Abstract

This invention relates to a method for the preparation of lithium carbonate from lithium chloride containing brines. The method can include a silica removal step, capturing lithium chloride, recovering lithium chloride, supplying lithium chloride to an electrochemical cell and producing lithium hydroxide, contacting the lithium hydroxide with carbon dioxide to produce lithium carbonate.

Claims (11)

1. A method for the preparation of lithium carbonate from a brine solution containing lithium and silica, the method comprising the steps of:

supplying a brine solution containing lithium and silica to a silica management step to remove silica and to produce a silica-lean lithium containing solution;

supplying the silica-lean lithium containing solution to one or more lithium absorbents operable to capture the lithium from the silica-lean lithium containing solution;

recovering the lithium from the one or more lithium absorbents to produce a lithium-rich stream;

supplying the lithium-rich stream to an electrochemical cell to produce a lithium hydroxide-rich solution; and

contacting said lithium hydroxide-rich solution with carbon dioxide to produce lithium carbonate.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising concentrating the lithium-rich stream prior to supplying the lithium-rich stream to the electrochemical cell.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the brine solution containing lithium and silica is a geothermal brine.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the brine solution containing lithium and silica is a Salton Sea geothermal brine.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the one or more lithium absorbents comprise one or more intercalated lithium absorbents.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the one or more intercalated lithium absorbents are lithium aluminate intercalates.
