Abstract

A watersports boat includes a hull having an underside extending from a forward bow to an aft transom along a longitudinal centerline. The underside defines a running surface that contacts water when the hull moves therein. The underside includes one or more features that enhance the boat's performance.

Claims (46)

1. A watersports boat comprising:

a hull having an underside extending from a forward bow to an aft transom along a longitudinal centerline, the underside defining a running surface that contacts water when the hull moves therein, an aft running surface section of the hull having:

a re-positionable aft running surface section having a forward edge and first and second repositionable side edges extending aft therefrom;

a non-repositionable aft running surface section located forward of the re-positionable aft running surface section and having first and second non-repositionable side edges meeting the first and second repositionable side edges at the forward edge;

wherein the first repositionable and non-repositionable side edges and the second repositionable and non-repositionable side edges both form supplementary angles with the forward edge; and

wherein the re-positionable aft running surface section includes opposed port and starboard longitudinal edges extending between a forward end and an aft end thereof angled inwardly along the centerline from the forward end to the aft end; and

an opposed pair of extendable plates configured to move between a stowed position and an active position wherein, in the stowed position, a terminal edge of each stowed extendable plate is located aft the transom such that it does not substantially redirect water flowing past the transom, and, in the active position, the terminal edge of each extended extendable plate extends beneath the aft running surface section such that it redirects water flow leaving the aft running surface section.

2. The watersports boat of claim 1 , wherein the aft running surface section extends aft midship to the transom.

The watersports boat of claim 1 , wherein the non-repositionable aft running surface section includes port and starboard recesses formed in opposed corners of the aft running surface section and spaced outboard the centerline, each of the recesses extending from a respective step at a forward end thereof aft to a respective aft edge thereof, the step forming first and second non-repositionable side edges.

The watersports boat of claim 1 , wherein the re-positionable aft running surface section includes an aft edge defining the aft-most point of water contact and opposed port and starboard edges extending longitudinally toward the aft edge and forming the first and second repositionable side edges.

5. The watersports boat of claim 1 , wherein the re-positionable aft running surface section is substantially co-planar with the portion of the aft running surface immediately forward the re-positionable aft running surface.

6. The watersports boat of claim 1 , wherein the re-positionable aft running surface section is a bottom surface of a running surface extension member mounted to the hull at a running surface extension member receiving area recessed into the aft running surface section.

7. The watersports boat of claim 1 , wherein the re-positionable section of the aft running surface is repositionable about a pivot axis bisecting the centerline.

8. The watersports boat of claim 1 , wherein the re-positionable aft running surface section is re-positionable between a first position and a second position for adjusting hydrodynamic lift at a stern of the hull.

9. The watersports boat of claim 1 , further comprising a keel member having an apex lower than the aft running surface section, inclining toward the aft running surface section aft the apex, and meeting the aft running section forward the transom.

10. A watersports boat comprising:

a hull having an underside extending from a forward bow to an aft transom along a longitudinal centerline, the underside defining a running surface that contacts water when the hull moves therein, the running surface including a planing mode trailing edge and a pre-planing mode trailing edge;

an aft running surface section of the hull including port and starboard recesses formed in opposed corners of the aft running surface section and spaced outboard the centerline, each of the recesses having a substantially continuous upper surface extending from a respective step at a forward end thereof aft to a respective aft edge thereof; and

port and starboard aft hull side surfaces tapering inboard and downwardly toward the centerline moving aft, the upper surface of the port side aft hull side surface sharing a common boundary line with the port recess, the upper surface of the starboard aft hull side surface sharing a common boundary line with the starboard recess;

wherein:

the steps form the planing mode trailing edge where water disengages from the aft corners of the aft running surface section when the boat travels in planing mode and

the aft edge of the recesses form the pre-planing mode trailing edge where water disengages from the aft corners of the aft running surface section when the boat travels in pre-planing mode; and

no repositionable surface is located below the substantially continuous upper surface of either the port or starboard recess; and

an opposed pair of extendable plates configured to move between a stowed position and an active position wherein, in the stowed position, a terminal edge of each stowed extendable plate is located aft the transom such that it does not substantially redirect water flowing past the transom, and, in the active position, the terminal edge of each extended extendable plate extends beneath the aft running surface section such that it redirects water flow leaving the aft running surface section.

11. The watersports boat of claim 10 , wherein the port recess intersects a port chine and the starboard recess intersects a starboard chine.

12. The watersports boat of claim 10 , wherein the port recess intersects a port chine and a port corner of the transom and the starboard recess intersects a starboard chine and a starboard corner of the transom.

13. The watersports boat of claim 10 , wherein a medial section of the aft running surface extends aft beyond the transom and forms an aft most point of water contact with the hull when the hull moves forward through water.

14. The watersports boat of claim 10 , wherein the aft running surface section further includes a repositionable aft running surface section forming a portion of both the planing mode trailing edge and the pre-planing mode trailing edge.

15. The watersports boat of claim 10 , wherein the aft running surface section further includes:

a re-positionable aft running surface section having a forward edge and first and second repositionable side edges extending aft therefrom;

a non-repositionable aft running surface section located forward of the re-positionable aft running surface section and having first and second non-repositionable side edges meeting the first and second repositionable side edges at the forward edge;

wherein the first repositionable and non-repositionable side edges and the second repositionable and non-repositionable side edges both form supplementary angles with the forward edge

a repositionable aft running surface having a forward edge and opposed longitudinal edges and the opposed longitudinal edges and respective planing mode trailing edge meet substantially tangent to one another.

16. The watersports boat of claim 10 , further comprising a keel member having an apex lower than the aft running surface section, inclining toward the aft running surface section aft the apex, and meeting the aft running section forward the transom.

17. A watersports boat comprising:

a hull having an underside extending from a forward bow to an aft transom along a longitudinal centerline, the underside defining a running surface that contacts water when the hull moves therein;

the running surface including a bow section and port and starboard midship running surface sections separated by a keel member distinct therefrom and extending port and starboard of the keel line, the port and starboard midship running surface sections becoming more horizontal in an outboard direction at a greater rate than the keel member moving aft to an aft running surface section;

the keel member having a keel member lowest point lower than an aft running surface section lowest point, the keel member inclining toward the aft running surface section aft the keel member lowest point and forward a propeller positioned beneath the aft running surface section; and

an opposed pair of extendable plates configured to move between a stowed position and an active position wherein, in the stowed position, a terminal edge of each stowed extendable plate is located aft the transom such that it does not substantially redirect water flowing past the transom, and, in the active position, the terminal edge of each extended extendable plate extends beneath the aft running surface section such that it redirects water flow leaving the aft running surface section.

18. The watersports boat of claim 17 , wherein the bow section is V-shaped and the keel member is V-shaped.

19. The watersports boat of claim 17 , wherein the bow section defines a deadrise angle and the keel member includes opposed angled surfaces meeting at the lowest point at the deadrise angle.

20. The watersports boat of claim 17 , wherein the port and starboard midship running surface sections projected onto the centerline meet at an angle different than the deadrise angle.

21. The watersports boat of claim 17 , wherein the aft running surface section extends aft midship to the transom.

22. The watersports boat of claim 17 , wherein a medial section of the aft running surface extends aft beyond the transom and forms an aft most point of water contact with the hull when the hull moves forward through water.

23. The watersports boat of claim 17 , further comprising at least one ballast tank.

24. The watersports boat of claim 17 , wherein the aft running surface section includes (a) a re-positionable aft running surface section having a forward edge and first and second repositionable side edges extending aft therefrom (b) a non-repositionable aft running surface section located forward of the re-positionable aft running surface section and having first and second non-repositionable side edges meeting the first and second repositionable side edges at the forward edge, and wherein the first repositionable and non-repositionable side edges and the second repositionable and non-repositionable side edges both form supplementary angles with the forward edge.
