Abstract

Described herein are embodiments of stationary exercise machines having reciprocating foot and/or hand members, such as foot pedals that move in a closed loop path. Some embodiments can include reciprocating foot pedals that cause a user's feet to move along a closed loop path that is substantially inclined, such that the foot motion simulates a climbing motion more than a flat walking or running motion. Some embodiments can further include reciprocating handles that are configured to move in coordination with the foot via a linkage to a crank wheel also coupled to the foot pedals. Variable resistance can be provided via a rotating air-resistance based mechanism, via a magnetism based mechanism, and/or via other mechanisms, one or more of which can be rapidly adjustable while the user is using the machine.

Claims (41)

1. A stationary exercise machine comprising:

a frame;

a shaft supported by the frame;

a first disk operatively coupled to a first upper reciprocating member, and a second disk operatively coupled to a second upper reciprocating member, each of the first and second disks mounted eccentrically on the shaft;

a first handle operatively associated with the first upper reciprocating member and the frame;

a second handle operatively associated with the second upper reciprocating member and the frame;

a first lower reciprocating member and a second lower reciprocating member, each of the first and second lower reciprocating members including a first end portion and a second end portion distal from the first end portion;

the first lower reciprocating member operatively associated with the shaft in such a manner that the first end portion of the first lower reciprocating member orbits the shaft as the shaft rotates, and the second lower reciprocating member operatively associated with the shaft in such a manner that the first end portion of the second lower reciprocating member orbits the shaft as the shaft rotates;

a first foot pedal joined to the first lower reciprocating member proximate the second end portion of the first lower reciprocating member,

a second foot pedal joined to the second lower reciprocating member proximate the second end portion of the second lower reciprocating member; and

the first and second foot pedals each move in a respective closed loop path as the first end portions of the first and second lower reciprocating members orbit the shaft.

The stationary exercise machine of claim 1 , wherein the first upper reciprocating member is operatively coupled to the first disk via a first collar that encompasses the first disk, and the second upper reciprocating member is operatively coupled to the second disk via a second collar that encompasses the second disk.

3. The stationary exercise machine of claim 2 , wherein the first disk rotates within the first collar as the shaft rotates, and the second disk rotates within the second collar as the shaft rotates.

4. The stationary exercise machine of claim 2 , wherein the first collar is fixedly joined to the first upper reciprocating member, and the second collar is fixedly joined to the second upper reciprocating member.

The stationary exercise machine of claim 1 , wherein the first lower reciprocating member is operatively associated with the shaft via a first crank arm that is joined to the shaft and the first lower reciprocating member; and the second lower reciprocating member is operatively associated with the shaft via a second crank arm that is joined to the shaft and the second lower reciprocating member.

6. The stationary exercise machine of claim 5 , wherein a first virtual crank arm is defined by a line between the shaft and the center of the first disk, and an angle between the first crank arm and the first virtual crank arm is between approximately 60° and 90°.

7. The stationary exercise machine of claim 6 , wherein the angle between the first virtual crank arm and the first crank arm is approximately 75°.

8. The stationary exercise machine of claim 1 , further comprising first and second links pivotally connected to the first and second upper reciprocating members, respectively, and the first and second links are fixedly connected to the first and second handles, respectively.

9. The stationary exercise machine of claim 8 , wherein the first and second links are pivotally joined to the frame.

10. The stationary exercise machine of claim 8 , wherein the first and second handles and the first and second links all pivot about a common axis.

11. The stationary exercise machine of claim 10 , wherein the first handle and the second handle pivot in opposite directions about the common axis.

12. The stationary exercise machine of claim 10 , wherein the first handle and the first link pivot in the same direction about the common axis.

13. The stationary exercise machine of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first roller joined to the first lower reciprocating member, and a second roller joined to the second lower reciprocating member;

the frame includes a first incline member and a second incline member; and

the first roller travels along the first incline member as the first end portion of the first lower reciprocating member orbits the shaft, and the second roller travels along the second incline member as the first end portion of the second lower reciprocating member orbits the shaft.

14. The stationary exercise machine of claim 13 , wherein the first roller is located near the second end portion of the first lower reciprocating member, and the second roller is located near the second end portion of the second lower reciprocating member.

15. The stationary exercise machine of claim 1 , further comprising a resistance mechanism operatively associated with the shaft.

16. The stationary exercise machine of claim 15 , wherein the resistance mechanism includes an air-resistance based resistance mechanism.

17. The stationary exercise machine of claim 16 , wherein rotation of the air-resistance based resistance mechanism draws air into a lateral air inlet and expels the drawn in air through radial air outlets.

18. The stationary exercise machine of claim 15 , wherein the resistance mechanism includes a magnetic based resistance mechanism.

19. A stationary exercise machine comprising:

a frame;

a shaft supported by the frame;

a first upper reciprocating member operatively associated with the shaft via a first collar that encompasses a first disk eccentrically mounted on the shaft, and a first handle operatively associated with the first upper reciprocating member and the frame;

a second upper reciprocating member operatively associated with the shaft via a second collar that encompasses a second disk eccentrically mounted on the shaft, and a second handle operatively associated with the second upper reciprocating member and the frame;

a first foot pedal joined to a first lower reciprocating member, the first lower reciprocating member operatively associated with the shaft in such a manner that a portion of the first lower reciprocating member orbits the shaft as the shaft rotates;

a second foot pedal joined to a second lower reciprocating member, the second lower reciprocating member operatively associated with the shaft in such a manner that a portion of the second lower reciprocating member orbits the shaft as the shaft rotates;

the first upper reciprocating member is not directly connected to either the first lower reciprocating member or the second lower reciprocating member;

the second upper reciprocating member is not directly connected to either the first lower reciprocating member or the second lower reciprocating member; and

the first and second foot pedals each move in a respective closed loop path as the portions of the first and second lower reciprocating members orbit the shaft.
