Abstract

A user can specify particular news weather, traffic, or other perishable content received on a particular Internet radio station or other media channel. The user can customize the station so that wherever the user is currently located, he can receive perishable content related to a preferred geographic location or other category. In some embodiments, a user can specify that a customized station plays local news from one city at the top of the hour, traffic from another city at 10 minutes past the hour, and music or other content at other times. The user can also customize the station to select the perishable content, or other original content, from the personal libraries of specified users. Thus, a user can customize not only the genre of content or select a particular local station, but can also modify the perishable content provided by the customized station.

Claims (52)

1. A method of providing a personal media library (PML)-based playlist, the method comprising:

receiving, via an electronic communications network, a preference associated with a listener, the preference indicating a first media preference;

scanning the listener's PML to select media elements included in the listener's PML according to the preference, wherein the listener's PML includes a plurality of media elements organized by a content management application, by executing at least one program instruction;

creating the PML playlist including representations of at least two of the media elements selected as a result of the scanning the listener's PML, by executing at least one program instruction;

synchronizing the PML playlist with a content distribution system configured to publish perishable media content for insertion into the PML playlist; and

providing the PML playlist, including the perishable media content, to the listener via the electronic communications network.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein synchronizing includes reporting played-content history back to the content distribution system.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein perishable content and categorization information are obtained from a publishing server.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the preference associated with the listener includes at least one of: a preference for perishable content from a particular geographic location and a preference for a perishable content source.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

obtaining a perishable content theme describing a type of perishable content and a frequency at which the type of perishable content is to be played.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a listener preference for user-generated content including at least one of: DJ-like chatter, a news flash from an organization, a music mashup, a public service announcement and an emergency alert; and

incorporating user-generated content into the playlist according to the listener preference for user-generated content.

7. A computer comprising:

a processor;

memory coupled to the processor; and

the processor configured to:

receive a preference associated with a listener's personal media library (PML), the preference indicating a first media preference;

scan the listener's PML to select media elements included in the listener's PML according to the preference, wherein the listener's PML includes a plurality of media elements organized by a content management application;

create a playlist including representations of at least two of the media elements selected as a result of the scan of the listener's PML;

synchronize the playlist with a content distribution system configured to provide perishable media content for insertion into the playlist; and

provide the playlist, including the perishable media content, to the listener.

8. The computer of claim 7 , wherein synchronize the playlist includes interacting with the content distribution system to update perishable media content.

9. The computer of claim 7 , wherein the first media preference includes a listener preference for a perishable content theme.

10. The computer of claim 9 , wherein the listener preference for perishable content specifies at least one of a geographic location, and a content source.

11. The computer of claim 7 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

receive a listener preference for a first media genre, wherein the preference for a first media genre includes an indication of at least one of a media style and a media artist; and

create the playlist based, at least in part, on the preference for a first media genre.

12. The computer of claim 7 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

receive a listener preference for user-generated content including at least one of: DJ-like chatter, a news flash from an organization, a music mashup, a public service announcement and an emergency alert; and

incorporate user-generated content into the playlist according to the listener preference for user-generated content.

13. The computer of claim 7 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

receive a listener preference for commercials; and

incorporate commercials into the playlist according to the listener preference for commercials.

14. A non-transitory computer readable medium tangibly embodying a program of instructions to be executed by a processor, the program of instructions comprising:

at least one instruction to receive a preference associated with a listener, the preference indicating a first media preference;

at least one instruction to scan a listener's personal media library (PML) to select media elements included in the listener's PML according to the preference, wherein the listener's PML includes a plurality of media elements organized by a content management application;

at least one instruction to create a playlist including representations of at least two of the media elements selected as a result of the scan of the listener's PML;

at least one instruction to synchronize the playlist with a content distribution system via a communications network; and

at least one instruction to provide the playlist to the listener.

15. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 14 , wherein a level of synchronization performed is dependent on at least one of a speed and quality of the communications network.

16. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the first media preference includes a listener preference for perishable content including at least one of a news report, sports report, weather report and traffic report.

17. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the preference associated with the listener includes a perishable content theme.

18. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the program of instructions further comprises:

at least one instruction to receive a listener preference for a first media genre; and

at least one instruction to scan the listener's PML to identify media items corresponding to the listener preference for a first media genre.

19. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the program of instructions further comprises:

at least one instruction to receive a listener preference for user-generated content from another user to be incorporated into the playlist.

20. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the program of instructions further comprises:

at least one instruction to receive a listener preference for commercials; and

at least one instruction to incorporate commercials into the playlist according to the listener preference for commercials.
