Abstract

The present system includes a system, method and device for inferring connectivity between unconnected network segments. In operation, unconnected network segments are identified. Configuration data related to the unconnected network segments may be examined to facilitate inferring configuration data for an external network connected between the unconnected network segments. The inferred configuration data may be rendered, such as exported or visualized. The inferred configuration data may be related to a communication protocol and/or may be related to network bandwidth. The examined configuration data may be captured directly from one or more of the unconnected network segments and/or may be retrieved from a configuration data file, such as a network configuration model.

Claims (37)

1. A non-transitory computer-readable medium that includes a program that, when executed by a processor, causes the processor to:

receive configuration data associated with a network that includes at least a first network segment and a second network segment that are unconnected to each other,

determine a first interface at the first network segment and a second interface on the second network segment that indicate a connection to an external network, based on the configuration data,

create a model of the external network having connections to the first and second interfaces, wherein the model includes a routing protocol for the connections to the first and second interfaces based on the configuration data,

update a model of the network to include the model of the external network that connects the first and second network segments, and

provide information that facilitates rendering a visualization of at least a portion of the model of the network that includes the model of the external network.

2. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the program causes the processor to receive a user-specified change to at least one of the first and second interfaces, and to determine a response of the model to the user-specified change.

3. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the program causes the processor to determine the first and second interfaces based on autonomous system protocol information in the configuration data.

4. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the program causes the processor to determine the first and second interfaces based on border gateway protocol information in the configuration data.

5. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the program causes the processor to determine the first and second interfaces based on virtual routing and forwarding information in the configuration data.

6. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the program causes the processor to determine the first and second interfaces based on bandwidth information in the configuration data.

7. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the program causes the processor to determine at least one of the first and second interfaces based on receiving input from a user.

8. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the program causes the processor to infer operational characteristics associated with the external network based on the configuration data.

9. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the program causes the processor to infer a physical layer topology of the external network based on the configuration data.

10. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the program causes the processor to infer a network layer routing protocol employed in the external network based on the configuration data.

11. A non-transitory computer-readable medium that includes a program that, when executed by a processor, causes the processor to:

receive configuration data from a first device of a first segment of a network and a second device of a second segment of the network;

determine respective interfaces for the first and second devices to an at least one third party network based on the received configuration data;

create a computer-readable model that includes representations of the respective interfaces, a routing protocol for the respective interfaces, and a representation of the at least one third party network between the first and second devices;

store the computer-readable model in a memory device; and

output data for rendering a visualization of at least a portion of the computer-readable model.

12. The medium of claim 11 , wherein the program causes the processor to determine the respective interfaces based on at least one of: autonomous system protocol information, border gateway protocol information, virtual routing and forwarding information, and bandwidth information, in the configuration data.

13. The medium of claim 11 , wherein the program causes the processor to infer an operating speed of the at least one third party network.

14. The medium of claim 11 , wherein the program causes the processor to infer a physical layer topology of the at least one third party network.

15. The medium of claim 11 , wherein the program causes the processor to infer network layer routing protocols employed in the at least one third party network.

16. A system comprising:

a processor that is configured to:

receive configuration data associated with a network that includes at least a first network segment and a second network segment that are unconnected to each other,

determine a first interface at the first network segment and a second interface on the second network segment that indicate a connection to an external network, based on the configuration data,

create a model of the external network having connections to the first and second interfaces, wherein the model includes a routing protocol for the connections to the first and second interfaces based on the configuration data,

update a model of the network to include the model of the external network that connects the first and second network segments;

a memory that is configured to store the model of the network; and

a display that is configured to provide a visualization of at least a portion of the model of the network that includes the model of the external network.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the processor determines at least one of the first and second interfaces based on at least one of: autonomous system protocol information, border gateway protocol information, virtual routing and forwarding information, and bandwidth information, in the configuration data.

18. The system of claim 16 , wherein the processor is configured to infer operational characteristics associated with the external network based on the configuration data.

19. The system of claim 16 , wherein the processor is configured to infer a physical layer topology of the external network based on the configuration data.

20. The system of claim 16 , wherein the processor is configured to infer a network layer routing protocol employed in the external network based on the configuration data.
