Abstract

Techniques for transmitting information to a recipient under their control are described. In some situations, the techniques are used in conjunction with a fax delivery system to provide, as part of a connection established to perform a fax transmission, a variety of functionalities to a human recipient that is participating as part of the connection, such as when the human recipient is contacted in error. In addition, in some situations, an interactive voice response system is used to receive and interpret input from a human recipient, such as in response to one or more control selections or options provided to the human recipient.

Claims (51)

1. A method of transmitting information based on live instructions, comprising:

in an information server executing on a computer processor, transmitting information to a device over a network connection based on whether a live instruction is received over the network connection from the device, including:

if the live instruction is received over the network connection from the device, then controlling the transmitting of the information over the network connection to the device based on the live instruction;

otherwise, automatically controlling the transmitting of the information over the network connection to the device based on a preexisting instruction defined before said transmitting of information.

2. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

determining whether a person is interacting with the device; and

based on said determination, sending a set of preexisting instruction options to control the transmitting of information to the device, the set of preexisting instruction options including an option corresponding to the live instruction selected by the person interacting with the device.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the set of preexisting instruction options includes at least one of: voice prompts to the person, or keyboard prompts to the person.

4. The method according to claim 2 , wherein said determining whether a person is interacting with the device includes:

receiving a device transmission from the device;

processing the device transmission to recognize a voice-based command from the person;

in a first state in which a voice-based command is recognized, controlling the transmitting of the information over the network connection to the device based on the voice-based command; and

in a second state in which no voice-based command is recognized, automatically controlling the transmitting of the information over the network connection to the device based on the preexisting instruction.

5. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the set of preexisting instruction options includes at least one of: voice prompts to the person, or keyboard prompts to the person, further comprising:

receiving a device transmission from the device over the network connection, the device transmission including a voice-based command from the person responsive to the at least one preexisting instruction option.

6. The method according to claim 5 , further comprising:

in response to the voice-based command, sending to the device subsequent instruction options; and

receiving a subsequent live instruction from the person interacting with device.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the preexisting instruction includes a plurality of instruction options, further comprising:

determining whether a person is interacting with the device; and

based on said determining, selecting at least one of the instruction options; and

sending the at least one instruction option over the network connection to the device.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the live instruction includes a selection from the person as to whether to transmit the information as a facsimile, an email, or an instant message.

9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the live instruction includes an input from a person interacting with the device, the input including at least one of: identification of a forwarding device to which to transmit the information, or identification of a future time at which to transmit the information to the device.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the live instruction includes a spoken instruction input by a person at the device and converted from speech-to-text.

11. A system of transmitting information based on live instructions, comprising:

an information server executing on a computer processor for transmitting information to a device over a network connection based on whether a live instruction is received over the network connection from the device, including:

if the live instruction is received over the network connection from the device, then controlling the transmitting of the information over the network connection to the device based on the live instruction;

otherwise, automatically controlling the transmitting of the information over the network connection to the device based on a preexisting instruction defined before said transmitting of information.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the information server further configured for:

determining whether a person is interacting with the device; and

based on said determination, sending a set of preexisting instruction options to control the transmitting of information to the device, the set of preexisting instruction options including an option corresponding to the live instruction selected by the person interacting with the device.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the set of preexisting instruction options includes at least one of: voice prompts to the person, or keyboard prompts to the person.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein said determining whether a person is interacting with the device includes:

receiving a device transmission from the device;

processing the device transmission to recognize a voice-based command from the person;

in a first state in which a voice-based command is recognized, controlling the transmitting of the information over the network connection to the device based on the voice-based command;

and

in a second state in which no voice-based command is recognized, automatically controlling the transmitting of the information over the network connection to the device based on the preexisting instruction.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the set of preexisting instruction options includes at least one of: voice prompts to the person, or keyboard prompts to the person, further comprising:

receiving a device transmission from the device over the network connection, the device transmission including a voice-based command from the person responsive to the at least one preexisting instruction option.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the information server further configured for:

in response to the voice-based command, sending to the device subsequent instruction options; and

receiving a subsequent live instruction from the person interacting with device.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the preexisting instruction includes a plurality of instruction options, the information server further configured for::

determining whether a person is interacting with the device; and

based on said determining, selecting at least one of the instruction options; and

sending the at least one instruction option over the network connection to the device.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the live instruction includes a selection from the person as to whether to transmit the information as a facsimile, an email, or an instant message.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the live instruction includes an input from a person interacting with the device, the input including at least one of: identification of a forwarding device to which to transmit the information, or identification of a future time at which to transmit the information to the device.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the live instruction includes a spoken instruction input by a person at the device and converted from speech-to-text.
