Abstract

A dental mouthpiece is provided that may be attached to a high-suction dental adapter for the purpose of assisting the dental staff during dental procedures through chair-side, hands-free suction, and isolation. Such a mouthpiece may include a main body portion, a cheek retractor portion, and a suction connector portion. In some embodiments, the main body portion, cheek retractor portion, and suction connector portion (and sub-portions thereof) may be molded in one piece, preferably by injection molding. In an exemplary embodiment, the mouthpiece may be made of a material that is flexible, translucent, conducive to injection molding, high heat-resistant, and autoclavable. Such a material may include silicone. Because the mouthpiece may be made of a high heat-resistant and autoclavable material, such a mouthpiece may be reusable.

Claims (31)

1. A mouthpiece comprising:

a main body portion having a portion at a first end wider than a rectangular portion at a second end, the main body portion including pocket enclosing an interior space, the main body portion comprising:

a first wall in a shape defined by an exterior edge, wherein the first wall extends from the first end to the second end, and wherein the first wall is wider at the first end than at the second end,

a second wall located at a distance from the first wall, the second wall in a shape defined by an exterior edge that corresponds to the shape of the first wall, wherein the second wall also extends from the first end to the second end, and wherein the second wall is wider at the first end than at the second end, the second wall comprising:

an elongated stability bar lying within the interior space between an interior surface of the first wall and an interior surface of the second wall, the elongated stability bar extending along a longitudinal axis of the main body portion between the first end and the second end into the rectangular portion, and wherein the second wall and the elongated stability bar are molded in one piece, and

a bridge structure that includes a plurality of protrusions integral with and protruding from the interior surface of the second wall and substantially extending across the distance between the first wall and the second wall, wherein the bridge structure is not attached to the first wall, and wherein the plurality of protrusions of the bridge structure protrude from the interior surface of the second wall in a wave shape comprising one or more crests and one or more troughs, and

a connector wall that connects the first wall to the second wall; and

a cheek retractor connected to the second end of the main body portion.

2. The mouthpiece of claim 1 , wherein the cheek retractor extends away laterally from the main body portion; and the cheek retractor having a surface that applies pressure when bent, wherein the pressure is based on resilience of a material that forms the cheek retractor.

3. The mouthpiece of claim 2 , wherein the rectangular portion is narrower than the cheek retractor.

4. The mouthpiece of claim 3 , wherein a thickness of the material of the elongated stability bar reinforces a resilience of the rectangular portion.

5. The mouthpiece of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of protrusions of the bridge structure comprise a plurality of spaced contact points.

6. The mouthpiece of claim 1 , further comprising a suction connector portion that connects the interior space of the pocket to a vacuum source, wherein activation of the vacuum source provides suction of fluids from the interior space of the pocket toward the vacuum source.

7. The mouthpiece of claim 1 , wherein the main body portion is formed by injection-molding as one piece.

8. The mouthpiece of claim 1 , wherein a material that forms the main body portion is a flexible, translucent, high heat-resistant, autoclavable silicone-based material.

9. The mouthpiece of claim 1 , wherein the first wall and the second wall have different thicknesses from one another.

10. The mouthpiece of claim 1 , further comprising a mouth prop, where the mouth prop is engaged to a suction connector portion.

11. The mouthpiece of claim 10 , wherein the mouth prop is detachable and comprises a bite block portion and a strap portion.

12. The mouthpiece of claim 11 , wherein the bite block portion comprises an opening corresponding to a plug connected to the main body portion.

13. The mouthpiece of claim 11 , wherein the strap portion is configured to fit around a suction connector portion.

14. The mouthpiece of claim 13 , wherein an external surface of the suction connector portion comprises a notch region corresponding to the strap portion, and wherein an external surface of the strap portion is substantially flush with a remaining external surface of the suction connector portion when the strap portion sits in the notch region.

15. The mouthpiece of claim 10 , wherein the mouth prop is injection-molded in one piece.

16. A dental mouthpiece comprising:

a main body portion that is wider at a first end than a rectangular portion at a second end, the main body portion including pocket enclosing an interior space, the main body portion comprising

a first wall extending between the first end and the second end, and wherein the first wall is wider at the first end than at the second end,

a second wall located at a distance from the first wall, the second wall extending between the first end and the second end, and wherein the second wall is also wider at the first end than at the second end, the second wall comprising:

an elongated stability bar lying within the interior space between an interior surface of the first wall and an interior surface of the second wall, the elongated stability bar extending along a longitudinal axis of the main body portion between the first end and the second end into the rectangular portion, wherein the elongated stability bar reinforces a thickness of material along the longitudinal axis, and

a bridge structure that includes a plurality of protrusions integral with and protruding from the interior surface of the second wall and substantially extending across the distance between the first wall and the second wall, wherein the bridge structure is not attached to the first wall, and wherein the plurality of protrusions of the bridge structure protrude from the interior surface of the second wall in a wave shape comprising one or more crests and one or more troughs, and

a connector wall that connects the first wall to the second wall; and

a cheek retractor connected to the second end of the main body portion.

17. The dental mouthpiece of claim 16 , wherein the main body portion includes a wider portion at the first end and a narrower portion at the second end, and wherein the elongated stability bar extends through the narrower portion towards the cheek retractor.
