Abstract

Various methods and devices are described for retaining a medical implant within a body cavity. According to one aspect, at least a portion of a medical implant is positioned within a body cavity, and a wall of the body cavity is re-shaped such that the re-shaped wall prevents migration of the medical implant out of the body cavity. The re-shaped body wall may form a tissue pocket, tunnel, or other barrier against migration of the implant.

Claims (31)

1. A method of securing an implant in a gastro-intestinal tract of a patient, comprising:

creating a tissue fold in the gastro-intestinal tract such that a serosal layer of one portion of tissue contacts a serosal layer of another portion of tissue;

forming an aperture through the tissue fold; and

after forming the aperture, passing a portion of the implant through the aperture such that the portion contacts tissue defining the aperture.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein creating a tissue fold includes creating multiple tissue folds spaced apart from each other.

3. The method of claim 1 , further including securing the tissue fold using at least one tissue fastener spaced apart from the aperture.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the at least one tissue fastener includes a plurality of tissue fasteners.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the at least one tissue fastener includes a suture or a clip.

6. The method of claim 3 , wherein securing the tissue fold includes placing a plurality of tissue fasteners around the aperture.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implant includes a first section and a second section, wherein the first section has a larger cross-sectional area than the second section, and wherein passing a portion of the implant through the aperture includes passing the second section through the aperture.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implant includes a dumbbell shape.

9. A method of securing an implant in a gastro-intestinal tract of a patient, comprising:

creating a tissue fold in the gastro-intestinal tract such that a serosal layer of one portion of tissue contacts a serosal layer of another portion of tissue;

forming an aperture through the tissue fold;

securing the tissue fold using at least one tissue fastener spaced apart from the aperture, wherein when the tissue fold is secured, at least a portion of the tissue fastener passes through tissue; and

after forming the aperture, passing the implant through the aperture.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein creating a tissue fold includes creating multiple tissue folds spaced apart from each other.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the at least one tissue fastener includes a plurality of tissue fasteners.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the at least one tissue fastener includes a suture or a clip.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein securing the tissue fold includes placing a plurality of tissue fasteners around the aperture.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the implant includes a first section and a second section, wherein the first section has a larger cross-sectional area than the second section, and wherein passing the implant through the aperture includes passing the second section through the aperture.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein passing the implant includes passing the implant through the aperture such that the implant contacts tissue defining the aperture.

16. A method of securing a plurality of implants in a gastro-intestinal tract of a patient, comprising:

creating multiple tissue folds in the gastro-intestinal tract such that, for each tissue fold, a serosal layer of one portion of tissue contacts a serosal layer of another portion of tissue;

forming an aperture through each tissue fold;

securing each tissue fold using at least one tissue fastener spaced apart from the aperture; and

for each tissue fold, after forming the aperture, passing a portion of the implant through the aperture such that the portion contacts tissue defining the aperture.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the implant includes a first section and a second section, wherein the first section has a larger cross-sectional area than the second section, and wherein passing a portion of the implant through the aperture includes passing the second section through the aperture.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the at least one tissue fastener includes a plurality of tissue fasteners.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein the at least one tissue fastener includes a suture or a clip.

20. The method of claim 16 , wherein securing each tissue fold includes placing a plurality of tissue fasteners around the aperture of each tissue fold.
