Abstract

A laterally deflectable asymmetric implant for implanting into a body may comprise a deflectable piece having distal and proximal ends and assuming a straightened insertion state. The backbone may abut or interconnect with said deflectable piece at the distal end of the deflectable piece. In a fully deflected state the implant may define an asymmetric shape, e.g. a D-shaped loop, defining an at least partially enclosed volume. The deflectable piece may comprise a sequence of segments interconnected at effective hinges. Longitudinal pressure applied to the proximal end of the deflectable piece (or applied to the backbone in an opposite direction) may cause relative longitudinal movement between the backbone and the proximal end of the deflectable piece and may generate outward horizontal movement of the deflectable piece away from the backbone. In one embodiment, the implant is implanted using lateral access into an anterior zone of a vertebra and deployed posteriorly.

Claims (51)

1. A device for delivering filling material into a body comprising:

(a) a cartridge having an inner volume for receiving a quantity of filling material and a distal opening;

(b) a guide body defining an inner channel, said guide body and said cartridge being configured for deployment in mutually-abutting fixed spatial relation so that said inner channel of said guide body and said inner volume of said cartridge together define a continuous channel, said continuous channel extending beyond said guide body, said cartridge being removable from said guide body; and

(c) a plunger extending through said inner channel of said guide body and selectively displaceable in a direction of motion so as to advance through said inner volume of said cartridge so as to expel said quantity of filling material from said distal opening, wherein said plunger terminates in a distal tip, and wherein, in a fully inserted state of said plunger, said distal tip projects distally beyond said distal opening of said cartridge,

wherein said cartridge has a length in a direction parallel to the direction of motion, and wherein a length of said guide body in a direction parallel to the direction of motion is greater than said length of said cartridge.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein said cartridge is implemented as a tube.

3. A combination comprising:

(a) the device of claim 1 ; and

(b) an implant at least partially defining an at least partial enclosure,

wherein said implant is formed with an opening for introduction of the filling material into the at least partial enclosure.

4. The combination of claim 3 , wherein a distal end of said cartridge is sized to fit said opening.

5. The combination of claim 3 , wherein said implant is configured for deployment between two vertebral bodies.

6. The combination of claim 5 , further comprising a quantity of material effective to promote bone growth for introducing into said cartridge.

7. The combination of claim 3 , further comprising an elongated holder configured for engaging said implant during deployment of said implant, wherein said elongated holder defines an inner channel, and wherein said device for delivering material is sized for insertion via said inner channel.

8. A method for delivering filling material into a body, the method comprising:

(a) providing the device of claim 1 ;

(b) filling said cartridge with a quantity of biocompatible filler material;

(c) connecting said cartridge to a distal end of said guide body;

(d) introducing a distal end of the device into the body; and

(e) advancing said plunger so as to expel said quantity of biocompatible filler material from said cartridge.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein said filling is performed prior to said connecting.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein said introducing is performed so as to position the device to deliver the biocompatible filler material into an at least partial enclosure defined at least in part by an implant.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the implant is deployed in an intervertebral space between two vertebral bodies.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the biocompatible filler material is a material effective to promote fusion between the two vertebral bodies.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the implant is deployed within a vertebral body.

14. The method of claim 8 , further comprising, after said advancing:

(a) removing the device from the body and withdrawing said plunger;

(b) refilling said cartridge; and

(c) repeating said steps of introducing and advancing.

15. A method for delivering filling material into a body, the method comprising:

(a) providing a device comprising:

(i) a cartridge having an inner volume for receiving a quantity of filling material and a distal opening;

(ii) a guide body defining an inner channel, said guide body and said cartridge being configured for deployment in mutually-abutting fixed spatial relation so that said inner channel of said guide body and said inner volume of said cartridge together define a continuous channel, said continuous channel extending beyond said guide body, said cartridge being removable from said guide body; and

(iii) a plunger extending through said inner channel of said guide body and selectively displaceable in a direction of motion so as to advance through said inner volume of said cartridge so as to expel the quantity of filling material from said distal opening, said plunger terminating in a distal tip, wherein said cartridge has a length in a direction parallel to the direction of motion, and wherein a length of said guide body in a direction parallel to the direction of motion is greater than said length of said cartridge;

(b) filling said cartridge with a quantity of biocompatible filler material;

(c) introducing a distal end of the device into the body; and

(d) advancing said plunger to a fully inserted state in which said distal tip projects distally beyond said distal opening of said cartridge so as to expel said quantity of biocompatible filler material from said cartridge.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein said cartridge is removably connectable to said guide body, and wherein said filling is performed prior to connecting said cartridge to said guide body.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein said introducing is performed so as to position the device to deliver the biocompatible filler material into an at least partial enclosure defined at least in part by an implant.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the implant is deployed in an intervertebral space between two vertebral bodies.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the biocompatible filler material is a material effective to promote fusion between the two vertebral bodies.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein the implant is deployed within a vertebral body.

21. The method of claim 15 , further comprising, after said advancing:

(a) removing the device from the body and withdrawing said plunger;

(b) refilling said cartridge; and

(c) repeating said steps of introducing and advancing.

22. A device for delivering filling material into a body comprising:

(a) a cartridge having an inner volume for receiving a quantity of filling material and a distal opening;

(b) a guide body defining an inner channel, said guide body and said cartridge being configured for deployment in mutually-abutting fixed spatial relation so that said inner channel of said guide body and said inner volume of said cartridge define sequential portions of a continuous channel, said continuous channel extending beyond said guide body, said cartridge being removable from said guide body; and

(c) a plunger extending through said inner channel of said guide body and selectively displaceable in a direction of motion so as to advance through said inner volume of said cartridge so as to expel said quantity of filling material from said distal opening,

wherein said cartridge has a length in a direction parallel to the direction of motion, and wherein a length of said guide body in a direction parallel to the direction of motion is greater than said length of said cartridge.
