Abstract

A prosthetic system that includes a prosthetic implant and a support structure secured to an inner surface of a cavity of a bone is disclosed. The support structure defines a channel that extends through the length of the support structure. The prosthetic implant is received in the channel, and a portion of the prosthetic implant is secured to an inner surface of the support structure by an adhesive. The support structure may comprise a pair of partially hemispherical components arranged in spaced apart relationship thereby defining the channel between the pair of components.

2. The acetabular system of claim 1 , wherein the support component has an external geometry implantable in the acetabular cavity, and wherein the support component, despite being formed with said porous metal material, is capable of being impacted and wedged, by itself, into the acetabular cavity for obtaining a press fit of the external geometry in the acetabular cavity.

3. The acetabular system of claim 1 , wherein the support component is formed with a metal alloy.

4. The acetabular system of claim 3 , wherein the support component is formed with a titanium alloy.

5. The acetabular system of claim 1 further comprising an adhesive connecting the support component to the acetabular cup implant.

6. The acetabular system of claim 5 , wherein the support component includes a rough surface finish into which said adhesive has interdigitated.

7. The acetabular system of claim 1 , wherein the support component has an established size and shape after formation and prior to being connected to said acetabular cup implant.

8. The acetabular system of claim 1 , wherein said outer surface of the support component is curved.

9. The acetabular system of claim 7 , wherein said established size and shape includes a convex outer surface of the support component.

10. The acetabular system of claim 1 , wherein the support component includes a curved inner surface facing an outer surface of the acetabular cup implant.

11. The acetabular system of claim 7 , wherein said established size and shape includes a concave inner surface of the support component.

12. The acetabular system of claim 7 , wherein said established size and shape includes a concave inner surface of the support component for facing a convex outer surface of the acetabular cup implant, the concave inner surface of the support component and the convex outer surface of the acetabular cup implant having matching curvatures.

13. The acetabular system of claim 7 , wherein said established size and shape includes the support component being partially-hemispherical with a convex outer surface for facing an inner surface of the acetabular cavity and a concave inner surface for facing a convex outer surface of the acetabular cup implant.

14. The acetabular system of claim 7 , wherein said established size and shape includes the support component having a shape approximating a quarter of a sphere with a convex outer surface for facing an inner surface of the acetabular cavity and a concave inner surface for facing a convex outer surface of the acetabular cup implant.

15. An acetabular system implantable in an acetabular cavity in a patient, comprising:

an acetabular cup implant; and

a support component for occupying an area in the acetabular cavity, the support component connected to the acetabular cup implant for supporting the acetabular cup implant in the acetabular cavity, the support component cupping a portion of the acetabular cup implant and including an outer surface for facing an inner surface of the acetabular cavity, the support component being formed separately from the acetabular cup implant for subsequent connection to the acetabular cup implant, the support component having an established size and shape after formation and prior to being connected to said acetabular cup implant, the support component capable of being impacted, by itself, into the acetabular cavity for obtaining a press fit of the support component in the acetabular cavity, the support component being formed with a porous metal material that is a bone ingrowth-receptive material with a porous structure for allowing bone of the patient to grow into and throughout the support component for restoring lost bone stock in the acetabular cavity in the area occupied by the support component when the support component is implanted in the acetabular cavity.
