Abstract

A golf ball includes a ‘dual core’ formed from an inner core layer and an outer core layer. The inner core has an outer surface and a center and is typically formed from a substantially-homogenous rubber composition such that the center of the core has a hardness of about 72 Shore C to about 78 Shore C and a trans content of about 5% to 9%, and the outer surface of the inner core has a trans content of about 5% to 9%. The trans content of the outer surface and the center of the inner core are preferably within 2% of each other and, more preferably are substantially the same to define a zero trans gradient along a radius of the inner core.

Claims (23)

1 . A golf ball comprising:

an inner core having a first outer surface and a geometric center and being formed from a first substantially homogenous rubber composition such that the geometric center has a hardness of about 72 Shore C to about 78 Shore C and a trans content of about 5% to 9% and the first outer surface has a trans content of about 5% to 9%;

an outer core layer disposed about the inner core and being formed from a second substantially homogenous rubber composition such that the outer core layer has a trans content of about 15% to 25%; and

a cover layer disposed about the outer core layer comprising a castable polyurea or a castable polyurethane;

wherein a hardness of the first outer surface is 57 Shore C to 63 Shore C and is lower than a hardness of the geometric center to define a negative hardness of about −1 to −15, and the trans content of the first outer surface and the geometric center are substantially the same.

2 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the outer core layer has a trans content of about 20% to 25%.

3 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the inner core has an outer diameter of about 0.75 inches to about 1.4 inches and the intermediate layer has an outer diameter of about 1.5 inches to about 1.55 inches.

4 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the cover layer comprises an inner cover layer and an outer cover layer.

5 . A golf ball comprising:

an inner core having a first outer surface and a geometric center and being formed from a first substantially homogenous rubber composition such that the geometric center has a hardness of about 52 Shore C to about 58 Shore C, and the first outer surface has a trans content of about 15% to 25%, the geometric center has a trans content of about 10% to 15%, and the trans content of the outer surface is greater than the trans content of the geometric center by about 10% to 15% to define a trans gradient;

an outer core layer disposed about the inner core and being formed from a second substantially homogenous rubber composition such that the outer core layer has a trans content of about 6% to 12%; and

a cover layer disposed about the outer core layer comprising a castable polyurea or a castable polyurethane;

wherein a hardness of the first outer surface is about 72 to 78 Shore C and is greater than a hardness of the geometric center to define a positive hardness gradient of about 1 to 20.

6 . A golf ball comprising:

an inner core having an outer surface and a geometric center and being formed from a first substantially homogenous rubber composition;

an outer core layer disposed about the inner core and being formed from a second substantially homogenous rubber composition, the outer core layer having a trans gradient of about 20% to 45%; and

a cover layer disposed about the outer core layer;

wherein the outer surface has a trans content of about 6% to 10%, the geometric center has a trans content of about 1% to 3%, and the trans content of the outer surface is greater than the trans content of the geometric center by about 6% or greater to define a trans gradient.

7 . The golf ball of claim 6 , wherein the outer core layer has a surface trans content substantially greater than a trans content of an outer core layer inner surface.

8 . The golf ball of claim 6 , wherein the outer core layer has a surface trans content substantially less than a trans content of an outer core layer inner surface.

9 . The golf ball of claim 6 , wherein a hardness of the outer surface is lower than a hardness of the geometric center to define a negative hardness gradient of about −1 to −15.

10 . The golf ball of claim 9 , wherein the negative hardness gradient is about −1 to −5.

11 . The golf ball of claim 6 , wherein a hardness of the outer surface is greater than a hardness of the geometric center to define a positive hardness gradient of about 0 to 5.
