Claims (28)

1 . A wireless system, comprising:

a wearable appliance monitoring one or more body parameters, the appliance including an accelerometer and one or more additional sensors to detect movement or vital sign, wherein the accelerometer detects patient movement and wherein another sensor detects body rotation or height from a floor; and

a telephone wirelessly coupled to the wearable appliance, wherein the telephone comprises either a cellular telephone or a landline telephone coupled to a plain old telephone service line.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein a position of the appliance is determined from one or more of: a home positioning system, a global positioning system (GPS), or a geo-location database with predetermined transmitter positions.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the appliance is coupled to a hospital monitoring equipment.

4 . The system of claim 1 , comprising one of: EKG detector, ECG detector, electromagnetic detector, ultrasonic detector, optical detector.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the appliance detects if a user has fallen down and calls for help if the user does not get up within a predetermined period.

6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the appliance comprises a pendant with two-way voice communication and wherein the telephone comprises an in-home communicator coupled to the wearable appliance and to a plain old telephone service line.

7 . The system of claim 1 , comprising a call center coupled to the appliance to provide a human response.

8 . The system of claim 1 , comprising a web server coupled to the telephone to provide information to an authorized remote user.

9 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the position of the appliance is determined from wireless access point locations or from cell tower triangulation.

10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the position is determined with wireless local area network (WLAN), cellular and GPS readings.

11 . The system of claim 1 , comprising code to store medicine taking habits, eating and drinking habits, sleeping habits, ambulatory information, or exercise habits.

12 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the appliance comprises a pendant, a belt clip, or a watch, and an activity tracker that counts steps taken and daily activity.

13 . A monitoring system, comprising:

a wireless telephone;

a wearable appliance in communication with the wireless telephone, the appliance monitoring activity with an accelerometer and one or more additional sensors to detect movement or vital sign.

14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the appliance comprises a pendant or a watch.

15 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the wireless telephone comprises a cellular telephone or a landline telephone coupled to a plain old telephone service line.

16 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the appliance transmits and receives voice from a person.

17 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the appliance is worn during a bath or a shower.

18 . A personal emergency response system, comprising:

a wireless transceiver;

a personal area network (PAN) transceiver;

an accelerometer, a gyroscope and a magnetometer, and

a processor coupled to the wireless transceiver and the PAN transceiver and receiving data from one or more of the accelerometer, gyroscope or magnetometer, the processor detecting a fall or a dangerous condition and calling for assistance through the transceiver.

19 . The system of claim 18 , comprising an external wearable appliance wirelessly coupled to the PAN transceiver and including an accelerometer, a gyroscope and a magnetometer to detect a fall or a dangerous condition.

20 . The system of claim 18 , wherein at least one of the processor and the appliance detects if a user has fallen down and calls for help if the user does not get up within a predetermined period.
