Abstract

A method of creating a graphical representation of data points in the form of a heatmap wherein the heatmap represents a plurality of multi-directional flow values between the data points, the method including the steps of: positioning data points on a heatmap for graphical representation, calculating bi-directional flow values between at least a first and second data point, determining the intensity and direction of a predominant flow from the bi-directional flow values, and graphically representing the predominant flow and bi-directional flows between the data points in the heatmap.

Claims (33)

1. A method implemented on an electronic computing device of creating a graphical representation of physical localities within an area in the form of a heatmap wherein the heatmap represents a plurality of multi-directional traffic flow values between the physical localities within the area, the method including the steps of:

on the electronic computing device, positioning physical localities on a heatmap for graphical representation;

determining traffic at each of the physical localities;

calculating bi-directional flow values between a plurality of physical locality pairs;

determining the intensity and direction of a predominant traffic flow from the bi-directional flow values for each of the plurality of physical locality pairs; and

graphically representing the traffic and the predominant traffic flow and bi-directional traffic flows between the physical localities in the heatmap, wherein heat values for each heat point on the heatmap are based on the traffic and the bi-directional traffic flow values near the heat point and the distance the traffic and the bi-directional flow values are from the heat point and wherein a width of the traffic flow corresponding to a physical locality on the graphical representation represents the intensity of a bi-directional traffic flow value at the physical locality, the width increasing as the intensity increases.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the heat values are weighted heat values and are calculated using a weighted distance function.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the weighted distance function is an inverse distance weighted (IDW) function.

4. The method of claim 1 further including the step of:

calculating a trapezoid distribution between each of the physical locality pairs, where the length of the parallel surfaces of the trapezoid distribution at the physical locality is based on the value of the calculated traffic flow emanating from each represented physical locality.

5. The method of claim 1 further including the step of:

calculating a triangular prism distribution between each of the physical locality pairs, where the height of the triangular prism at each physical locality is based on the value of the calculated traffic flow emanating from each represented physical locality.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the prism height corresponds to one or more of a range of colors or shadings.

7. The method of claim 1 further including the steps of representing traffic flow start values at the physical localities by calculating conical data distribution values around the physical localities based on the traffic flow start value associated with that physical locality.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the area is a casino.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the physical localities are the physical location of gaming assets within the casino.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the multi-directional traffic flow values are representative of the movement of people between gaming assets within the casino.

11. A graphical computing system for creating a graphical representation of physical localities within an area in the form of a heatmap wherein the heatmap represents a plurality of multi-directional traffic flow values between the physical localities within the area, the system including:

a processor; and

a memory device, the memory device including instructions that when executed by the processor cause the graphical computing system to implement:

a node determination module arranged to position physical localities on a heatmap for graphical representation;

a flow determination module arranged to calculate the traffic at each of the physical localities and to calculate the bi-directional traffic flow values between a plurality of physical locality pairs;

a heat determination module arranged to determine the intensity and direction of a predominant flow from the bi-directional traffic flow values for each of the physical locality pairs;

a rendering module arranged to graphically represent the traffic and the predominant traffic flow and bi-directional traffic flows between the physical localities in the heatmap, wherein heat values for each heat point on the heatmap are based on the traffic and the bi-directional traffic flow values near the heat point and the distance the traffic and the bi-directional flow values are from the heat point and wherein a width of the traffic flow corresponding to a physical locality on the graphical representation represents the intensity of a bidirectional traffic flow value at the physical locality, the width increasing as the intensity increases.

12. The system of claim 11 wherein the heat values are weighted heat values and are calculated using a weighted distance function.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the weighted distance function is an inverse distance weighted (IDW) function.

14. The system of claim 11 wherein the heat determination module is further arranged to calculate a trapezoid distribution between each of the physical locality pairs, where the length of the parallel surfaces of the trapezoid distribution at the physical localities is based on the value of the calculated flow emanating from each represented physical locality.

15. The system of claim 11 wherein the heat determination module is further arranged to calculate a triangular prism distribution between each of the physical locality pairs, where the height of the triangular prism at each physical locality is based on the value of the calculated traffic flow emanating from each represented physical locality.

16. The system of claim 15 wherein the prism height corresponds to one or more of a range of colors or shadings.

17. The system of claim 11 further including a cone generation module arranged to represent traffic flow start values at the physical locality by calculating conical data distribution values around the physical locality based on the traffic flow start value associated with that physical locality.

18. The system of claim 11 wherein the area is a casino.

19. The system of claim 18 wherein the physical localities are the physical location of gaming assets within the casino.

20. The system of claim 19 wherein the multi-directional traffic flow values represent the movement of people between gaming assets within the casino.
