Abstract

A multi-layered wiper for removing a product (e.g., a cosmetic product) from an applicator. The multi-layered wiper comprises a wiping body having a wiping face, an acute wiping tip, and vertical slits, formed of a first material, over-molded to a retention body, formed of another material harder than the first material. By virtue of having a multi-layered wiper comprising a wiping body, formed of a first material, over-molded to a retention body, formed of another material, harder than the first material, the multi-layered wiper is capable of providing exceptional installation characteristics, while simultaneously providing exceptional wiping characteristics.

Claims (35)

1. A method comprising:

heating a first material to about a first temperature;

heating a second material to about a second temperature;

injection molding, subsequent to the heating of the first material, a cylindrical-shaped retention portion formed of the first material;

cooling the cylindrical-shaped retention portion formed of the first material;

injection molding onto the cylindrical-shaped retention portion formed of the first material, subsequent to the cooling of the cylindrical-shaped retention portion formed of the first material, a dome-shaped wiping portion formed of the second material, the dome-shaped wiping portion formed of the second material comprising a wiping face arranged on an inside portion of the bottom of the dome-shaped wiping portion for removing a product from a surface of an applicator, wherein the wiping face comprises one single continuous curvilinear shaped portion of the dome-shaped wiping portion; and

cutting vertical slits through at least a portion of the wiping face.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cutting of the vertical slits through at least the portion of the wiping surface comprises pressing the wiper onto a die to cut the slits.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the wiping face arranged on the inside portion of the bottom of the dome-shaped wiping portion comprises a vertical wiping surface, and the cutting vertical slits through at least a portion of the wiping face comprises cutting vertical slits through at least a portion of the vertical wiping surface.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the cutting of the vertical slits through at least the portion of the vertical wiping surface comprises pressing the wiper onto a die to cut the slits.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the wiping face arranged on the inside portion of the bottom of the dome-shaped wiping portion comprises a raised ridge protruding towards a center of the dome-shaped wiping portion, and the method further comprises cutting vertical slits through at least a portion of the raised ridge.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the cutting of the vertical slits through at least the portion of the raised ridge comprises pressing the wiper onto a die to cut the slits.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first material comprises polypropylene (PP) or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS).

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second material comprises thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), rubber, polyethylene, or silicone.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the injection molding onto the cylindrical-shaped retention portion comprises over-molding.

10. A method comprising:

molding a wiper having a wiping body, the wiping body comprising an acute wiping tip arranged around a circumference of an opening of the wiping body;

removing a portion of a product from an end of an applicator via passing the applicator through the wiper;

measuring an amount of the product remaining on the end of the applicator after passing the applicator through the wiper;

determining a stiffness of the wiper;

determining a depth of slits to cut in the wiper based at least in part on the determined stiffness and the amount of the product remaining on the end of the applicator after passing the applicator through the wiper; and

cutting slits in the wiping body having the determined depth.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the acute wiping tip arranged around the circumference of the opening of the wiping body defines a termination interface between a vertical wiping face arranged on a bottom inside portion of the wiping body and a bottom outside portion of the wiping body, and the method further comprises cutting vertical slits through at least a portion of the vertical wiping surface based at least in part on the determined stiffness.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein each of the vertical slits cut in the vertical wiping surface comprises an asymmetrical slit comprising a first edge cut in the vertical wiping surface and another edge shorter than the first edge cut in the bottom outside portion of the wiping body, and the method further comprises cutting the asymmetrical slit based at least in part on the determined stiffness.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the cutting of the slits in the wiping body comprises pressing the wiper onto a die to cut the slits.

14. A method comprising:

determining a stiffness of a wiper based at least in part on a wiping test;

determining a depth of slits to cut in the wiper based at least in part on the determined stiffness; and

cutting slits in the wiping body having the determined depth.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the cutting of the slits in the wiping body comprises pressing the wiper onto a die to cut the slits.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the determined depth of the slits to cut comprises at least about 1.5 millimeters in length.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the wiper comprises a dome-shaped wiping portion including a wiping face arranged on an inside portion of a bottom of the dome-shaped wiping portion for removing a product from a surface of an applicator, the wiping face comprising one single continuous curvilinear shaped portion of the dome-shaped wiping portion, and the method further comprises cutting slits through at least a portion of the vertical wiping surface based at least in part on the determined stiffness.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein each of the slits arranged in the vertical wiping surface comprises an asymmetrical slit including a first edge cut in the vertical wiping surface and another edge shorter than the first edge cut in an outer surface of the dome-shaped wiping portion.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the cutting of the asymmetrical slits in the wiping surface comprises pressing the wiper onto a die to cut the asymmetrical slits.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein the determined depth of the first edge of the asymmetrical slits to cut comprises at least about 1.5 millimeters in length.
