Abstract

The present invention provides an imaging probe for imaging mammalian tissues and structures using high resolution imaging, including high frequency ultrasound and optical coherence tomography. The imaging probes structures using high resolution imaging use combined high frequency ultrasound (IVUS) and optical imaging methods such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) and to accurate co-registering of images obtained from ultrasound image signals and optical image signals during scanning a region of interest.

Claims (19)

1. A method of imaging tissue surrounding a lumen of a vessel using a multi-modality imaging catheter, said multi-modality imaging catheter being configured to obtain images according to at least optical coherence tomography and intravascular ultrasound such that images obtained via optical coherence tomography are spatially co-registered with images obtained from intravascular ultrasound, said method comprising:

after insertion of said imaging catheter into the lumen, controlling said imaging catheter to emit first imaging energy into the tissue and receive first energy signals, thereby obtaining first image data, wherein said first imaging energy is associated with optical coherence tomography;

controlling said imaging catheter to emit second imaging energy into the tissue and receive second energy signals, thereby obtaining second image data, wherein said second imaging energy is associated with intravascular ultrasound; and

generating and displaying a composite image comprising:

a single luminal boundary contour identifying a luminal boundary of said vessel, wherein said single luminal boundary contour is generated by processing said first image data in the absence of processing said second image data; and

a single outer boundary contour identifying an outer boundary of said vessel, wherein said single outer boundary contour is generated by processing said second image data in the absence of processing said first image data.

2. The method according to claim 1 wherein one or both of said steps of processing said first image data and processing said second image data comprises performing pattern recognition using a pattern recognition algorithm.

3. The method according to claim 1 wherein one or both of said steps of processing said first image data and said second image data comprises identifying one or more tissue types.

4. The method according to claim 1 further comprising processing said first image data to identify a feature according to one or more of optical coherence tomography attenuation and optical coherence tomography polarization sensitivity.

5. The method according to claim 1 further comprising processing said first image data to identify a feature based on spectroscopic information.

6. The method according to claim 1 wherein said luminal boundary is identified according to an edge detection algorithm.

7. The method according to claim 1 further compromising:

processing at least said second image data within a region extending between the luminal boundary and the outer vessel boundary to estimate one or more tissue components within a vessel wall of the vessel;

wherein the composite image comprises a color map generated based on the estimated tissue components within the vessel wall.

8. The method according to claim 7 wherein the one or more tissue components are selected from the group consisting of calcified, fibrous, atheromatous, thrombotic, metallic and non-diseased regions.

9. The method according to claim 1 further comprising processing image data from two or more imaging modalities within a region of interest residing between the luminary boundary and the outer vessel boundary to generate an assessment of a composition.

10. The method according to claim 1 further comprising processing the second image data to identify a feature associated with shadowing.

11. The method according to claim 1 further comprising processing the first image data to identify a fibrous cap based on attenuation of the first image data.

12. The method according to claim 1 further comprising processing the first image data to identify a fibrous cap based on polarization sensitivity of the first image data.
