Abstract

A medical procedure for positioning an embolic protection device effectively prevents material from entering with blood flow into side branch vessels of the aortic arch. The protection unit is permanently attached to a transvascular delivery unit at a connection point at a support frame that is at least partly arranged at a periphery of a selectively permeable unit. In an expanded state of the device, the connection point is enclosed by the support member or arranged at said support member.

Claims (33)

1. A collapsible embolic protection device for transvascular delivery to an aortic arch, said protection device comprising:

a delivery unit and

a protection unit comprising a selectively permeable material, a support frame, and a connection point configured for attachment to said delivery unit;

wherein:

said protection unit has a collapsed delivery state and an expanded state;

a perimeter of said support frame, in the expanded state of said protection unit, is shaped to releasably engage with vessel tissue of the aortic arch around the ostia of three side branch vessels such that said selectively permeable material covers said three of side branch vessel ostia;

said selectively permeable material is attached to or is integral with said support frame and allows blood to pass into said three side branch vessels but prevents embolic material in the blood from entering said three side branch vessels; and

said connection point arranged on said perimeter of said support frame at a proximal end thereof;

wherein said protection unit and said delivery unit are configured to be permanently connected at said connection point; and

wherein at a distal end of said protection unit, said support frame is shaped as a tongue forming an extension of the protection unit, and wherein the width of said tongue is narrower than the width of said distal end of said protection unit; whereby said tongue is configured to facilitate collapsing of said protective unit into its collapsed delivery state.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein said support frame and said delivery unit comprise a wire.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein said wire is bent at an angle such that the protection unit is arranged at said angle with the delivery unit in a longitudinal direction of said device.

4. The device of claim 3 , wherein said delivery unit is configured to be oriented toward the ostia of said three side branch vessels.

5. The device of claim 1 wherein, in the expanded state of the protection unit, a portion of the support frame is bent at an angle with respect to said perimeter of the support frame to form a stem of said support frame that extends at said angle from said perimeter.

6. The device of claim 5 , wherein said support frame comprises a wire forming the perimeter of said support frame and said stem comprises two branches of said wire that are joined at said connection point.

7. The device of claim 5 , wherein said connection point is positioned on said stem at a distance from said perimeter of said support frame.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein said support member comprises two wires affixed to each other at a proximal portion and at a distal portion of said protection unit to form said perimeter of said support frame and said selectively permeable material is arranged substantially planar between said wires.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the protection unit is configured to avoid contact with the three side branch vessels and the ostia of said three side branch vessels when in said expanded delivered state.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein said selectively permeable material is a rigid, non-elastic material that is which is non-conformable to ostia of aortic side branch vessels.

11. The device of claim 1 , wherein said selectively permeable material comprises a mesh of strands.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein said strands are made of a metallic material.

13. The device of claim 1 , and further comprising a strut configured to provide a counter force, such that said selectively permeable material resiliently returns to an initial position upon a mechanical compression when said protection unit is in said expanded delivered state.

14. The device of claim 1 , wherein the selectively permeable unit allows passage of blood flow from the aortic arch to the at least one side branch vessel and being adapted to prevent the embolic material from passage with said blood flow.

15. A collapsible embolic protection device for transvascular delivery to an aortic arch, said protection device comprising:

a delivery unit and

a protection unit comprising a selectively permeable material, a support frame, and a connection point configured for attachment to said delivery unit;

wherein:

said protection unit has a collapsed delivery state and an expanded state;

a perimeter of said support frame, in the expanded state of said protection unit, is shaped to releasably engage with vessel tissue of the aortic arch around the ostia of three side branch vessels such that said selectively permeable material covers said three side branch vessel ostia;

said selectively permeable material is attached to or is integral with said support frame and allows blood to pass into said three side branch vessels but prevents embolic material in the blood from entering said three side branch vessels;

said connection point is arranged on said perimeter of said support frame at a proximal end thereof; and

said connection point is arranged off-center at the embolic protection device such that said delivery unit is permanently connected off-center to said protection unit at said connection point; and

wherein at a distal end of said protection unit, said support frame is shaped as a tongue forming an extension of the protection unit, and wherein the width of said tongue is narrower than the width of said distal end of said protection unit, whereby said tongue is configured to facilitate collapsing of said protective unit into its collapsed delivery state.
