Abstract

A patient monitor has multiple sensors adapted to attach to tissue sites of a living subject. The sensors generate sensor signals that are responsive to at least two wavelengths of optical radiation after attenuation by pulsatile blood within the tissue sites.

Claims (28)

1. A method for determining a congenital cardiac anomaly in an infant, the method comprising:

using a pulse oximeter to determine a first oxygen saturation measurement from a first tissue site on a first limb of a patient;

using the pulse oximeter to determine a second oxygen saturation measurement from at least one additional tissue site on a second limb of the patient;

automatically comparing said first oxygen saturation measurement to said second oxygen saturation measurement to determine the presence of a congenital cardiac anomaly of an infant, wherein said comparing computes a difference between said first oxygen saturation measurement and said second oxygen saturation measurement; and

determining and displaying an indication of the congenital cardiac anomaly on a display device of the pulse oximeter.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising detecting a patent ductus arteriosus, based at least in part, on a determination that said difference between said first oxygen saturation measurement and said second oxygen saturation measurement is substantially zero.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein detecting a patent ductus arteriosus is further based on a determination of a phase difference between a first plethysmograph measurement at said first tissue site and a second plethysmograph measurement at said second tissue site.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein said phase difference is substantially non-zero.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein detecting a patent ductus arteriosus is further based on a determination of a relative amount of damping between a first plethysmograph measurement at said first tissue site and a second plethysmograph measurement at said second tissue site.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein said relative amount of damping is substantially non-zero.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein said first limb of a patient is a right arm and said second limb of a patient is at least one of a left foot or a left hand.

8. A physiological monitor comprising:

interface componentry in communication with at least two sensors adapted to be positioned on tissue sites of a patient, said interface componentry having at least two outputs corresponding to signals received from said sensors and responsive to light transmitted through said tissue sites; and

at least one signal processor in communication with said interface componentry outputs, said at least one signal processor configured to:

receive a first output, from said interface componentry, associated with a first tissue site on a first limb of the patient;

receive a second output, from said interface componentry, associated with a second tissue site on a second limb of the patient;

determine at least one first oxygen saturation measurement from said first tissue site and at least one second oxygen saturation measurement from said second tissue site in response to said first output and said second output; and

compare said at least one first oxygen saturation measurement with said at least one second oxygen saturation measurement to determine the presence of a congenital cardiac anomaly of an infant and display an indication of the congenital cardiac anomaly.

9. The physiological monitor of claim 8 , wherein the at least one signal processor is further configured to determine said congenital cardiac anomaly is a patent ductus arteriosus, based, at least in part, on a determination that a difference between said at least one first oxygen saturation measurement and said at least one second oxygen saturation measurement is substantially zero.

10. The physiological monitor of claim 9 , wherein said at least one signal processor is further configured to:

determine plethysmograph measurements from said first tissue site and said second tissue site; and

compare at least one first plethysmograph measurement from said first tissue site with a second plethysmograph measurement from said second tissue site,

wherein said determination of said patent ductus arteriosus is further based on said comparison between said at least one first plethysmograph measurement and said at least one second plethysmograph measurement.

11. The physiological monitor of claim 10 , wherein said comparison between said at least one first plethysmograph measurement and said at least one second plethysmograph measurement identifies a phase difference between said at least one first plethysmograph measurement and said at least one second plethysmograph measurement.

12. The physiological monitor of claim 11 , wherein said phase difference is substantially non-zero.

13. The physiological monitor of claim 10 , wherein said comparison between said at least one first plethysmograph measurement and said at least one second plethysmograph measurement identifies a relative amount of damping between said at least one first plethysmograph measurement and said at least one second plethysmograph measurement.

14. The physiological monitor of claim 13 , wherein said relative amount of damping is substantially non-zero.

15. The physiological monitor of claim 8 , wherein said first limb of said patient is a right arm and said second limb of said patient is at least one of a left foot or a left hand.
