Wagering game with multiple reels forming multiple symbol arrays

The symbols indicate a randomly selected outcome of the wagering game. The plurality of reels includes at least one single-symbol reel and at least one multi-symbol reel. The at least one display is adapted to display at least one payline overlapping at least one symbol from the at least one single-symbol reel and at least one symbol from the at least one multi-symbol reel.
1. A gaming system comprising:
an input device;
a display device;
at least one processor; and
at least one memory device storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the gaming system to
receive, via the input device, an input indicative of a wager,
randomly select a game outcome,
spin and stop a plurality of reels to display symbols on the display device in accordance with the selected game outcome, the plurality of reels including two types of reels, the two types of reels including single-symbol reels each displaying a single symbol in a single symbol position and multi-symbol reels each displaying a plurality of symbols in respective symbol positions, the symbol position of at least one of the single-symbol reels being adjacent to and horizontally aligned with one of the symbol positions of at least one of the multi-symbol reels, the plurality of reels including a first plurality of reels and a second plurality of reels, the first plurality of reels including one of the types of reels and the second plurality of reels including the other of the types of reels, and
provide an award based on the displayed symbols.
2. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein in response to a predetermined number of matching symbols being achieved on the first plurality of reels, the second plurality of reels are spun while maintaining the first plurality of reels stationary.
3. The gaming system of claim 2 , wherein the first plurality of reels include the single-symbol reels.
4. The gaming system of claim 2 , wherein the first plurality of reels include the multi-symbol reels.
5. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein one of the first plurality of reels and the second plurality of reels forms a 2×2 array including four symbol positions.
6. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions further cause the gaming system to trigger a bonus event in response to a predetermined number of matching symbols being achieved on the first plurality of reels.
7. The gaming system of claim 6 , wherein the first plurality of reels include the single-symbol reels.
8. The gaming system of claim 6 , wherein the first plurality of reels include the multi-symbol reels.
9. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of reels are arranged in rows and columns with adjacent ones of the symbols positions being horizontally or vertically aligned with each other.
10. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the symbol positions of at least two of the single-symbols reels are adjacent and horizontally aligned with each other.
11. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the single-symbol reels is positioned to the left of at least one of the multi-symbol reels.
12. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the award is based on a predetermined number of matching symbols being achieved, at least one of the matching symbols being displayed on at least one of the single-symbol reels, and at least another of the matching symbols being displayed on at least one of the multi-symbol reels.
13. A computer-implemented method in a gaming system, comprising:
receiving, via the input device, an input indicative of a wager;
randomly selecting a game outcome;
spinning and stopping a plurality of reels to display symbols on the display device in accordance with the selected game outcome, the plurality of reels including two types of reels, the two types of reels including single-symbol reels each displaying a single symbol in a single symbol position and multi-symbol reels each displaying a plurality of symbols in respective symbol positions, the symbol position of at least one of the single-symbol reels being adjacent to and horizontally aligned with one of the symbol positions of at least one of the multi-symbol reels, the plurality of reels including a first plurality of reels and a second plurality of reels, the first plurality of reels including one of the types of reels and the second plurality of reels including the other of the types of reels; and
providing an award based on the displayed symbols.
14. The method of claim 13 , wherein in response to a predetermined number of matching symbols being achieved on the first plurality of reels, spinning the second plurality of reels while maintaining the first plurality of reels stationary.
15. The method of claim 13 , wherein one of the first plurality of reels and the second plurality of reels forms a 2×2 array including four symbol positions.
16. The method of claim 13 , further comprising triggering a bonus event in response to a predetermined number of matching symbols being achieved on the first plurality of reels.
17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of reels are arranged in rows and columns with adjacent ones of the symbols positions being horizontally or vertically aligned with each other.
18. The method of claim 13 , wherein the symbol positions of at least two of the single-symbols reels are adjacent and horizontally aligned with each other.
19. The method of claim 13 , wherein at least one of the single-symbol reels is positioned to the left of at least one of the multi-symbol reels.
20. The method of claim 13 , wherein the award is based on a predetermined number of matching symbols being achieved, at least one of the matching symbols being displayed on at least one of the single-symbol reels, and at least another of the matching symbols being displayed on at least one of the multi-symbol reels.
21. One or more computer-readable storage media including instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:
receiving, via the input device, an input indicative of a wager;
randomly selecting a game outcome;
spinning and stopping a plurality of reels to display symbols on the display device in accordance with the selected game outcome, the plurality of reels including two types of reels, the two types of reels including single-symbol reels each displaying a single symbol in a single symbol position and multi-symbol reels each displaying a plurality of symbols in respective symbol positions, the symbol positions of at least two of the single-symbols reels being adjacent and horizontally aligned with each other, the plurality of reels including a first plurality of reels and a second plurality of reels, the first plurality of reels including one of the types of reels and the second plurality of reels including the other of the types of reels; and
providing an award based on the displayed symbols.
22. The one or more computer-readable storage media of claim 21 , wherein in response to a predetermined number of matching symbols being achieved on the first plurality of reels, the second plurality of reels are spun while maintaining the first plurality of reels stationary.
23. The one or more computer-readable storage media of claim 21 , wherein one of the first plurality of reels and the second plurality of reels forms a 2×2 array including four symbol positions.
24. The one or more computer-readable storage media of claim 21 , wherein the instructions further cause the gaming system to trigger a bonus event in response to a predetermined number of matching symbols being achieved on the first plurality of reels.
25. The one or more computer-readable storage media of claim 24 , wherein the first plurality of reels include the single-symbol reels and the predetermined number of matching symbols is the same as the number of single-symbol reels included in the first plurality of reels.
26. The one or more computer-readable storage media of claim 21 , wherein the plurality of reels are arranged in rows and columns with adjacent ones of the symbols positions being horizontally or vertically aligned with each other.
27. The one or more computer-readable storage media of claim 21 , wherein the symbol position of at least one of the single-symbol reels being adjacent to and horizontally aligned with one of the symbol positions of at least one of the multi-symbol reels.
28. The one or more computer-readable storage media of claim 21 , wherein at least one of the single-symbol reels is positioned to the left of at least one of the multi-symbol reels.
29. The one or more computer-readable storage media of claim 21 , wherein the award is based on a predetermined number of matching symbols being achieved, at least one of the matching symbols being displayed on at least one of the single-symbol reels, and at least another of the matching symbols being displayed on at least one of the multi-symbol reels.
