Abstract

The present invention relates to compounds suitable for use in mediating hypoxia inducible factor and for treating erythropoietin-associated conditions by increasing endogenous erythropoietin in vitro and in vivo.

Claims (25)

1. A method of increasing endogenous erythropoietin (EPO) in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of a compound of formula:

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester thereof.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the compound is a pharmaceutically acceptable salt.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the pharmaceutically acceptable salt is selected from the group consisting of sodium salt, potassium salt, calcium salt, magnesium salt, ammonium salt, tetraalkylammonium salt, hydrochloride salt, hydrobromide salt, tartrate salt, mesylate salt, acetate salt, maleate salt, and oxalate salt.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the compound is

5. A method of increasing reticulocyte levels in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount a compound of formula:

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester thereof.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the compound is a pharmaceutically acceptable salt.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the pharmaceutically acceptable salt is selected from the group consisting of sodium salt, potassium salt, calcium salt, magnesium salt, ammonium salt, tetraalkylammonium salt, hydrochloride salt, hydrobromide salt, tartrate salt, mesylate salt, acetate salt, maleate salt, and oxalate salt.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein the compound is

9. A method of increasing hematocrit in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of a compound of formula:

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester thereof.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the compound is a pharmaceutically acceptable salt.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the pharmaceutically acceptable salt is selected from the group consisting of sodium salt, potassium salt, calcium salt, magnesium salt, ammonium salt, tetraalkylammonium salt, hydrochloride salt, hydrobromide salt, tartrate salt, mesylate salt, acetate salt, maleate salt, and oxalate salt.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the compound is

13. A method of increasing the hemoglobin level in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of a compound of formula:

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester thereof.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the compound is a pharmaceutically acceptable salt.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the pharmaceutically acceptable salt is selected from the group consisting of sodium salt, potassium salt, calcium salt, magnesium salt, ammonium salt, tetraalkylammonium salt, hydrochloride salt, hydrobromide salt, tartrate salt, mesylate salt, acetate salt, maleate salt, and oxalate salt.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the compound is

17. A method of treating anemia in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of a compound of formula:

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester thereof.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the compound is a pharmaceutically acceptable salt.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the pharmaceutically acceptable salt is selected from the group consisting of sodium salt, potassium salt, calcium salt, magnesium salt, ammonium salt, tetraalkylammonium salt, hydrochloride salt, hydrobromide salt, tartrate salt, mesylate salt, acetate salt, maleate salt, and oxalate salt.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein the compound is
