Abstract

Stability enhancement agents for use in a solidification matrices and solid detergent compositions are described. Stability enhancement is provided by a hydratable salt, water and phosphinosuccinic acid (PSO) derivative binding agents forming a dimensionally stable composition. Preferred phosphinosuccinic acid (PSO) derivatives include phosphinosuccinic acid and mono-, bis- and oligomeric phosphinosuccinic acid (PSO) derivatives. The stability enhancement composition for use in a solid detergent and solid detergent compositions are preferably biodegradable and substantially free of phosphate and NTA-free.

1. A solid detergent composition comprising:

a phosphinosuccinic acid derivative;

a surfactant;

a hydratable salt comprising sodium carbonate; and

water;

wherein the composition has less than about 2 wt-% phosphate, and

wherein the solid detergent provides a use solution having a pH between about 9 and 12.5.

2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the phosphinosuccinic acid derivative comprising phosphinosuccinic acid and mono-, bis- and oligomeric phosphinosuccinic acid adducts comprises at least 10 mol % of an adduct comprising a ratio of succinic acid to phosphorus from about 1:1 to 20:1.

3. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the phosphinosuccinic acid (I) and mono- (II), bis- (III) and oligomeric (IV) phosphinosuccinic acid adducts have the following formulas:

where M is selected from the group consisting of H + , Na + , K + , NH 4 + , and mixtures thereof, wherein m plus n is greater than 2.

4. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the surfactant comprises a nonionic surfactant.

5. The composition of claim 4 , wherein the nonionic surfactant comprises ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, or a combination of ethylene and propylene oxide.

6. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the solid detergent composition is dimensionally stable and has a growth exponent of less than 3% if heated at a temperature of 122° F.

7. The composition of claim 1 , wherein phosphinosuccinic acid derivative constitutes between about 0.1 wt-% and about 20 wt-% of the composition, and wherein the hydratable salt constitutes between about 40 wt-% and about 90 wt-% of the composition.

8. The composition of claim 1 , further comprising at least one functional ingredient selected from the group consisting of an alkalinity source, detergent builder, and combinations thereof, and wherein a use solution comprises from about 100-1500 ppm of an alkalinity source, and from about 5-500 ppm phosphinosuccinic acid derivative.

9. The composition of claim 1 wherein the composition is a cast, pressed, or extruded solid.

10. The composition of claim 1 wherein the solid detergent composition comprises between about 0.1 wt-% and about 20 wt-% a phosphinosuccinic acid derivative, between about 0.1 wt-% and about 50 wt-% water, between about 0.5 wt-% and about 10 wt-% surfactant, and between about 40 wt-% and about 90 wt-% hydratable salt, wherein the solid detergent composition has less than 1 wt-% phosphate, and wherein the solid detergent composition is dimensionally stable and has a growth exponent of less than 3% if heated at a temperature of 122° F.

11. The composition of claim 10 , wherein the phosphinosuccinic acid (I) and mono- (II), bis- (III) and oligomeric (IV) phosphinosuccinic acid adducts have the following formulas:

where M is selected from the group consisting of H + , Na + , K + , NH 4 + , and mixtures thereof, wherein m plus n is greater than 2.

12. The composition of claim 10 , wherein the phosphinosuccinic acid derivative comprises at least 10 mol % of an adduct comprising a ratio of succinic acid to phosphorus from about 1:1 to 20:1.

13. The composition of claim 1 , further comprising at least one functional ingredient selected from the group consisting of: chelating agents, sequestering agents, inorganic detergents, organic detergents, alkaline sources, water conditioners, rinse aids, hardening agents, bleaching agents, sanitizers, activators, detergent builders, fillers, defoaming agents, anti-redeposition agents, optical brighteners, dyes, odorants, stabilizing agents, dispersants, enzymes, corrosion inhibitors, thickeners and solubility modifiers.

14. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition is substantially phosphate-free and NTA-free.

15. The composition of claim 10 , wherein the solid detergent composition is dimensionally stable and has a growth exponent of less than 3% if heated at a temperature of 122 F.

16. A method of forming a solid detergent composition according to claim 1 , comprising:

combining the hydratable salt comprising sodium carbonate and the surfactant to form a powder pre-mix; and

mixing the powder pre-mix with a liquid pre-mix, the liquid pre-mix comprising the phosphinosuccinic acid derivative and water,
