Abstract

A user equipment (UE) performs a transform domain (DFT) based method to detect the cyclic prefix (CP) length that is being used by a base station for cellular communications. The detected CP length is then used to reduce the amount of time required to complete the synchronization and cell search procedures. In particular, the UE uses the detected CP length information to obtain Cell Identification parameters (NID1, NID2) along with information including a Maximum energy Tap location and a reference signal receive power (RSRP) while completing the synchronization and cell search procedures.

Claims (56)

1. A receiver configured to order a plurality of possible cyclic prefix (CP) lengths of data received from a base station, the receiver comprising:

a deciphering module configured to determine first spectral components for the data associated with a first CP length and second spectral components for the data associated with an extended CP length that is longer than the first CP length;

a calculator configured to calculate a first metric for the first spectral components and a second metric for the second spectral components; and

an ordering module configured to order the first CP length and the extended CP length based on the first metric and the second metric.

2. The receiver of claim 1 , further comprising:

a converter configured to convert the data to the frequency domain.

3. The receiver of claim 1 , further comprising:

a correlation module configured to generate correlation data using the data.

4. The receiver of claim 1 , wherein the ordering module is further configured to:

compare the first metric and the second metric with a threshold value.

5. The receiver of claim 4 , wherein the ordering module is further configured to:

order the first CP length before the extended CP length if the first metric is above the threshold value and the second metric is not above the threshold value; and

order the extended CP length before the first CP length if the second metric is above the threshold value and the first metric is not above the threshold value.

6. The receiver of claim 4 , wherein the ordering module is further configured to:

determine whether a ratio of the first metric and the second metric is above the threshold value;

order the extended CP length before the first CP length if the ratio of the first metric and the second metric is above the threshold value; and

order the first CP length before the extended CP length if the ratio of the first metric and the second metric is not above the threshold value.

7. The receiver of claim 1 , further comprising:

a timing comparator configured to determine whether a time associated with a channel over which the data is received is within a predetermined time duration.

8. The receiver of claim 1 , further comprising:

a peak-to-average ratio comparator configured to determine whether a peak-to-average ratio associated with a channel over which the data is received is greater than a threshold value.

9. A method, comprising:

receiving, using a receiver, data from a base station, wherein a symbol of the data includes a cyclic prefix (CP) having a CP length;

generating correlation data using the data;

determining, using the correlation data, first spectral components for the correlation data associated with a first CP length and second spectral components for the correlation data associated with an extended CP length that is longer than the first CP length;

calculating a first metric for the first spectral components and a second metric for the second spectral components; and

ordering a plurality of possible CP lengths for the symbol based on the first metric and the second metric, wherein the plurality of possible CP lengths includes the first CP length and the extended CP length.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

determining the CP length based on the ordered plurality of possible CP lengths, wherein the CP length is associated with the base station.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein ordering the plurality of possible CP lengths further comprises:

comparing the first metric and the second metric with a threshold value.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein ordering the plurality of possible CP lengths further comprises:

ordering the first CP length before the extended CP length in the plurality of possible CP lengths if the first metric is above the threshold value and the second metric is not above the threshold value; and

ordering the extended CP length before the first CP length in the plurality of possible CP lengths if the second metric is above the threshold value and the first metric is not above the threshold value.
