Abstract

An IOL injection device comprises a tubular housing with a plunger longitudinally disposed within the tubular housing. The device is configured so that when the plunger is translated towards the front of the device, its tip engages an intraocular lens insertion cartridge mounted at or near the front end of the housing. The IOL injection device further comprises a control circuit. The control circuit is configured to perform the steps of advancing the plunger to a critical point at which an axial compressive force on the lens suddenly increases, retracting the plunger from the critical point to a sufficient distance for material of the intraocular lens to relax, pausing to allow the material of the intraocular lens to relax, advancing the plunger to the critical point a second time, and continuing to advance the plunger beyond the critical point to implant the intraocular lens.

Claims (33)

1. A device for implanting an intraocular lens in the lens capsule of an eye, the device comprising:

a tubular housing having a primary axis extending between front and rear ends of the housing;

a plunger longitudinally disposed within the housing and having first and second ends, the first end being disposed towards the front end of the housing;

an electric drive system disposed within the housing, the electric drive system including an electric motor and configured to cause longitudinal translation of the plunger along the primary axis of the housing;

a cartridge mount at or near the front end of the housing and configured to accommodate a removable insertion cartridge in alignment with the plunger so that an intraocular lens disposed in the insertion cartridge is displaced from the insertion cartridge as the plunger is translated towards the front end of the housing; and

a control circuit, electrically connected to the electric motor and configured to perform the steps of:

advancing the plunger to a critical point at which an axial compressive force on the lens suddenly increases;

retracting the plunger from the critical point to a sufficient distance for material of the intraocular lens to relax;

pausing after the plunger is retracted to allow the material of the intraocular lens to relax;

advancing the plunger to the critical point a second time; continuing to advance the plunger beyond the critical point to implant the intraocular lens; and

wherein the step of continuing to advance the plunger further comprises: advancing the plunger to fully compress the intraocular lens; pausing after the intraocular lens is fully compressed to allow the material of the intraocular lens to relax; and further advancing the plunger to implant the lens.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the critical point is identified based on a predetermined position for the plunger.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is further configured to detect the plunger reaching the critical point based on a detected force on the plunger.

4. The device of claim 3 , wherein the detected force is detected based on a back EMF signal from the electric motor.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the step of pausing comprises pausing at least five seconds.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein, during the steps of advancing the plunger to the critical point and advancing the plunger to the critical point the second time, the plunger is advancing at a rate of 1.2 mm/s or less as it reaches the critical point.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein, during the step of continuing to advance the plunger, a rate of advancement for the plunger is accelerated.

8. A method of implanting an intraocular lens, comprising:

providing the device as recited in claim 1 ;

advancing the plunger to the critical point at which the axial compressive force on the lens suddenly increases;

retracting the plunger from the critical point to the sufficient distance for material of the intraocular lens to relax;

pausing to allow the material of the intraocular lens to relax;

advancing the plunger to the critical point a second time; and continuing to advance the plunger to implant the intraocular lens.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the step of continuing to advance the plunger further comprises:

advancing the plunger to fully compress the intraocular lens;

pausing after the intraocular lens is fully compressed to allow the material of the intraocular lens to relax; and

advancing the plunger to implant the lens.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the critical point is identified based on a predetermined position for the plunger.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the control circuit is further configured to detect the plunger reaching the critical point based on a detected force on the plunger.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the detected force is detected based on a back EMF signal from the electric motor.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the step of pausing comprises pausing at least five seconds.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein, during the steps of advancing the plunger to the critical point and advancing the plunger to the critical point the second time, the plunger is advancing at a rate of 1.2 mm/s or less as it reaches the critical point.

15. The method of claim 8 , wherein, during the step of continuing to advance the plunger, a rate of advancement for the plunger is accelerated.
