Abstract

A surgical instrument comprising a gap setting system is disclosed.

Claims (35)

1. A surgical instrument system, comprising:

a handle including an electric motor;

a first end effector operably engageable with said handle, wherein said first end effector comprises:

a first jaw comprising a first tissue supporting surface; and

a second jaw comprising a second tissue supporting surface, wherein said second jaw is movable relative to said first jaw between an open position and a closed position by said electric motor, and wherein a first tissue gap is defined between said first tissue supporting surface and said second tissue supporting surface when said second jaw is in said closed position;

a second end effector operably engageable with said handle in lieu of said first end effector, wherein said second end effector comprises:

a third jaw comprising a third tissue supporting surface; and

a fourth jaw comprising a fourth tissue supporting surface, wherein said fourth jaw is movable relative to said third jaw between an open position and a closed position by said electric motor, wherein a second tissue gap is defined between said third tissue supporting surface and said fourth tissue supporting surface when said fourth jaw is in said closed position, and wherein said second tissue gap is different than said first tissue gap; and

a gap setting system configured to preset said first tissue gap and said second tissue gap.

2. The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein said first jaw includes a first staple cartridge, and wherein said third jaw includes a second staple cartridge.

3. The surgical instrument system of claim 2 , wherein said first staple cartridge is removable from said first jaw, and wherein said second staple cartridge is removable from said third jaw.

4. The surgical instrument system of claim 3 , wherein said first staple cartridge includes a plurality of first staples removably positioned therein, wherein each said first staple is defined by a first height, wherein said second staple cartridge includes a plurality of second staples removably positioned therein, and wherein each said second staple is defined by a second height which is different than said first height.

5. The surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein said second jaw includes an anvil, and wherein said fourth jaw comprises an anvil.

6. A surgical instrument system, comprising:

a handle including an electric motor and a gap setting system;

a first end effector operably engageable with said handle, wherein said first end effector comprises:

a first jaw comprising a first tissue supporting surface and a slot configured to receive a cutting member; and

a second jaw comprising a second tissue supporting surface, wherein said second jaw is movable relative to said first jaw between an open position and a closed position by said electric motor during a first closure stroke, and wherein a first gap is defined between said first tissue supporting surface and said second tissue supporting surface when said second jaw is in said closed position;

a second end effector operably engageable with said handle in lieu of said first end effector, wherein said second end effector comprises:

a third jaw comprising a third tissue supporting surface and a slot configured to receive a cutting member; and

a fourth jaw comprising a fourth tissue supporting surface, wherein said fourth jaw is movable relative to said third jaw between an open position and a closed position by said electric motor during a second closure stroke, and wherein a second gap is defined between said third tissue supporting surface and said fourth tissue supporting surface when said fourth jaw is in said closed position; and

a firing member movable through a firing stroke when one of said first end effector and said second end effector is operably engaged with said handle, wherein said gap setting system is configured to set said first gap after said first closure stroke and prior to said firing stroke when said first end effector is operably engaged with said handle, wherein said gap setting system is configured to set said second gap after said second closure stroke and prior to said firing stroke when said second end effector is operably engaged with said handle, and wherein said second gap is different than said first gap.

7. A surgical instrument system, comprising:

a handle including an electric motor and a gap setting system;

a first end effector operably engageable with said handle, wherein said first end effector comprises:

a first staple cartridge, comprising:

a first tissue supporting surface; and

a slot configured to receive a cutting member; and

a first anvil comprising a second tissue supporting surface, wherein said first anvil is movable relative to said first staple cartridge between an open position and a closed position by said electric motor during a first closure stroke, and wherein a first gap is defined between said first tissue supporting surface and said second tissue supporting surface when said first anvil is in said closed position;

a second end effector operably engageable with said handle in lieu of said first end effector, wherein said second end effector comprises:

a second staple cartridge, comprising:

a third tissue supporting surface; and

a slot configured to receive a cutting member; and

a second anvil comprising a fourth tissue supporting surface, wherein said second anvil is movable relative to said second staple cartridge between an open position and a closed position by said electric motor during a second closure stroke, and wherein a second gap is defined between said third tissue supporting surface and said fourth tissue supporting surface when said second anvil is in said closed position; and

a firing member movable through a firing stroke when one of said first end effector and said second end effector is operably engaged with said handle, wherein said gap setting system is configured to set said first gap after said first closure stroke and prior to said firing stroke when said first end effector is operably engaged with said handle, wherein said gap setting system is configured to set said second gap after said second closure stroke and prior to said firing stroke when said second end effector is operably engaged with said handle, and wherein said second gap is different than said first gap.
