Abstract

A system includes a milking box and a robotic arm. The milking box comprises a stall portion that houses a dairy livestock with four teats. The robotic arm performs the following operation for a plurality of teats of the dairy livestock: retrieves a cup; attaches the cup to a teat; and detaches the cup from the teat. The cup is maintained within the stall portion of the milking box from the time that the cup is attached to a first teat of the dairy livestock through the time that the cup is attached to a last teat of the dairy livestock. The cup is retracted into an equipment area of the milking box after it is detached from the last teat of the dairy livestock.

Claims (27)

1. A system, comprising:

a milking box comprising a stall portion that houses a dairy livestock with four teats;

an equipment portion of the milking box located behind the stall portion of the milking box;

a robotic arm positioned in the equipment portion of the milking box and that, for a plurality of teats of the dairy livestock:

retrieves a cup;

attaches the cup to a teat; and

detaches the cup from the teat;

maintains the cup within the stall portion of the milking box from the time that the cup is attached to a first teat of the dairy livestock through the time that the cup is attached to a last teat of the dairy livestock; and

wherein the cup is retracted into the equipment portion of the milking box after it is detached from the last teat of the dairy livestock.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the cup comprises a preparation cup.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the cup comprises a teat cup.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the robotic arm performs its operation in a sequence of right front teat, left front teat, left rear teat, and right rear teat.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein retrieving the cup comprises retrieving the cup from the left side of an equipment portion of the milking box.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the robotic arm performs its operation in a sequence of left front teat, right front teat, right rear teat, and left rear teat.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein retrieving the cup comprises retrieving the cup from the right side of an equipment area of the milking box.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the robotic arm performs its operations on all four teats of the dairy livestock.

9. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a controller that determines a position of a teat of the dairy livestock and controls the position of the robotic arm for attachment of the preparation cup to the teat based at least in part on the determined position of the teat.

10. A system, comprising:

a milking box comprising a stall portion that houses a dairy livestock having four teats;

an equipment portion of the milking box located behind the stall portion of the milking box;

a robotic arm positioned in the equipment portion of the milking box and that attaches and detaches a preparation cup to a plurality of teats of the dairy livestock, wherein the robotic arm further maintains the cup within the stall portion of the milking box from the time that the cup is attached to a first teat of the dairy livestock through the time that the cup is attached to a last teat of the dairy livestock; and

wherein the cup is retracted into the equipment portion of the milking box after it is detached from the last teat of the dairy livestock.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the robotic arm is further operable to retrieve the preparation cup from the equipment portion of the milking box prior to attaching it to the first teat of the dairy livestock.

12. The system of claim 10 , further comprising a controller that determines a position of a teat of the dairy livestock and controls the position of the robotic arm for attachment of the preparation cup to the teat based at least in part on the determined position of the teat.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the robotic arm attaches and detaches the preparation cup to the teats of the dairy cow in the following sequence: right front teat, left front teat, left rear teat, and right rear teat.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the robotic arm attaches and detaches the preparation cup to the teats of the dairy cow in the following sequence: left front teat, right front teat, right rear teat, and left rear teat.

15. The system of claim 10 , wherein the robotic attacher approaches the dairy livestock from behind the dairy livestock.
