Abstract

An apparatus includes a drum to draw in or let out a line and a motor and transmission coupled to the drum to apply a torque thereto. A power sensor measures an amount of current drawn and/or voltage supplied to the motor as the motor applies torque to the line. A processor calculates an amount of weight that is attached to the line based on the amount of power consumed by the motor. Alternatively, if the motor is operated in generator mode, a current sensor may measure an amount of current generated by the motor and the processor may calculate an amount of weight that is attached to the line based at least partly on an amount of current that is generated by the motor.

Claims (41)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a drum to draw in or let out a line the drum comprising a helical groove formed in an outer surface thereof to accommodate multiple wraps of the line, a width of the groove being smaller than a diameter of the line and a depth of the groove being deeper than a radius of the line allowing sides of the groove to reach around and grip sides of the line;

a guide tracking and extending into the groove immediately over the line in order to push the line into the groove;

a motor and transmission located in the drum and coupled to the drum to apply a torque thereto;

an absolute position encoder to detect an angular position of the drum;

a sensor to measure an amount of power consumed by the motor as the motor applies torque to the line;

a microcontroller located beneath a cover plate of an end of the drum, that monitors a lifting speed of the drum by detecting a change in angular position of the drum over time, an amount of weight that is attached to the line based at least partly on the amount of power consumed by the motor, and an amount of line let out from or drawn into the drum based at least partly on the change in angular position of the drum over time; and

wherein the drum is controlled by the processor based on the monitored lifting speed of the drum, the weight that is attached to the line, and the amount of line let out or drawn into the drum.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to determine a speed of the weight based on the angular speed and a radius of the drum.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the processor is further configured to determine the amount of weight that is attached to the line based on the amount of power and the speed of the weight.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a weight gauge to indicate the amount of weight to a user.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the weight gauge is provided on a remote control associated with the apparatus.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising functionality to shut down the motor in the event the weight exceeds a specified amount.

7. A method comprising:

using a drum to draw in or let out a line the drum comprising a helical groove formed in an outer surface thereof to accommodate multiple wraps the line, a width of the groove being smaller than a diameter of the line and a depth of the groove being deeper than a radius of the line allowing sides of the groove to reach around and grip sides of the line;

pushing the line into the groove with a guide that extends into the groove immediately over the line;

driving the drum with a motor and transmission located in the drum and coupled to the drum;

providing an absolute position encoder to detect an angular position of the drum;

monitoring, with a microcontroller located beneath a cover plate of an end of the drum, an amount of line let out from or drawn into the drum based at least partly on the change in angular position of the drum over time;

measuring an amount of torque on the drum as a result of a load attached to the line;

determining the load's weight at least partly from the amount of torque; and

automatically rotating the drum to lift or lower the load based on a weight of the load, the amount of line let out from or drawn into the drum, and the angular position of the drum.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein measuring the amount of torque comprises measuring at least one of: an amount of power consumed by the motor and a speed of the drum.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein automatically rotating the drum comprises automatically raising the load in the event the load falls below a specified threshold.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein automatically rotating the drum comprises automatically raising the load in the event the load falls below a specified threshold for a specified period of time.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein automatically rotating the drum comprises automatically lowering the load in the event the load exceeds a specified threshold.

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein automatically rotating the drum comprises automatically reversing the direction of the drum.

13. The method of claim 7 , further comprising reporting an error in the event the weight reaches a specified threshold.

14. A method comprising:

using a drum to draw in or let out a line, the drum comprising a helical groove formed in an outer surface thereof to accommodate multiple wraps the line, a width of the groove being smaller than a diameter of the line and a depth of the groove being deeper than a radius of the line allowing sides of the groove to reach around and grip sides of the line;

pushing the line into the groove with a guide that extends into the groove immediately over the line;

driving the drum with a motor and transmission located in the drum and coupled to the drum;

providing an absolute position encoder to detect an angular position of the drum;

monitoring, with a microcontroller located beneath a cover plate of an end of the drum, an amount of line let out from or drawn into the drum based at least partly on the change in angular position of the drum over time;

measuring an amount of torque on the drum as a result of a load attached to the line;

determining the load's weight at least partly from the amount of torque; and

automatically rotating the drum to lift or lower the load using a processor based on a weight of the load, the amount of line let out from or drawn into the drum, and the angular position of the drum.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein automatically rotating the drum comprises automatically rotating the drum to lift or lower the load in the event the weight changes by a specified amount in a specified amount of time.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein measuring the amount of torque comprises measuring at least one of: an amount of power consumed by the motor and a speed of the drum.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein automatically rotating the drum comprises automatically raising the load in the event the weight changes by a specified amount.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein automatically rotating the drum comprises automatically lowering the load in the event the weight changes by a specified amount.
