Abstract

An apparatus for cone beam computed tomography of an extremity has a digital radiation detector and a first device to move the detector along a circular detector path extending so that the detector moves both at least partially around a first extremity of the patient and between the first extremity and a second, adjacent extremity. The detector path has radius R 1 sufficient to position the extremity approximately centered in the detector path. There is a radiation source with a second device to move the source along a concentric circular source path having a radius R 2 greater than radius R 1 , radius R 2 sufficiently long to allow adequate radiation exposure of the first extremity for an image capture by the detector. A first circumferential gap in the source path allows the second extremity to be positioned in the first circumferential gap during image capture.

Claims (12)

1. A method for cone beam computed tomography, the method comprising:

moving a digital radiation detector along a detector path, the detector path configured so that the digital radiation detector travels between the legs of a human patient who is standing and straddling the detector path while the detector captures a sequence of radiographic images of one of the legs of the patient;

moving a radiation source along a source path that is further from said one of the legs of the patient than the detector path, the source path configured to allow radiation exposure of said one of the legs of the patient such that the detector captures the sequence of radiographic images of said one of the legs of the patient,

wherein the steps of moving the detector and moving the radiation source are synchronized to keep the detector and the radiation source in diametrically opposing positions relative to said one of the legs of the patient.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein any point of the source path is further from said one of the legs of the patient than any point of the detector path.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein a distance from said one of the legs of the patient to the detector is less than 40 cm.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising attaching the detector and the radiation source to a rotating member for performing the steps of moving the detector and the radiation source.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising at least a portion of the rotating member traveling between the legs of the patient during the steps of moving the radiation source and moving the detector.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising attaching the radiation source to the rotating member using an arm that extends the radiation source further from said leg of the patient than the rotating member.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the rotating member comprises a substantially horizontal rotational plane, and wherein the method further comprises positioning the rotating member substantially perpendicular to an axis of said one of the legs of the patient while the detector captures the sequence of radiographic images.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising adjusting the rotational plane of the rotating member away from substantially horizontal.

9. The method of claim 4 , further comprising moving the rotating member vertically in a direction parallel to a rotational axis of the rotating member.
