Abstract

A foam-air mattress includes a mattress housing, including a top layer and a bottom layer; a plurality of air chambers, disposed between the top layer and the bottom layer, wherein the plurality of air chambers are configured to be connected to a pumping system via a tubing assembly; and a plurality of compartments formed by the mattress housing and the plurality of air chambers, configured to accept foam inserts. The plurality of air chambers, when inflated by the pumping system, are configured to compress foam inserts disposed within the plurality of compartments so as to increase the density of the foam inserts. This arrangement has applications in both the consumer and medical airbed contexts, as well as in other support system contexts, such as seat cushions for chairs.

Claims (29)

1. A foam-air mattress, comprising:

a mattress housing, comprising a top layer and a bottom layer;

a plurality of air chambers, disposed between the top layer and the bottom layer, wherein the plurality of air chambers are configured to be connected to a pumping system via a tubing assembly; and

a plurality of compartments formed by the mattress housing and the plurality of air chambers, configured to accept foam inserts, wherein the plurality of air chambers are sidewalls of the plurality of compartments, the sidewalk being disposed between the top layer and the bottom layer;

wherein the plurality of air chambers, when inflated by the pumping system, are configured to compress foam inserts disposed within the plurality of compartments so as to increase the density of the foam inserts.

2. The foam-air mattress of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of compartments each have an open end, wherein the foam inserts are insertable and removable via the open ends of the compartments.

3. The foam-air mattress of claim 1 , wherein the tubing assembly comprises a plurality of tubes, each of the plurality of tubes being connected to one of the plurality of air chambers.

4. The foam-air mattress of claim 1 , wherein the air chambers are grouped into zones such that air chambers corresponding to a particular zone are configured to be simultaneously inflated or deflated independent from air chambers of a different zone.

5. The foam-air mattress of claim 1 , wherein each of the air chambers is disposed in a side-to-side orientation with respect to the mattress housing and each of the air chambers is substantially parallel to the other air chambers.

6. The foam-air mattress of claim 1 , wherein a first group of air chambers are disposed in a first orientation with respect to the mattress housing, and a second group of air chambers are disposed in a second orientation with respect to the mattress housing different from the first orientation.

7. The foam-air mattress of claim 1 , wherein the top layer of the mattress housing is substantially flat when the plurality of air chambers are inflated.

8. The foam-air mattress of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of compartments includes a first wall formed by a first air chamber, a second wall formed by a second air chamber, a third wall formed by the top layer of the mattress housing, and a fourth wall formed by the bottom layer of the mattress housing.

9. The foam-air mattress of claim 1 , wherein the bottom layer and/or the top layer of the mattress housing include one or more additional air chambers, wherein the one or more additional air chambers, when inflated by the pumping system, are also configured to compress foam inserts disposed within the plurality of compartments so as to increase the density of the foam inserts.

10. The foam-air mattress of claim 1 , wherein welds are used to connect the plurality of air chambers to the top and bottom layers of the mattress housing, and the plurality of air chambers extend beyond ends of the respective welds.

11. A foam-air support system, comprising:

a first layer and a second layer of a support housing;

a plurality of air chambers disposed as sidewalls between the first layer and the second layer, wherein the plurality of air chambers are arranged so as to form a plurality of compartments, each of the plurality of compartments being encapsulated in part by at least one air chamber of the plurality of air chambers;

a plurality of foam inserts disposed within the plurality of compartments; and

a tubing assembly configured to connect the plurality of air chambers to a pumping system;

wherein the plurality of air chambers and foam inserts are arranged such that inflation of an air chamber is configured to compress an adjacent foam insert so as to increase the density of the adjacent foam insert.

12. The foam-air support system of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of compartments each have an open end, wherein the foam inserts are insertable and removable via the open ends of the compartments.

13. The foam-air support system of claim 11 , wherein the tubing assembly comprises a plurality of tubes, each of the plurality of tubes being connected to one of the plurality of air chambers.

14. The foam-air support system of claim 11 , wherein the air chambers are grouped into zones such that air chambers corresponding to a particular zone are configured to be simultaneously inflated or deflated independent from air chambers of a different zone.

15. The foam-air support system of claim 11 , wherein each of the air chambers is disposed in a side-to-side orientation with respect to the support housing and each of the air chambers is substantially parallel to the other air chambers.

16. The foam-air support system of claim 11 , wherein a first group of air chambers are disposed in a first orientation with respect to the support housing, and a second group of air chambers are disposed in a second orientation with respect to the support housing different from the first orientation.

17. The foam-air support system of claim 11 , wherein the first layer is a top layer of the support housing, and the first layer is substantially flat when the plurality of air chambers are inflated.

18. The foam-air support system of claim 11 , wherein a particular compartment of the plurality of compartments is encapsulated by a first wall formed by a first air chamber, a second wall formed by a second air chamber, a third wall formed by the first layer of the support housing, and a fourth wall formed by the second layer of the support housing.

19. The foam-air support system of claim 11 , wherein the first layer and/or the second layer of the support housing include one or more additional air chambers, wherein the one or more additional air chambers, when inflated by the pumping system, are also configured to compress an adjacent foam insert so as to increase the density of the adjacent foam insert.

20. The foam-air support system of claim 11 , wherein welds are used to connect the plurality of air chambers to the top and bottom layers of the support housing, and the plurality of air chambers extend beyond ends of the respective welds.
