Abstract

There is provided a method of treating produce comprising the step of exposing said produce to an atmosphere containing (i) 100 ppb to 5,000 ppb by volume of one or more cyclopropene compound, and (ii) ethylene, wherein the ratio of ethylene concentration by volume to cyclopropene concentration by volume is from 0.1:1 to 8:1.

Claims (43)

2 . A method of treating produce comprising:

exposing said produce to an atmosphere containing

(i) 100 ppb to 5,000 ppb by volume of one or more cyclopropene compound, and

(ii) exogenous ethylene, wherein the ratio of exogenous ethylene concentration by volume to cyclopropene concentration by volume is from 0.1:1 to 8:1; and

subsequent to said exposing, storing said produce for 2 weeks or longer at temperature of −1.5° C. to 4° C.

wherein said produce comprises produce that is over-reactive to cyclopropene,

wherein said exposing is conducted at temperature of −1.5° C. to 25° C.,

wherein said produce comprises an edible harvested crop,

wherein said treating takes place after said produce is harvested, and wherein the time that elapses after harvest before said treating is 8 days or less, and

wherein said ethylene is introduced into said atmosphere by injection as a gas from an external container.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein said exposing is conducted at temperature of −1.5° C. to 4° C.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein said exposing is conducted at temperature of 15° C. to 25° C.

7 . The method of claim 2 , wherein said produce comprises one or more pear, one or more papaya, one or more avocado, or a mixture thereof.

8 . The method of claim 2 , wherein said produce comprises one or more pear.

9 . The method of claim 2 , wherein said treating takes place after said produce is harvested, and wherein the time that elapses after harvest before said treating is 7 days or less.

10 . The method of claim 2 , wherein said treating takes place after said produce is harvested, and wherein the time that elapses after harvest before said treating is 5 days or less.

11 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the concentration of said cyclopropene in said atmosphere is 250 to 1,000 ppb.

12 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the ratio of the concentration of said ethylene in said atmosphere to the concentration of said cyclopropene in said atmosphere is from 0.2:1 to 4:1.

13 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the period of time over which said produce is exposed to atmosphere containing cyclopropene is 4 hours to 36 hours.

14 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the period of time over which said produce is exposed to atmosphere containing ethylene is 4 hours to 36 hours.

The method of claim 14 , wherein the extent of said period of time over which said produce is exposed to said atmosphere containing ethylene during which said atmosphere containing ethylene also contains cyclopropene is 50% or more, based on said period of time over which said produce is exposed to said atmosphere containing ethylene.

16 . A method of treating produce comprising:

exposing said produce to an atmosphere containing

(i) 100 ppb to 5,000 ppb by volume of one or more cyclopropene compound, and

(ii) exogenous ethylene, wherein the ratio of exogenous ethylene concentration by volume to cyclopropene concentration by volume is from 0.1:1 to 8:1; and

subsequent to said exposing, storing said produce for 2 weeks or longer at temperature of −1.5° C. to 4° C.;

wherein said produce comprises produce that is over-reactive to cyclopropene,

wherein said exposing is conducted at temperature of −1.5° C. to 25° C.,

wherein said produce comprises an edible harvested crop,

wherein said treating takes place after said produce is harvested, and wherein the time that elapses after harvest before said treating is 8 days or less, and

wherein said ethylene is introduced into said atmosphere by placing a sealed vial containing the ethylene into the atmosphere and then unsealing the sealed container.

17 . A method of treating produce comprising:

exposing said produce to an atmosphere containing

(i) 100 ppb to 5,000 ppb by volume of one or more cyclopropene compound, and

(ii) exogenous ethylene, wherein the ratio of exogenous ethylene concentration by volume to cyclopropene concentration by volume is from 0.1:1 to 8:1; and

subsequent to said exposing, storing said produce for 2 weeks or longer at temperature of −1.5° C. to 4° C.;

wherein said produce comprises produce that is over-reactive to cyclopropene,

wherein said exposing is conducted at temperature of −1.5° C. to 25° C.,

wherein said produce comprises an edible harvested crop,

wherein said treating takes place after said produce is harvested, and wherein the time that elapses after harvest before said treating is 8 days or less, and

wherein said ethylene is introduced into said atmosphere by producing said ethylene by a catalytic reaction in an airtight container containing said atmosphere.
