Abstract

An apparatus and method for penetrating the bone marrow is provided. The apparatus includes a housing, a penetrator assembly, operable to penetrate the bone marrow, a connector operable to releasably attach the penetrator assembly to a drill shaft, the drill shaft operable to connect the penetrator assembly to a gear assembly, a gear assembly operable to engage and rotate the drill shaft, a motor operable to engage the reduction gear assembly and drive the penetrator into the bone marrow by rotation of the drill shaft, and a power supply and associated circuitry operable to power the motor. The apparatus and method may be adapted to insert a probe through the skull and into the brain.

Claims (47)

1. A kit for injecting a unit dose of medication into the bone marrow comprising:

a housing;

a needle assembly, including an IO needle and a trocar, operable to penetrate the bone and associated bone marrow;

the IO needle and trocar having respective cutting tips aligned for single cutting action;

a drill shaft rotatably disposed within the housing;

a holding mechanism operable to releasably attach the needle assembly to the drill shaft;

the drill shaft operable to connect the needle assembly to a reduction gear assembly disposed within the housing;

the reduction gear assembly operable to rotate the drill shaft;

a motor disposed within the housing;

the motor operable to engage the reduction gear assembly and drive the needle assembly into the bone and associated bone marrow by rotation of the drill shaft;

a battery power supply and associated circuitry disposed within the housing to power the motor;

a strap operable to stabilize the IO needle after the IO needle has been seated in a bone;

needle assemblies in varying sizes; and

unit doses of medications for emergency treatment of patients.

2. The kit of claim 1 wherein the medications comprise epinephrine, bicarbonate, and digoxin.

3. The kit of claim 1 wherein the IO needle comprises a luer lock connector.

4. The kit of claim 3 wherein the cutting tip of the IO needle includes at least one planar surface, and a cutting tip of the trocar includes at least one planar surface that is aligned with the at least one planar surface of cutting tip of the IO needle.

5. The kit of claim 4 wherein the cutting tip of the IO needle includes a plurality of planar surfaces, and the cutting tip of the trocar includes a plurality of planar surfaces each of which is aligned with one of the plurality of planar surfaces of the cutting tip of the IO needle.

6. The kit of claim 1 further comprising:

a trigger configured to be depressed to activate the motor.

7. The kit of claim 1 further comprising:

intravenous (IV) tubing configured to be coupled to the IO needle.

8. The kit of claim 1 further comprising:

a zippered container within which the unit doses of medications are contained.

9. A kit for injecting a unit dose of medication into the bone marrow comprising:

a housing;

a needle assembly, including an IO needle and a trocar, operable to penetrate the bone and associated bone marrow;

the IO needle and trocar having respective cutting tips aligned for single cutting action;

a drill shaft rotatably configured to be releasably coupled to the needle assembly;

the drill shaft operable to connect the needle assembly to a reduction gear assembly disposed within the housing;

the reduction gear assembly operable to rotate the drill shaft;

a motor disposed within the housing;

the motor operable to engage the reduction gear assembly and drive the needle assembly into the bone and associated bone marrow by rotation of the drill shaft;

a battery power supply and associated circuitry disposed within the housing to power the motor;

a stabilizer operable to stabilize the IO needle after the IO needle has been seated in a bone;

needle assemblies in varying sizes; and

unit doses of medications for emergency treatment of patients.

10. The kit of claim 9 wherein the medications comprise epinephrine, bicarbonate, and digoxin.

11. The kit of claim 9 wherein the IO needle comprises a luer lock connector.

12. The kit of claim 11 wherein the cutting tip of the IO needle includes at least one planar surface, and a cutting tip of the trocar includes at least one planar surface that is aligned with the at least one planar surface of cutting tip of the IO needle.

13. The kit of claim 12 wherein the cutting tip of the IO needle includes a plurality of planar surfaces, and the cutting tip of the trocar includes a plurality of planar surfaces each of which is aligned with one of the plurality of planar surfaces of the cutting tip of the IO needle.

14. The kit of claim 9 further comprising:

a trigger configured to be depressed to activate the motor.

15. The kit of claim 9 further comprising:

intravenous (IV) tubing configured to be coupled to the IO needle.

16. The kit of claim 9 further comprising:

a zippered container within which the unit doses of medications are contained.
