Abstract

The present disclosure discloses a method and network device for providing tiered network access based on user actions. Specifically, a network device can identify a social action performed by a user, where the social action is performed while the user is logged into a social network application. Furthermore, the network device can select a network access level of a plurality of network access levels based on the social action. Accordingly, the network device grants a client device corresponding to the user access to a network based on the selected network access level. Note that the network access level is selected from the plurality of network access levels based on a plurality of social actions performed by the user.

Claims (25)

1. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions which, when executed by a processor, causes performance of operations comprising:

displaying a captive portal website including a link to a social network application on a client device;

requesting performance of one specific social action on the social network application to authenticate the client device to a wireless local area network (WLAN);

identifying, using an Application Programmable Interface (API), the one specific social action performed on the client device by a user while the user is logged into the social network application;

based at least on the identified one specific social action, selecting a WLAN access level among a plurality of WLAN access levels, wherein each WLAN access level corresponds to a different data transmission quality or quantity;

authenticating the client device to the WLAN, which involves granting the client device access to the WLAN with the different data transmission quality or quantity corresponding to the selected WLAN access level.

2. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the social action comprises subscribing to an entity in the social network application.

3. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the network access level is selected subsequent to the user obtaining access to the network.

4. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the network comprises resources on the World Wide Web or resources on a Local Area Network.

5. The medium of claim 1 , wherein granting the client device access to the network based on the selected network access level comprises modifying a current non-zero network access level to the selected network access level.

6. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the network access level is selected form the plurality of network access levels based on a plurality of social action performed by the user.

7. The medium of claim 6 , wherein each of the plurality of social action are performed on a respective social network application of a plurality of social network applications.

8. The medium of claim 6 , wherein each of the plurality of social actions are performed on the same social network application.

9. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise:

prior to identifying the social action performed by the user, prompting the user to perform the social action.

10. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise:

prior to identifying the social action performed by the user, prompting the user to perform the social action for obtaining said network access level of the plurality of network access levels.

11. The medium of claim 1 , wherein identifying the social action comprises using an API associated with the social network application.

12. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the different data transmission quality or quantity comprises allowed access to different network resources.

13. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the different data transmission quality or quantity comprises different levels of non-zero bandwidth.

14. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the different data transmission quality or quantity comprises different levels of non-zero data allowance.

15. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the different data transmission quality or quantity comprises different levels of non-zero data allowance.

16. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the different data transmission quality or quantity comprises different levels of non-zero data download speeds.

17. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the different data transmission quality or quantity comprises different levels of non-zero data upload speeds.

18. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the different data transmission quality or quantity comprises obtaining access to network resources using different protocols.
