Abstract

A method of supporting group communication over LTE MBMS is provided. A UE first establishes a unicast Evolved Packet Service (EPS) bearer in an LTE network for group communication. The UE belongs to a communication group having a communication group ID. The UE receives access information from the network for monitoring downlink (DL) multicast traffic of the DL group communication based on a multicast decision. The UE is then ready for monitoring a multicast Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) bearer for receiving the DL multicast traffic. The multicast MBMS bearer is associated with a Temporary Mobile Group Identifier (TMGI), and wherein the TMGI is associated with the communication group ID. The UE later enters RRC_IDLE mode and releases a radio bearer of the unicast EPS bearer while keep monitoring the multicast MBMS bearer for the DL multicast traffic.

Claims (25)

1. A method comprising:

establishing a unicast Evolved Packet Service (EPS) bearer by a user equipment (UE) in a Long-Term Evolution (LTE) network for receiving downlink (DL) unicast traffic of DL group communication, wherein the UE belongs to a communication group having a group identifier (ID);

receiving access information from the LTE network for monitoring DL multicast traffic of the DL group communication, wherein the UE receives the DL group communication via monitoring a Physical Downlink Control Channel (PDCCH);

monitoring a multicast Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) bearer for receiving the DL multicast traffic in MBMS broadcast mode, wherein the MBMS bearer is associated with a Temporary Mobile Group Identifier (TMGI), wherein the TMGI is associated with the group ID, and wherein physical resources used for the DL group communication is indicated by the PDCCH addressed to a group radio network temporary identifier (RNTI) that is linked to the TMGI; and

entering radio resource control_idle (RRC_IDLE) mode and releasing a radio bearer of the unicast EPS bearer while keep monitoring the multicast MBMS bearer for the DL multicast traffic.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the UE receives the DL group communication in MBMS Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) subframes broadcasted in a camped cell.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the UE performs cell reselection in RRC_IDLE mode based on system information broadcasted in the camped cell, wherein the broadcasted system information comprises MBMS service availability information of neighboring cells.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the UE enters radio resource control_connected (RRC_Connected) mode and requests to recover the radio bearer of the unicast bearer for group communication when the UE detects moving out of MBMS signal coverage.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the UE performs tracking area update (TAU) to inform the LTE network when the UE is leaving a camped cell.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the UE is notified with the group RNTI when the UE is in resource control_connected (RRC_Connected) mode.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein a monitoring cycle of the PDCCH is aligned with a paging cycle.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the UE extends monitoring of the group RNTI for a fixed amount of time once the UE receives the DL group communication in RRC_IDLE mode.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

requesting radio resource control (RRC) establishment with a new cause for group communication after losing the DL multicast traffic reception due to an MBMS coverage hole.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the MBMS coverage hole is detected by recognizing reduced MBMS signal strength without triggering handover-related measurement events.

11. A User Equipment (UE), comprising:

a configuration circuit that establishes a unicast Evolved Packet Service (EPS) bearer in a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network for receiving downlink (DL) unicast traffic of DL group communication, wherein the UE belongs to a communication group having a group identifier (ID);

a radio frequency (RF) receiver that receives access information from the LTE network for monitoring DL multicast traffic of the DL group communication, wherein the UE receives the DL group communication via monitoring a Physical Downlink Control Channel (PDCCH); and

a group communication monitoring circuit that monitors a multicast Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) bearer for receiving the DL multicast traffic in MBMS broadcast mode, wherein the MBMS bearer is associated with a Temporary Mobile Group Identifier (TMGI), wherein the TMGI is associated with the group ID, wherein physical resources used for the DL group communication is indicated by the PDCCH addressed to a group radio network temporary identifier (RNTI) that is linked to the TMGI, and wherein the UE enters radio resource control_idle (RRC_IDLE) mode while keep monitoring the MBMS bearer for the DL multicast traffic.

12. The UE of claim 11 , wherein the UE receives the DL group communication in MBMS Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) subframes broadcasted in a camped cell.

13. The UE of claim 12 , wherein the UE performs cell reselection in RRC_IDLE mode based on system information broadcasted in the camped cell, wherein the broadcasted system information comprises MBMS service availability information of neighboring cells.

14. The UE of claim 11 , wherein the UE enters radio resource control_connected (RRC_Connected) mode and requests to recover the radio bearer of the unicast bearer for group communication when the UE detects moving out of MBMS signal coverage.

15. The UE of claim 11 , wherein a monitoring cycle of the PDCCH is aligned with a paging cycle.

16. The UE of claim 11 , wherein the UE requests radio resource control (RRC) establishment with a new cause for group communication after losing the DL multicast traffic reception due to an MBMS coverage hole.

17. The UE of claim 16 , wherein the MBMS coverage hole is detected by recognizing reduced MBMS signal strength without triggering handover-related measurement events.
