

a firing system comprising a firing member, wherein said firing member is movable relative to said cartridge body during a firing stroke to deploy said plurality of staples into the tissue, wherein said buttressing member is completely removed from said deck as a result of said firing stroke, and wherein said firing system is movable during said firing stroke to engage and release said narrow portion from said deck.

2. A staple cartridge assembly for use with a surgical stapler, the staple cartridge assembly comprising;

a cartridge body comprising a deck;

a plurality of staples deployable into tissue, said plurality of staples comprising:

a proximal staple; and

a distal staple;

a plurality of staple cavities, comprising:

a proximal staple cavity, wherein said proximal staple is removably stored in said proximal staple cavity; and

a distal staple cavity, wherein said distal staple is removably stored in said distal staple cavity;

a buttressing composite releasably attached to said deck, said buttressing composite comprising:

a distal portion; and

a proximal portion;

a proximal attachment portion configured to releasably hold said proximal portion over said proximal staple cavity;

a distal attachment portion configured to releasably hold said distal portion over said distal staple cavity; and

an actuation system comprising a firing member, wherein said firing member is movable relative to said deck to deploy said plurality of staples into the tissue during a firing stroke, wherein said actuation system is movable during said firing stroke to engage and disrupt said proximal attachment portion to release said proximal portion from said deck, wherein said actuation system is movable during said firing stroke to engage and disrupt said distal attachment portion to release said distal portion from said deck, and wherein said proximal portion is released sequentially before said distal portion.

3. A surgical fastening instrument, comprising:

a shaft; and

an end effector extending from said shaft, said end effector comprising:

a cartridge assembly, comprising;

a cartridge body;

a plurality of fasteners removably stored in said cartridge body, said plurality of fasteners comprising:

a proximal fastener; and

a distal fastener;

a plurality of fastener cavities, comprising:

a proximal fastener cavity, wherein said proximal fastener is removably stored in said proximal fastener cavity; and

a distal fastener cavity, wherein said distal fastener is removably stored in said distal fastener cavity;

a buttressing arrangement releasably attached to said cartridge body, said buttressing arrangement comprising:

a distal portion attached to said cartridge body; and

a proximal portion attached to said cartridge body;

a proximal attachment portion configured to releasably hold said proximal portion over said proximal fastener cavity;

a distal attachment portion configured to releasably hold said distal portion over said distal fastener cavity; and

a firing system comprising a firing member, wherein said firing member is movable relative to said cartridge body to deploy said plurality of fasteners into tissue during a firing stroke, wherein said buttressing arrangement is detached from said cartridge body in response to said firing stroke, wherein said firing system is movable during said firing stroke to engage and disrupt said proximal attachment portion to release said proximal portion of said buttressing arrangement from said cartridge body, wherein said distal portion is releasable from said cartridge body, and wherein said proximal portion is released sequentially before said distal portion.
