Abstract

Methods, devices, and systems induce neuromodulation by focusing a source of stimulation through a skull/brain interface in the form of an aperture formed in the skull, a naturally occurring fenestration in the skull, or a transcranial channel. Methods, devices, and systems identify where to locate skull/brain interfaces, accessories that can be used with the interfaces, and features for controlling stimulation delivered through the interfaces. Multiple indications for the skull/brain interfaces include diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders and conditions such as epilepsy, movement disorders, depression, Alzheimer's disease, autism, coma, and pain.

Claims (18)

1. A transcranial interface configured to be implanted in an aperture in a skull of a patient, comprising:

a channel having a proximal end, a distal end, an outer wall defining an interior cavity, and a proximal end structure comprising at least one extension extending in the interior cavity toward the distal end of the channel, wherein the proximal end structure is coupled to the outer wall in a manner that provides for displacement of the proximal end structure relative to the outer wall; and

a valve mechanism configured to be at least partially displaced by the proximal end structure in a direction between the proximal end and the distal end of the channel to thereby selectively move between an opened arrangement to thereby open the channel and a closed arrangement to thereby close the channel,

wherein the valve mechanism is positioned entirely within the interior cavity, between the proximal end and the distal end, when in the opened arrangement and when in the closed arrangement.

2. The transcranial interface of claim 1 , wherein the valve mechanism comprises a plurality of flaps extending from an inside surface of the outer wall, wherein displacement of the proximal end structure causes the at least one extension to displace at least one of the plurality of flaps in a direction between the proximal end and the distal end to thereby open the channel.

3. The transcranial interface of claim 2 , wherein displacement of the proximal end structure is provided by a mechanical force.

4. The transcranial interface of claim 1 , wherein displacement of the proximal end structure is provided by a magnetic force.

5. The transcranial interface of claim 1 , wherein the proximal end structure comprises at least one lumen.

6. The transcranial interface of claim 1 , wherein the proximal end structure comprises a plurality of lumens.

7. The transcranial interface of claim 1 , wherein the valve mechanism is at least partially formed from a substance that resists ionic current flow.

8. A transcranial interface configured to be implanted in an aperture in a skull of a patient, comprising:

a channel having a proximal end, a distal end, and an outer wall defining an interior cavity; and

a valve mechanism configured to be at least partially displaced in a direction between the proximal end and the distal end of the channel to thereby selectively open and close the channel,

wherein the valve mechanism comprises a current detector and a plurality of flaps extending from an inside surface of the outer wall, and the valve mechanism is configured to be activated based on an amount of current detected by the current detector, to thereby displace at least one of the plurality of flaps in a direction between the proximal end and the distal end to thereby open the channel.

9. A transcranial interface configured to be implanted in an aperture in a skull of a patient, comprising:

a channel having a proximal end, a distal end, and an outer wall defining an interior cavity; and

a valve mechanism configured to be at least partially displaced in a direction between the proximal end and the distal end of the channel to thereby selectively open and close the channel,

wherein the valve mechanism comprises a voltage detector and a plurality of flaps extending from an inside surface of the outer wall, and the valve mechanism is configured to be activated based on an amount of voltage detected by the voltage detector, to thereby displace at least one of the plurality of flaps in a direction between the proximal end and the distal end to thereby open the channel.
