Abstract

A spinal stabilization system may include a pair of structural members coupled to at least a portion of a human vertebra with connectors. Connectors may couple structural members to spinous processes. Some embodiments of a spinal stabilization system may include fasteners that couple structural members to vertebrae. In some embodiments, a spinal stabilization system, provides three points of fixation for a single vertebral level. A fastener may fixate a facet joint between adjacent vertebrae and couple a stabilization structural member to a vertebra. Connectors may couple the structural members to the spinous processes of the vertebrae. Use of a spinal stabilization system may improve the stability of a weakened or damaged portion of a spine. When used in conjunction with an implant or other device, the spinal stabilization system may immobilize vertebrae and allow for fusion of the implant or other device with vertebrae.

Claims (57)

1. A spinal stabilization device for stabilizing a portion of the spine, comprising:

a first structural member, the first structural member including:

a first portion extending generally along a first plane;

a second portion connected to the first portion and extending generally along a second plane different from the first plane; and

a third portion connected to the second portion and extending generally along a third plane different from the first plane and the second plane, the third portion including an opening extending from a first side surface to a second side surface of the third portion of the first structural member;

a second structural member, the second structural member including:

a first portion extending generally along a first plane;

a second portion connected to the first portion and extending generally along a second plane different from the first plane; and

a third portion connected to the second portion and extending generally along a third plane different from the first plane and the second plane, the third portion including an opening extending from a first side surface to a second side surface of the third portion of the second structural member; and

a connector configured to be positioned through the opening in the third portion of the first structural member and the opening in the third portion of the second structural member.

2. The spinal stabilization device of claim 1 , further comprising at least one aperture extending through the first portion of the first structural member and at least one aperture extending through the first portion of the second structural member.

3. The spinal stabilization device of claim 2 , wherein the at least one aperture extending through the first portion of the first structural member comprises a first aperture at a first end of the first portion and a second aperture at the second end of the first portion.

4. The stabilization device of claim 2 , wherein the at least one aperture extending through the first portion of the second structural member comprises a first aperture at a first end of the first portion and a second aperture at the second end of the first portion.

The spinal stabilization device of claim 2 , further comprising a first fastener configured to be positioned through the at least one aperture extending through the first portion of the first structural member and a second fastener configured to be positioned through the at least one aperture extending through the first portion of the second structural member.

6. The spinal stabilization device of claim 5 , wherein the first fastener and the second fastener are configured to engage a vertebrae.

7. The spinal stabilization device of claim 1 , wherein the third portion of the first structural member and the third portion of the second structural member are configured to be positioned adjacent to a surface of a spinous process.

8. The spinal stabilization device of claim 1 , wherein the first portion of the first structural member and the first portion of the second structural member each have a length configured to extend from a first vertebrae to a second vertebrae.

9. The spinal stabilization device of claim 1 , wherein the connector comprises:

a first member comprising a cavity extending longitudinally through at least a portion of the first member, wherein a surface of the cavity comprises threads; and

a second member comprising threads on at least a portion of the second member and configured to couple to the first member.

10. A spinal stabilization device for stabilizing a portion of the spine, comprising:

a first structural member, the first structural member including:

a first elongated portion having a first end and a second end; and

a second elongated portion having a first end and a second end;

wherein the first end of the first elongated portion and the first end of the second elongated portion are joined at an apex and the second end of the first elongated portion and the second end of the second elongated portion extend away from the apex;

a second structural member, the second structural member including:

a first elongated portion having a first end and a second end; and

a second elongated portion having a first end and a second end;

wherein the first end of the first elongated portion and the first end of the second elongated portion are joined at an apex and the second end of the first elongated portion and the second end of the second elongated portion extend away from the apex; and

a connector configured to extend through a first opening through a thickness of the apex of the first structural member to the apex of the second structural member.

11. The spinal stabilization device of claim 10 , further comprising a second opening through the apex of the second structural member.

12. The spinal stabilization device of claim 11 , wherein the connector is configured to extend through the second opening to couple the first structural member to the second structural member.

13. The spinal stabilization device of claim 10 , further comprising a first aperture in the second end of the first elongated portion of the first structural member and a second aperture in the second end of the second elongated portion of the first structural member.

14. The spinal stabilization system of claim 13 , further comprising a first fastener configured to be positioned through the first aperture of the first structural member and a second fastener configured to be positioned through the second aperture of the first structural member.

15. The spinal stabilization device of claim 10 , further comprising a first aperture in the second end of the first elongated portion of the second structural member and a second aperture in the second end of the second elongated portion of the second structural member.

16. The spinal stabilization system of claim 15 , further comprising a first fastener configured to be positioned through the first aperture of the second structural member and a second fastener configured to be positioned through the second aperture of the second structural member.

17. The spinal stabilization device of claim 10 , wherein the apex of the first structural member and the apex of the second structural member are configured to be positioned adjacent to a surface of a spinous process.

18. The spinal stabilization device of claim 10 , wherein the connector comprises:

a first member comprising a cavity extending longitudinally through at least a portion of the first member, wherein a surface of the cavity comprises threads; and

a second member comprising threads on at least a portion of the second member and configured to couple to the first member.

19. A spinal stabilization device for stabilizing a portion of the spine, comprising:

a first structural member, the first structural member including:

a first portion configured to extend between adjacent first and second vertebrae, the first portion including a first aperture extending through a first end thereof and a second aperture extending through a second end thereof;

a second portion connected to the second end of the first portion and extending at an angle therefrom; and

a third portion connected to the second portion and extending at an angle therefrom, the third portion including an opening extending therethrough;

a second structural member, the second structural member including:

a first portion configured to extend between adjacent first and second vertebrae, the first portion including a first aperture extending through a first end thereof and a second aperture extending through a second end thereof;

a second portion connected to the second end of the first portion and extending at an angle therefrom; and

a third portion connected to the second portion and extending at an angle therefrom, the third portion including an opening extending therethrough;

a connector configured to be positioned through the opening in the third portion of the first structural member and the opening in the third portion of the second structural member; and

a first fastener configured to be positioned through the first aperture of the first structural member;

a second fastener configured to be positioned through the second aperture of the first structural member;

a third fastener configured to be positioned through the first aperture of the second structural member; and

a fourth fastener configured to be positioned through the second aperture of the second structural member.

20. The spinal stabilization device of claim 19 , wherein the connector comprises:

a first member comprising a cavity extending longitudinally through at least a portion of the first member, wherein a surface of the cavity comprises threads; and

a second member comprising threads on at least a portion of the second member and configured to couple to the first member.
