Abstract

Systems and methods for processing payment transactions using combination payment cards. The combination payment card is associated with an open-loop account and one or more closed-loop accounts. Transaction information is received from a point-of-sale device. At least one of the closed-loop and open-loop account is debited.

Claims (61)

1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

enabling a point-of-sale device to accept a combination payment card, wherein the combination payment card is associated with at least one of a closed-loop account and an open-loop account;

receiving, at an acquirer processor over an electronic network, transaction information for a transaction originating from the point-of-sale device, wherein the transaction information comprises an account number, a terminal identifier, and a merchant identifier and wherein the acquirer processor is located remotely from the point-of-sale device and adapted to process both open-loop transactions and closed-loop transactions;

determining, by the acquirer processor, whether the received account number is linked to both the open-loop account and the closed-loop account by cross-referencing at least a portion of the account number against a known list of combination payment card accounts stored in an account database of the acquirer processor, wherein the open-loop account is affiliated with a sponsoring network and the closed-loop account is affiliated with a closed-loop merchant;

if the account number is linked to both the open-loop account and the closed-loop account:

determining, by the acquirer processor, whether the point-of-sale device is affiliated with the closed-loop merchant based on the terminal identifier and the merchant identifier;

if the point-of-sale device is affiliated with the closed-loop merchant, enabling, via a prompt at the point-of-sale device, a combination payment card holder to select whether a purchase should be charged to the open-loop account or the closed-loop account;

if the closed-loop account is selected by the combination payment card holder, determining, by the acquirer processor, whether the closed-loop account has sufficient funds to complete the transaction;

transmitting, by the acquirer processor, a full authorization of sale to the point-of-sale device over the electronic network based on determining the closed-loop account has sufficient funds, or

transmitting, by the acquirer processor, a partial authorization of sale to the point-of-sale device over the electronic network based on determining the closed-loop account does not have sufficient funds, and using the acquirer processor to communicate with the sponsoring network over the electronic network to determine whether the open-loop account has sufficient funds to cover an amount of deficiency; and

transmitting, by the acquirer processor, a full authorization of sale to the point-of-sale device over the electronic network based on determining the open-loop account has sufficient funds to cover the amount of deficiency, or

requesting, via a prompt at the point-of-sale device, the combination payment card holder to provide an additional type of funds based on determining the open-loop account does not have sufficient funds to cover the amount of deficiency; and

if the point-of-sale device is not affiliated with the closed-loop merchant, using the acquirer processor to communicate with the sponsoring network over the electronic network to determine whether the open-loop account has sufficient funds to complete the transaction; and

if the account number is not linked to both the open-loop account and the closed-loop account:

determining, by the acquirer processor, whether the account number is linked to the open-loop account; and

using the acquirer processor to communicate with the sponsoring network over the electronic network to determine whether the open-loop account has sufficient funds to complete the transaction based on determining the account number is linked to the open-loop account, or

transmitting, by the acquirer processor, a notification message to the point-of-sale device over the electronic network based on determining the account number is not linked to the open-loop account.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein if the account number is linked to both the open-loop account and the closed-loop account, an account associated with the account number is a combination payment card account.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising determining, by the acquirer processor, whether the account number is linked to a plurality of closed-loop accounts.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 3 , wherein each closed-loop account of the plurality of closed-loop accounts is associated with a respective closed-loop merchant.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the account number is within a range of bank identification numbers (BINs) identifiable as combination payment card account numbers.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the account number is within a range of issuer identification numbers (IINs) identifiable as combination payment card account numbers.

7. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon which when executed by an acquirer processor adapted to process both open-loop transactions and closed-loop transactions, cause the acquirer processor to:

receive, over an electronic network, transaction information for a transaction originating from a point-of-sale device accepting a combination payment card, wherein the combination payment card is associated with at least one of a closed-loop account and an open loop account, wherein the transaction information comprises an account number, a terminal identifier, and a merchant identifier, and wherein the point-of-sale device is located remotely from the acquirer processor;

determine whether the received account number is linked to both the open-loop account and the closed-loop account by cross-referencing at least a portion of the account number against a known list of combination payment card accounts stored in an account database of the acquirer processor, wherein the open-loop account is affiliated with a sponsoring network and the closed-loop account is affiliated with a closed-loop merchant;

if the account number is linked to both the open-loop account and the closed-loop account:

determine whether the point-of-sale device is affiliated with the closed-loop merchant based on the terminal identifier and the merchant identifier;

if the point-of-sale device is affiliated with the closed-loop merchant, enabling, via a prompt at the point-of-sale device, a combination payment card holder to select whether a purchase should be charged to the open-loop account or the closed-loop account;

if the closed-loop account is selected by the combination payment card holder, determine whether the closed-loop account has sufficient funds to complete the transaction;

transmit a full authorization of sale to the point-of-sale device over the electronic network based on determining the closed-loop account has sufficient funds, or

transmit a partial authorization of sale to the point-of-sale device over the electronic network based on determining the closed-loop account does not have sufficient funds, and communicate with the sponsoring network over the electronic network to determine whether the open-loop account has sufficient funds to cover an amount of deficiency; and

transmit a full authorization of sale to the point-of sale device over the electronic network based on determining the open-loop account has sufficient funds to cover the amount of deficiency, or

request, via a prompt at the point-of-sale device, the combination payment card holder to provide an additional type of funds based on determining the open-loop account does not have sufficient funds to cover the amount of deficiency; and

if the point-of-sale device is not affiliated with the closed-loop merchant, communicate with the sponsoring network over the electronic network to determine whether the open-loop account has sufficient funds to complete the transaction; and

if the account number is not linked to both the open-loop account and the closed loop account:

determine whether the account number is linked to the open-loop account; and

communicate with the sponsoring network over the electronic network to determine whether the open-loop account has sufficient funds to complete the transaction based on determining the account number is linked to the open loop account, or

transmit a notification message to the point-of-sale device over the electronic network based on determining the account number is not linked to the open loop account.

8. The computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein if the account number is linked to both the open-loop account and the closed-loop account, an account associated with the account number is a combination payment card account.

9. The computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the instructions further cause the acquirer processor to determine whether the account number is linked to a plurality of closed-loop accounts.

10. The computer-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein each closed-loop account of the plurality of closed-loop accounts is associated with a respective closed-loop merchant.

11. The computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the account number is within a range of bank identification numbers (BINs) identifiable as combination payment card account numbers.
