Abstract

Implantable materials having defined patterns of affinity regions for binding endothelial cells and providing for directed endothelial cell migration across the surface of the material. The affinity regions include photochemically altered regions of a material surface and physical members patterned on the material surface that exhibit a greater affinity for endothelial cell binding and migration than the remaining regions of the material surface.

Claims (19)

1. An implantable, biocompatible material, wherein at least one surface of the biocompatible material has a plurality of functional features patterned on the at least one surface, wherein the endothelial cell binding affinity of each of the functional features is greater than the endothelial cell binding affinity of the rest of the surface of the biocompatible material, and wherein each of the functional features has a width between about 10 μm and about 75 μm.

2. The implantable, biocompatible material according to claim 1 , wherein each of the functional features comprises photochemically altered regions of the biocompatible material.

3. The implantable, biocompatible material according to claim 2 , wherein each of the photochemically altered regions comprises a titanium oxide.

4. The implantable, biocompatible material according to claim 1 , wherein the biocompatible material comprises nickel-titanium alloy.

5. The implantable, biocompatible material according to claim 1 , wherein each of the functional features is made of a material selected from the group consisting of carbon and nickel-titanium alloy.

6. The implantable, biocompatible material according to claim 1 , wherein the functional features have a height between greater than 0μ to about 3.0μ.

7. The implantable, biocompatible material according to claim 1 , wherein each of the functional features comprises a focal adhesion point for affinity binding of endothelial cells.

8. The implantable, biocompatible material according to claim 1 , further comprising a gap distance between adjacent functional features between about 10 μm to about 75 μm.

An implantable, biocompatible material, comprising at least one original surface, wherein the at least one original surface has a patterned array of functional features on the at least one original surface that are at the same level as the surrounding original surface, wherein the patterned array of functional features has a surface energy that is different than the at least one original surface of the biocompatible material, wherein the different surface energy increases the rate of attachment of endothelial cells and the migration of endothelial cells relative to the original surface without the patterned array of functional features, and wherein each of the functional features has a width between about 10 μm and about 75 μm and a gap distance between adjacent functional features between about 10 μm and about 75 μm.

10. The implantable, biocompatible material according to claim 9 , wherein each of the functional features comprises photochemically altered regions of the biocompatible material.

11. The implantable, biocompatible material according to claim 10 , wherein each of the photochemically altered regions comprises a titanium oxide.

12. The implantable, biocompatible material according to claim 9 , wherein the biocompatible material comprises nickel-titanium alloy.

13. The implantable, biocompatible material according to claim 9 , wherein each of the functional features is made of a material selected from the group consisting of carbon and nickel-titanium alloy.

14. The implantable, biocompatible material according to claim 9 , wherein each of the functional features comprises a focal adhesion point for affinity binding of endothelial cells.

An implantable, biocompatible material, wherein at least one surface of the biocompatible material has a plurality of functional features patterned on the at least one surface, wherein the endothelial cell binding affinity of each of the functional features is greater than the endothelial cell binding affinity of the rest of the surface of the biocompatible material, and wherein the gap distance between adjacent functional features is between about 10 μm and about 75 μm.

16. The implantable, biocompatible material according to claim 9 , wherein each of the functional features comprises photochemically altered regions of the biocompatible material.

17. The implantable, biocompatible material according to claim 10 , wherein each of the photochemically altered regions comprises a titanium oxide.

18. The implantable, biocompatible material according to claim 9 , wherein the biocompatible material comprises nickel-titanium alloy.

19. The implantable, biocompatible material according to claim 9 , wherein each of the functional features is made of a material selected from the group consisting of carbon and nickel-titanium alloy.
