Abstract

An implantable lead connector configured for long term implantation and to electrically interconnect multiple medical devices and to channel electrical signals between said interconnected devices and a target organ, comprising: a first port adapted to receive a first signal suitable to stimulate a target tissue, a second port adapted to receive a second signal suitable to stimulate a target tissue, and a third port configured to connect to a target organ, wherein at least one of said first and second ports is configured to connect to a signal generator not integrated with said connector.

Claims (47)

1. A composite device, comprising:

first implantable pulse generator (IPG) circuitry subunit having at least one sensing input electrical connection;

second IPG circuitry subunit having at least one signal output electrical connection;

at least one lead connector configured to connect at least one lead to at least one target organ of a human body; and

interconnecting circuitry subunit having at least one first electrical connection to said at least one sensing input electrical connection, at least one second electrical connection to said at least one signal output electrical connection, and at least one third electrical connection to said at least one lead connector, wherein respective said at least one first, second, and third electrical connections are connected together within said interconnecting circuitry subunit, and wherein said interconnecting circuitry subunit selectively protects said at least one sensing input electrical connection of said first IPG circuitry subunit from a signal generated by said second IPG circuitry subunit on said at least one signal output electrical connection by temporarily increasing the serial impedance between said at least one first and third electrical connections to a value of at least 50 kilo-ohms and decreasing the serial impedance between said at least one second and third electrical connections to a value of at most 50 ohms;

wherein said first IPG circuitry subunit comprises a cardiac pacemaker or implantable cardiac defibrillator and said second IPG circuitry subunit comprises a Cardiac Contractility Modulation device circuitry, or wherein said second IPG circuitry subunit comprises a cardiac pacemaker or implantable cardiac defibrillator and said first IPG circuitry subunit comprises a Cardiac Contractility Modulation device circuitry.

2. A device according to claim 1 , wherein said first IPG circuitry subunit comprises a Cardiac Contractility Modulation device (CCM) circuitry.

3. A device according to claim 2 , wherein said second IPG circuitry subunit comprises a cardiac pacemaker or an implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD).

4. A device according to claim 1 , wherein said first IPG circuitry subunit comprises a cardiac pacemaker or ICD and the second IPG circuitry subunit comprises a CCM circuitry.

5. A device according to claim 1 , wherein said protecting comprises disconnecting said electrical connection.

6. A device according to claim 1 , wherein said protecting comprises increasing an impedance of said electrical connection enough to avoid a saturation of said protected sensing input.

7. A device according to claim 1 , wherein said protecting comprises protecting from a CCM signal on said lead.

8. A device according to claim 1 , wherein said first IPG circuitry subunit is configured to listen on said sensing input to activity of said second IPG circuitry subunit.

9. A device according to claim 1 , wherein said first IPG circuitry subunit is configured to listen on said sensing input to activity of tissue to which said at least one lead attached to said lead connector, is adapted to be connected.

10. A device according to claim 1 , wherein said first IPG circuitry subunit includes a CCM circuitry configured to listen on said sensing input to activity of said second IPG circuitry subunit and synchronize its activity thereto.

11. A device according to claim 1 , wherein said first IPG circuitry subunit includes a CCM circuitry configured to listen on said sensing input to activity of said second IPG circuitry subunit and modify at least one parameter of said CCM circuitry in response thereto.

12. A device according to claim 1 , wherein said first IPG circuitry subunit includes a CCM circuitry configured to listen on said sensing input and modify at least one parameter of said CCM circuitry in response to a determination of a paced or a natural beat.

13. A device according to claim 1 , wherein said first IPG circuitry subunit is configured to listen on said sensing input to activity of said second IPG circuitry subunit and also listen, via said interconnecting circuitry subunit to a physiological signal.

14. A device according to claim 1 , wherein said first IPG circuitry subunit is integrated with said interconnection circuitry subunit in a single unit.

15. A device according to claim 1 , wherein said first IPG circuitry subunit is integrated with said lead connector in a single subunit.

16. A device according to claim 1 , wherein said lead connector is integrated with said interconnection circuitry subunit in a single subunit.

17. A device according to claim 1 , wherein said interconnection circuitry subunit is configured to provide power to one or both of said first and second IPG circuitry subunits.

18. A device according to claim 1 , wherein said interconnection circuitry subunit comprises a plurality of voltage dependent serially connected impedance elements.

19. A device according to claim 1 , wherein said interconnection circuitry subunit comprises a plurality of voltage dependent parallel connected impedance elements.

20. A device according to claim 1 , wherein said interconnection circuitry subunit comprises at least one diode to provide said protection.

21. A device according to claim 1 , wherein said interconnection circuitry subunit interconnects a plurality of sensing inputs and or signal outputs of said first IPG to said lead connector.

A composite device according to claim 1 , wherein said second IPG circuitry subunit receives at least one physiological signal on said at least one signal output electrical connection, wherein said first IPG circuitry subunit generates at least one second signal on said at least one sensing input electrical connection, and wherein said interconnecting circuitry subunit selectively protects said at least one signal output electrical connection of said second IPG circuitry subunit from said at least one second signal generated by said first IPG circuitry subunit on said at least one sensing input electrical connection by increasing the impedance between said at least one second and third IPG electrical connections to a value of at least 50 kilo-ohms and decreasing the impedance between said at least one first and third IPG electrical connections to a value of at most 50 ohms.

A device according to claim 22 , wherein each of said first IPG circuitry subunit and said second IPG circuitry subunit is separately capable of sensing at least one physiological signal from said at least one lead and delivering said at least one signal and said at least one second signal respectively on said at least one lead to said organ for therapy in response to predetermined characteristics of said at least one physiological signal.

24. A composite device according to claim 22 , wherein said interconnecting circuitry subunit comprises at least one second data input line to receive an indication of said at least one second signal for said selective protection.

25. A composite device according to claim 22 , wherein said interconnecting circuitry subunit comprises electronic components connected to said first electrical connection for detecting said at least one second signal for said selective protection.

A composite device according to claim 1 , wherein said serial impedance between said at least one first and third electrical connections to a value of at least 200 kilo-ohms and decreasing the serial impedance between said at least one second and third electrical connections to a value of at most 10 ohms.

27. A composite device according to claim 1 , wherein said interconnecting circuitry subunit comprises at least one data input line to receive an indication of said at least one signal for said selective protection.

28. A composite device according to claim 1 , wherein said interconnecting circuitry subunit comprises electronic components connected to said second electrical connection for detecting said at least one signal for said selective protection.

29. A composite device, comprising:

first IPG circuitry subunit having at least one signal output electrical connection, one power output electrical connection and one power supply;

second IPG circuitry subunit having a power input electrical connection; and

interconnecting circuitry subunit having at least one first electrical connection each connected to said at least one signal output electrical connection, an input power electrical connection connected to said power output electrical connection and an output power electrical connection connected to said power input electrical connection which allows power to be shared between said first and said second IPG circuitry subunits, and wherein when said interconnecting circuitry subunit detects at least one output signal on one of said at least one first electrical connection said output power electrical connection is electronically disconnected from said input power electrical connection during said at least one output signal to selectively protect said second IPG circuitry subunit;

wherein said first IPG circuitry subunit comprises a cardiac pacemaker or implantable cardiac defibrillator and said second IPG circuitry subunit comprises a Cardiac Contractility Modulation device circuitry, or wherein said second IPG circuitry subunit comprises a cardiac pacemaker or implantable cardiac defibrillator and said first IPG circuitry subunit comprises a Cardiac Contractility Modulation device circuitry.

30. A device according to claim 29 , wherein said interconnecting circuitry subunit interconnects said first and second IPG circuitry subunits configured to share at least one lead to a target organ of a human body.

31. A device according to claim 29 , wherein said first IPG circuitry subunit comprises a pacemaker or ICD and wherein said second IPG circuitry subunit comprises a CCM circuitry.

32. A device according to claim 29 , wherein said second IPG circuitry subunit comprises a pacemaker or ICD and wherein said first IPG circuitry subunit comprises a CCM circuitry.

33. A device according to claim 29 , wherein said first IPG circuitry subunit and said second IPG circuitry subunit are in different housings.

34. A device according to claim 29 , wherein said first IPG circuitry subunit and said second IPG circuitry subunit are each have a battery for use as a power source.

35. A device according to claim 29 , wherein said interconnecting circuitry subunit comprises a battery to be used for said power sharing.

36. A device according to claim 29 , comprising a rechargeable battery.

37. A device according to claim 26 , wherein said interconnecting circuitry subunit is powered by at least one of said first and second IPG circuitry subunits.

38. A device according to claim 29 , wherein said interconnecting circuitry subunit selectively uses power from one of said one power supply and said signal output electrical connection.
