Abstract

A process and catalyst that provides for the upgrading of a high endpoint gas oil feedstock that contains significant concentrations of organic sulfur compound and organic nitrogen compounds. Included among the sulfur compounds are the dimethyl-dibenzothiophenes and derivative thereof. The catalyst of the process is an additive impregnated composition or a derivative thereof that further comprises cobalt and molybdenum. The process provides for the upgrading the high endpoint gas oil feedstock by significantly reducing the difficult to remove thiophene and nitrogen compounds and the process does this with a significantly reduced hydrogen consumption relative to processes using comparative catalysts.

Claims (7)

1. A process for upgrading a high endpoint gas oil feedstock having a D-2887 distillation T95 greater than 400° C. and that comprises a concentration of organic sulfur and a concentration of organic nitrogen, wherein said process comprises:

contacting said high endpoint gas oil feedstock with an additive impregnated composition, wherein said additive impregnated composition, comprises a support material, a cobalt component, a molybdenum component, and a heterocyclic additive comprising a cyclic ester compound, in the presence of hydrogen and under process conditions that provide for an upgraded high endpoint gas oil having reduced concentrations of organic nitrogen and organic sulfur compounds below those of said high endpoint gas oil feedstock and that provide for an hydrogen consumption rate.

2. A process as recited in claim 1 , wherein said hydrogen consumption rate for said process for upgrading said high endpoint gas oil feedstock is below that of certain comparative catalyst compositions.

3. A process as recited in claim 1 , wherein said cobalt component is present in said support material in an amount in the range of from 0.5 wt. % to 20 wt. %.

4. A process as recited in claim 3 , wherein said molybdenum component is present in said support material in an amount in the range of from 5 wt. % to 50 wt. %.

5. A process as recited in claim 4 , wherein said heterocyclic additive is selected from the group of heterocyclic, polar compounds of the formula C x H n N y O z , wherein x is an integer of 3 or larger; y is either 0, 1, 2 or 3; z is either 1, 2 or 3; and n is the number of hydrogen atoms required to fill the remaining bonds with the carbon atoms of the molecule.

6. A process as recited in claim 5 , wherein said cyclic ester is propylene carbonate.
