Abstract

An antifoam device and a method of using the antifoam device are useful to control levels of foam generated on the surface of effluent seawater during aeration of the effluent seawater in a seawater aeration basin. Effluent seawater contained within the seawater aeration basin may be produced in a seawater flue gas desulfurization system associated with a power plant or an aluminum production plant.

Claims (34)

1 . A foam control system comprising:

a seawater aeration basin fluidly connected to a high pressure side of a fan operable to blow an oxygen containing gas into effluent seawater in the seawater aeration basin; and

a low pressure side of a fan operable to suction foam from a surface of effluent seawater in the seawater aeration basin into an antifoam device comprising:

a housing equipped with an inlet and an outlet;

a spray system operable to spray fluid within the housing toward at least one perforated plate arranged across an interior area of the housing dividing the interior area into an inlet area and an outlet area;

a mist eliminator arranged in fluid communication with the outlet; and

a drain duct in fluid communication with a bottom of the interior area operational for draining fluid from the antifoam device.

2 . The system according to claim 1 , wherein foam from the surface of the effluent seawater is suctioned into the interior area of the housing using the low pressure side of a separate second fan.

3 . The system according to claim 1 , wherein foam from the surface of the effluent seawater is suctioned into the interior area of the housing and destroyed by fluid sprayed by the spray system toward the at least one perforated plate.

4 . The system according to claim 1 , wherein suction of foam is conducted on a continuous, scheduled periodic, detector initiated “as-needed” periodic or other non-continuous basis.

5 . An antifoam device comprising:

a housing equipped with an inlet and an outlet;

a spray system operable to spray a fluid within the housing toward at least one perforated plate arranged across an interior area of the housing dividing the interior area into an inlet area and an outlet area;

a mist eliminator arranged in fluid communication with the outlet; and

a drain duct in fluid communication with a bottom of the interior area operational for draining a fluid from the interior area.

6 . The device according to claim 5 , wherein foam from a surface of effluent seawater in a seawater aeration basin is suctioned into the interior area of the housing using the aeration fan or a separate second fan.

The device according to claim 5 , wherein foam from a surface of effluent seawater in a seawater aeration basin is suctioned into the interior area of the housing and is destroyed by contact by a fluid spray from the spray system directed toward the at least one perforated plate blocking foam flow.

8 . The device according to claim 5 , wherein foam is suctioned into the housing on a continuous, scheduled periodic, detector initiated “as-needed” periodic or other non-continuous basis.

9 . A method for foam control comprising:

providing a seawater aeration basin fluidly connected to a high pressure side of a fan operable to blow an oxygen containing gas into effluent seawater contained in the seawater aeration basin;

providing a low pressure side of a fan operable to suction foam from a surface of the effluent seawater in the seawater aeration basin into an antifoam device; and

destroying foam in an interior area of the antifoam device comprising:

a housing defining the interior area and equipped with an inlet for suctioned foam and an outlet for air;

a spray system operable to spray a fluid within the housing toward at least one perforated plate arranged across the interior area of the housing dividing the interior area into an inlet area and an outlet area;

a mist eliminator arranged in fluid communication with the outlet; and

a drain duct in fluid communication with a bottom of the interior area operational for draining a fluid from the antifoam device.

10 . The method according to claim 9 , wherein the foam is destroyed in the interior area by contact with a fluid spray from the spray system directed toward the at least one perforated plate blocking foam flow.

11 . The method according to claim 9 , wherein the suctioned foam comprises heavy metals and fluid produced from destroyed foam comprises heavy metals.

12 . The method according to claim 9 , wherein suction of foam is conducted on a continuous, scheduled periodic, detector initiated “as-needed” periodic or other non-continuous basis.

13 . A method of using an antifoam device comprising:

suctioning foam from a surface of effluent seawater in a seawater aeration basin into the antifoam device; and

destroying the suctioned foam in an interior area of the antifoam device by contact by a fluid spray within the interior area directed toward at least one perforated plate arranged across the interior area blocking foam flow.

14 . The method according to claim 13 , wherein the suctioned foam comprises heavy metals, and fluid produced from the destroyed foam comprises heavy metals.

15 . The method according to claim 13 , wherein suction of foam is conducted on a continuous, scheduled periodic, detector initiated “as-needed” periodic or other non-continuous basis.
