Abstract

Tools and techniques related to the provision of location based services via a mobile communications device. A system might comprise a mobile communications device, a mobile communications base station, and a server computer system. The location of the device may be correlated with certain user preferences stored on the server computer system. Some techniques provide for activities to be undertaken based on the location of a device are described, including without limitation efficiently determining the location of a mobile device and mapping the location of the device, along with other features of interest, such as the locations of other devices.

Claims (37)

1. A mobile communication device configured to:

receive input from a user, the input identifying a plurality of other mobile communication devices to be tracked;

modify a user profile including preferences of the user specifying circumstances in which a location of each of the plurality of other mobile communications devices will be displayed on a map on the mobile communication device;

receive a first set of data identifying a location of the mobile communication device;

receive a second set of data comprising locations of each of the plurality of other mobile communication devices; and

display, on a screen of the mobile communication device, image data illustrating a map and the locations of each of the plurality of other mobile communication devices, wherein the image data includes a graphical representation of historical locations of the mobile telecommunication device within a time period, and wherein the time period is specified in the user profile.

2. The mobile communication device of claim 1 , wherein the device is a wireless telephone.

3. The mobile communication device of claim 1 , wherein the first set of data comprises GPS coordinate data.

4. The mobile communication device of claim 1 , wherein the second set of data comprises image data is formatted for display on the device and includes a graphical representation of a selection of locations of the plurality of other mobile communications devices, the selection being based preferences in the user profile.

5. The mobile communication device of claim 4 , wherein the mobile communication device is further configured to receive the image data from a server.

6. The mobile communication device of claim 5 , wherein,

the mobile communications device is further configured to transmit at least a portion of the user profile to the server.

7. The mobile communication device of claim 1 , wherein,

the user profile further includes preferences of the user specifying the circumstances in which a location of each of a plurality of businesses and other points of interest will be displayed in the image data; and

the image data includes a graphical representation of a selection of the locations of the plurality of businesses and other points of interest, wherein the selection is based on preferences in the user profile.

8. The mobile communication device of claim 7 , wherein each of the selections are graphically represented as different icons in the image data, and the icons comprise hyperlinks to information about each of the selections.

9. A method, comprising:

receiving, at a mobile communication device, input from a user, the input identifying a plurality of other mobile communication devices to be tracked;

modifying, with the mobile communication device, a user profile including preferences of the user specifying circumstances in which a location of each of the plurality of other mobile communications devices will be displayed on a map on the mobile communication device;

receiving, with the mobile communication device, a first set of data identifying a location of the mobile communication device;

receiving, with the mobile communication device, a second set of data comprising locations of each of the plurality of other mobile communication devices; and

displaying, on a screen of the mobile communication device, image data illustrating a map and the locations of each of the plurality of other mobile communication devices, wherein the image data includes a graphical representation of historical locations of the mobile telecommunication device within a time period, and wherein the time period is specified in the user profile.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the device is a wireless telephone.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first set of data comprises GPS coordinate data.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the second set of data comprises image data is formatted for display on the device and includes a graphical representation of a selection of locations of the plurality of other mobile communications devices, the selection being based preferences in the user profile.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising receiving the image data from a server.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising transmitting, with the mobile communication device, at least a portion of the user profile to the server.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein,

the user profile further includes preferences of the user specifying the circumstances in which a location of each of a plurality of businesses and other points of interest will be displayed in the image data; and

the image data includes a graphical representation of a selection of the locations of the plurality of businesses and other points of interest, wherein the selection is based on preferences in the user profile.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein each of the selections are graphically represented as different icons in the image data, and the icons comprise hyperlinks to information about each of the selections.

17. A computer program embodied on at least one non-transitory computer readable medium, the computer program comprising instructions executable by a mobile communication device to:

receive input from a user, the input identifying a plurality of other mobile communication devices to be tracked;

modify a user profile including preferences of the user specifying circumstances in which a location of each of the plurality of other mobile communications devices will be displayed on a map on the mobile communication device;

receive a first set of data identifying a location of the mobile communication device;

receive a second set of data comprising locations of each of the plurality of other mobile communication devices; and

display, on a screen of the mobile communication device, image data illustrating a map and the locations of each of the plurality of other mobile communication devices, wherein the image data includes a graphical representation of historical locations of the mobile telecommunication device within a time period, and wherein the time period is specified in the user profile.
