Abstract

The invention provides improved medical devices, therapeutic treatment systems, and treatment methods for treatment of the lung. A lung volume reduction system includes an implantable device having an elongate body that is sized and shaped for delivery via the airway system to a lung airway of a patient. The implant is inserted and positioned while the implant is in a delivery configuration, and is reconfigured to a deployed configuration so as to locally compress adjacent tissue of the lung, with portions of the elongate body generally moving laterally within the airway so as to laterally compress lung tissue. A plurality of such implants will often be used to treat a lung of a patient.

Claims (27)

1. A method of treating a patient having a lung with an airway, the method comprising:

deploying a lung implant to the airway of the lung;

viewing a deployment position of the deployed lung implant;

adjusting the deployment position of the deployed lung implant to an adjusted position, and wherein the adjusted position of the deployed lung implant bends an axis of the airway of the lung so as to locally compress lung tissue.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the deployment position of the deployed lung implant comprises:

coupling a distal end of a recapture device to a proximal end of the deployed lung implant;

withdrawing at least the proximal end of the deployed lung implant into a catheter; and

straightening at least a portion of the deployed lung implant.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the distal end of the recapture device comprises forceps for coupling with the proximal end of the deployed lung implant.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the distal end of the recapture device comprises a balloon with an inflation port, and wherein coupling the distal end of the recapture device to the proximal end of the deployed implant comprises positioning the balloon about the proximal end of the deployed implant, inflating the balloon by pumping a fluid into the balloon via the inflation port and wherein the inflated balloon couples with the proximal end of the deployed implant.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the deployed lung implant is straightened as the proximal end of the deployed lung implant is withdrawn into the catheter.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the deployment position of the deployed lung implant is viewed from a bronchoscope.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the lung implant is deployed to the airway of the lung through a working channel of the bronchoscope.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the deployment position of the deployed lung implant is viewed by fluoroscopy.

9. A method of treating a patient having a lung with an airway, the method comprising:

deploying a lung implant to the airway of the lung, the deployed lung implant bending the airway of the lung so as to locally compress lung tissue while allowing fluid or air to pass either way through the airway past the deployed lung implant;

viewing a deployment position of the deployed lung implant;

removing the deployed lung implant from the lung.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein removing the deployed lung implant from the lung comprises:

coupling a distal end of a recapture device to a proximal end of the deployed lung implant;

withdrawing the deployed lung implant into a catheter by pulling the proximal end into the catheter with the recapture device so that the catheter straightens the deployed lung implant.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the distal end of the recapture device comprises forceps for coupling with the proximal end of the deployed lung implant.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the distal end of the recapture device comprises a balloon with an inflation port, and wherein coupling the distal end of the recapture device to the proximal end of the deployed implant comprises positioning the balloon about the proximal end of the deployed implant, inflating the balloon by pumping a fluid into the balloon via the inflation port and wherein the inflated balloon couples with the proximal end of the deployed implant.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the deployed lung implant is straightened as the deployed lung implant is withdrawn into the catheter.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the deployment position of the deployed lung implant is viewed from a bronchoscope.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the lung implant is withdrawn from the airway of the lung through a working channel of the bronchoscope.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein the deployment position of the deployed lung implant is viewed by fluoroscopy.
