Abstract

A multiple-band antenna having first and second operating frequency bands is provided. The antenna includes a first patch structure associated primarily with the first operating frequency band, a second patch structure electrically coupled to the first patch structure and associated primarily with the second operating frequency band, a first slot structure disposed between a first portion of the first patch structure and the second patch structure and associated primarily with the first operating frequency band, and a second slot structure disposed between a second portion of the first patch structure and the second patch structure and associated primarily with the second operating frequency band. A mounting structure for the multiple-band antenna is also provided. The mounting structure includes a first surface and a second surface opposite to and overlapping the first surface.

Claims (30)

1. An antenna assembly comprising:

a rigid dielectric support structure having a smooth mounting surface and at least one mounting pin extending outwardly therefrom; and

an electrically conductive layer on the smooth mounting surface defining an antenna and comprising a first patch comprising spaced apart first and second end portions with an adjoining portion therebetween to define a C-shape, and a second patch electrically coupled to said first patch at the adjoining portion to define a first slot between said first end portion of said first patch and said second patch, and a second slot between said second end portion of said first patch and said second patch.

2. The antenna assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one of said first and second slots has a triangular shape.

3. The antenna assembly of claim 2 , wherein the triangular shape has a base adjacent said adjoining portion of said first patch.

4. The antenna assembly of claim 1 , wherein the smooth mounting surface has a non-planar shape.

5. The antenna assembly of claim 4 , wherein the non-planar shape is an arcuate shape.

6. The antenna assembly of claim 1 , wherein dimensions of said first patch and said first slot primarily determine a first operating frequency band, gain of the antenna in the first operating frequency band, and impedance of the antenna in the first operating frequency band; and wherein dimensions of said second patch and said second slot primarily determine a second operating frequency band, gain of the antenna in the second operating frequency band, and impedance of the antenna in the second operating frequency band.

7. The antenna assembly of claim 6 , wherein said first operating frequency band comprises a transmit sub-band of 880-915 MHz and a receive sub-band of 925-960 MHz; and wherein said second frequency band comprises a transmit sub-band of 1850-1910 MHz and a receive sub-band of 1930-1990 MHz.

8. The antenna assembly of claim 1 , wherein said antenna further comprises: a feed point coupled to the second end portion of said first patch; and a ground point coupled to said second patch.

9. The antenna assembly of claim 1 , wherein said antenna further comprises: a tuning tab coupled to the second end portion of said first patch; a pair of tuning tabs coupled to the first end portion of said first patch; and a tuning slot between the pair of tuning tabs.

10. A wireless mobile communication device comprising:

a housing;

at least one wireless transceiver carried by said housing; and

an antenna assembly carried by said housing and comprising a rigid dielectric support structure having a smooth mounting surface and at least one mounting pin extending outwardly therefrom to engage at least one adjacent portion of said housing, and an electrically conductive layer on the smooth mounting surface defining an antenna coupled to said at least one wireless transceiver and comprising a first patch comprising spaced apart first and second end portions with an adjoining portion therebetween to define a C-shape, and a second patch electrically coupled to said first patch at the adjoining portion to define a first slot between said first end portion of said first patch and said second patch, and a second slot between said second end portion of said first patch and said second patch.

11. The wireless mobile communication device of claim 10 , wherein at least one of said first and second slots has a triangular shape.

12. The wireless mobile communication device of claim 11 , wherein the triangular shape has a base adjacent said adjoining portion of said first patch.

13. The wireless mobile communication device of claim 10 , wherein the smooth mounting surface has an arcuate shape.

14. The wireless mobile communication device of claim 10 , wherein dimensions of said first patch and said first slot primarily determine a first operating frequency band, gain of the antenna in the first operating frequency band, and impedance of the antenna in the first operating frequency band; and wherein dimensions of said second patch and said second slot primarily determine a second operating frequency band, gain of the antenna in the second operating frequency band, and impedance of the antenna in the second operating frequency band.

15. The wireless mobile communication device of claim 14 , wherein said first operating frequency band comprises a transmit sub-band of 880-915 MHz and a receive sub-band of 925-960 MHz; and wherein said second frequency band comprises a transmit sub-band of 1850-1910 MHz and a receive sub-band of 1930-1990 MHz.

16. The wireless mobile communication device of claim 10 , wherein said antenna further comprises: a feed point coupled to the second end portion of said first patch; and a ground point coupled to said second patch.

17. The wireless mobile communication device of claim 10 , wherein said antenna assembly is mounted in said housing adjacent top and rear surfaces thereof.

18. A method for making an antenna assembly comprising:

forming a rigid dielectric support structure having a smooth mounting surface and at least one mounting pin extending outwardly therefrom; and

positioning an electrically conductive layer on the smooth mounting surface defining an antenna comprising a first patch comprising spaced apart first and second end portions with an adjoining portion therebetween to define a C-shape, and a second patch electrically coupled to said first patch at the adjoining portion to define a first slot between said first end portion of said first patch and said second patch, and a second slot between said second end portion of said first patch and said second patch.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein at least one of the first and second slots has a triangular shape.
