Abstract

A method for controllably linking propulsion units in a vehicle consist includes transmitting a linking signal having an identity of a lead propulsion unit. A remote propulsion unit is remotely controlled by the lead unit when the identity matches a designated identity stored onboard the remote unit. A de-linking signal is transmitted from the lead unit when the lead unit is to be decoupled from the vehicle consist. The de-linking signal includes a replacement identity of a replacement propulsion unit. A replacement linking signal is transmitted from a second lead unit. The remote propulsion unit allows the second lead propulsion unit to remotely control the operations of the remote propulsion unit when replacement identity stored onboard the remote propulsion unit matches an identity that is communicated in the replacement linking signal.

Claims (27)

1. A system comprising:

one or more processors configured to receive a linking signal from a first propulsion unit of a vehicle consist that also includes a second propulsion unit, the linking signal identifying the first propulsion unit, the one or more processors configured to allow the first propulsion unit to remotely control operations of the second propulsion unit responsive to the linking signal identifying the first propulsion unit,

wherein the one or more processors also are configured to receive a de-linking signal from the first propulsion unit, the de-linking signal including a replacement identity of another propulsion unit other than the first propulsion unit,

wherein, responsive to the one or more processors receiving a replacement linking signal from the third propulsion unit, the one or more processors are configured to allow the third propulsion unit to remotely control the operations of the second propulsion unit responsive to the replacement identity representing the third propulsion unit.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to prevent the third propulsion unit from remotely controlling the operations of the remote propulsion unit responsive to the replacement identity not representing the third propulsion unit.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to confirm that the third propulsion unit is permitted to control the operations of the second propulsion unit by comparing a stored identity that is stored onboard the second propulsion unit with the replacement identity.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to communicate a confirmation signal to the third propulsion unit responsive to the replacement identity representing the third propulsion unit.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to receive one or more of the linking signal, the de-linking signal, or the replacement linking signal via one or more wireless connections between the second propulsion unit and one or more of the first propulsion unit or the third propulsion unit.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to receive one or more of the linking signal, the de-linking signal, or the replacement linking signal via one or more wired connections between the second propulsion unit and one or more of the first propulsion unit or the third propulsion unit.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to store the replacement identity in a memory disposed onboard the second propulsion unit.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to control the operations of the second propulsion unit in a distributed power system responsive to the replacement identity representing the third propulsion unit.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to be disposed onboard the second propulsion unit.

10. A system comprising:

one or more processors configured to receive a linking signal from a first propulsion unit of a vehicle consist that also includes a second propulsion unit, the linking signal including a first identity of the first propulsion unit, the one or more processors also configured to receive a de-linking signal from the first propulsion unit, the de-linking signal representing a replacement identity of a third propulsion unit other than the first propulsion unit and the second propulsion unit,

wherein the one or more processors are configured to permit one or more of the first propulsion unit or the third propulsion unit to control operations of the second propulsion unit based on the first identity or the replacement identity that is received by the one or more processors, the one or more processors also configured to prevent a propulsion unit other than the first propulsion unit and the second propulsion unit from controlling the operations of the second propulsion unit based on an identity of the propulsion unit not being the first identity or the replacement identity.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to compare the replacement identity to a stored identity prior to allowing the third propulsion unit to control the operations of the second propulsion unit.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to store the replacement identity in a memory disposed onboard the second propulsion unit.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to controllably link the second propulsion unit with the third propulsion unit in a distributed power system responsive to the replacement identity representing the third propulsion unit.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to determine that the first propulsion unit is to be mechanically decoupled from the second propulsion unit responsive to receiving the de-linking signal.

15. A system comprising:

one or more processors configured to be disposed onboard a distributed power (DP) controlled vehicle consist that includes a first lead propulsion unit and a remote propulsion unit, the one or more processors configured to permit the first lead propulsion unit to control operations of the remote propulsion unit and prevent one or more other propulsion units from controlling the operations of the remote propulsion unit,

wherein the one or more processors also are configured to, responsive to receiving a de-linking signal from the first lead propulsion unit, permit a second lead propulsion unit of the one or more other propulsion units to control the operations of the remote propulsion unit.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to prevent the one or more other propulsion units other than the second lead propulsion unit from controlling the operations of the remote propulsion unit responsive to receiving the de-linking signal.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to prevent the first lead propulsion unit from controlling the operations of the remote propulsion unit responsive to receiving the de-linking signal.

18. The system of claim 15 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to determine an identity of the second lead propulsion unit from the de-linking signal.

19. The system of claim 15 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to be disposed onboard the remote propulsion unit.

20. The system of claim 15 , wherein, prior to receiving a linking signal that identifies the first lead propulsion unit, the one or more processors are configured to prevent the first lead propulsion unit from controlling the operations of the remote propulsion unit.
