Surgical instrument comprising a closing drive and a firing drive operated from the same rotatable output
View Patent ↗A surgical instrument can comprise an end effector, a first drive configured to perform a first end effector function, a second drive configured to perform a second end effector function, and a rotatable shaft. The rotatable shaft can comprise a first thread, wherein the first drive is engageable with the first thread to perform the first end effector function, and a second thread, wherein the second drive is engageable with the second thread to perform the second end effector function, and wherein the first thread is at least partially co-extensive with or overlaps the second thread.
1. A surgical instrument, comprising:
an end effector, comprising:
a fastener cartridge comprising a plurality of fasteners removably stored therein; and
an anvil configured to deform said fasteners;
a closure drive configured to move said anvil relative to said fastener cartridge;
a firing drive configured to deploy said fasteners from said fastener cartridge; and
a rotatable shaft, comprising:
a first thread, wherein said closure drive is engageable with said first thread to move said anvil; and
a second thread, wherein said firing drive is engageable with said second thread to deploy said fasteners, and wherein said first thread at least partially overlaps said second thread.
2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a motor, wherein said motor comprises a rotatable output operably engaged with said rotatable shaft.

The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said closure drive comprises a closure pin engaged with said first thread, wherein said closure pin is configured to translate along a first path, wherein said firing drive comprises a firing nut threadably engaged with said second thread, wherein said firing nut is configured to translate along a second path, and wherein said first path and said second path at least partially overlap.
4. The surgical instrument of claim 3 , wherein said closure pin is configured to pass by said firing nut when translating along said first path.
5. The surgical instrument of claim 4 , wherein said firing nut comprises a slot defined therein, and wherein said closure pin is configured to pass through said slot.
6. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said first thread comprises a first thread pitch and said second thread comprises a second thread pitch, and wherein said first thread pitch is different than said second thread pitch.
7. The surgical instrument of claim 6 , wherein said first thread pitch comprises a non-constant thread pitch, and wherein said second thread pitch comprises a constant thread pitch.
8. A surgical instrument, comprising:
an end effector;
a first drive configured to perform a first end effector function;
a second drive configured to perform a second end effector function; and
a rotatable shaft, comprising:
a first thread, wherein said first drive is engageable with said first thread to perform said first end effector function; and
a second thread, wherein said second drive is engageable with said second thread to perform said second end effector function, and wherein said first thread is at least partially co-extensive with said second thread.
9. The surgical instrument of claim 8 , further comprising a motor, wherein said motor comprises a rotatable output operably engaged with said rotatable shaft.
10. The surgical instrument of claim 8 , wherein said first drive comprises a closure pin engaged with said first thread, wherein said closure pin is configured to translate along a first path, wherein said second drive comprises a firing nut threadably engaged with said second thread, wherein said firing nut is configured to translate along a second path, and wherein said first path and said second path are at least partially co-extensive.
11. The surgical instrument of claim 10 , wherein said closure pin is configured to pass by said firing nut when translating along said first path.
12. The surgical instrument of claim 11 , wherein said firing nut comprises a slot defined therein, and wherein said closure nut is configured to pass through said slot.
13. The surgical instrument of claim 8 , wherein said first thread comprises a first thread pitch and said second thread comprises a second thread pitch, and wherein said first thread pitch is different than said second thread pitch.
14. The surgical instrument of claim 13 , wherein said first thread pitch comprises a non-constant thread pitch, and wherein said second thread pitch comprises a constant thread pitch.
15. A surgical instrument, comprising:
an end effector, comprising:
a fastener cartridge comprising a plurality of fasteners removably stored therein; and
an anvil configured to deforms said fasteners;
a closure drive configured to move said anvil relative to said fastener cartridge;
a firing drive configured to deploy said fasteners from said fastener cartridge; and
a rotatable shaft, comprising:
a first thread, wherein said closure drive comprises a closure pin engageable with said first thread to move said anvil, and wherein said closure pin is configured to translate along a first path; and
a second thread, wherein said firing drive comprises a firing nut engageable with said second thread to deploy said fasteners, wherein said firing nut is configured to translate along a second path, and wherein said first path and said second path at least partially overlap.
16. The surgical instrument of claim 15 , wherein said closure pin is configured to pass by said firing nut when translating along said first path.
17. The surgical instrument of claim 16 , wherein said firing nut comprises a slot defined therein, and wherein said closure pin is configured to pass through said slot.
18. The surgical instrument of claim 15 , wherein said first thread comprises a first thread pitch and said second thread comprises a second thread pitch, and wherein said first thread pitch is different than said second thread pitch.
19. The surgical instrument of claim 18 , wherein said first thread pitch comprises a non-constant thread pitch, and wherein said second thread pitch comprises a constant thread pitch.
20. The surgical instrument of claim 15 , further comprising a motor, wherein said motor comprises a rotatable output operably engaged with said rotatable shaft.
