Abstract

A method of host-directed illumination for verifying the validity of biometric data of a user is provided that includes capturing biometric data from a user with an authentication device during authentication and directing illumination of the biometric data from a host authentication system during the capturing operation. Moreover, the method includes comparing illumination characteristics of the captured biometric data against illumination characteristics expected to result from the directing operation, and determining that the user is a live user when the illumination characteristics of the captured biometric data match the illumination characteristics expected to result from the directing operation.

Claims (50)

1. A method of host-directed illumination comprising:

executing instructions, by a portable authentication device, received over a network from a host authentication computer hardware system while the authentication device captures biometric data from a user, the captured biometric data including illumination characteristics generated as a result of illuminating the biometric data during capture, the authentication device being remote from the host authentication computer hardware system;

separating the captured biometric data from the illumination characteristics;

determining illumination characteristic differences between sequential images, the sequential images being included in the captured biometric data;

comparing the determined illumination characteristic differences against corresponding expected illumination characteristic differences included in a user enrollment data record; and

determining the user is live when less than all of the determined illumination characteristic differences match the corresponding expected illumination characteristic difference.

2. A method in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising displaying, by the authentication device, at least one instruction or providing voice instructions notifying the user of received instructions.

3. A portable device used for host-directed illumination comprising:

a processor; and

a memory configured to store user enrollment data records, said memory being coupled to said processor and having instructions stored thereon which, when executed by said processor, cause said processor to perform operations comprising:

executing instructions received over a network from a host authentication computer hardware system remote from said device while said device captures biometric data from a user, the captured biometric data including illumination characteristics generated as a result of illuminating the biometric data during capture;

separating the captured biometric data from the illumination characteristics;

determining illumination characteristic differences between sequential images, the images being included in the captured biometric data;

comparing the determined illumination characteristic differences against corresponding expected illumination characteristic differences included in the user enrollment data record; and

determining the user is live when less than all of the determined illumination characteristic differences match the corresponding expected illumination characteristic difference.

4. A portable device in accordance with claim 3 , said processor being further caused to display at least one instruction or provide voice instructions for the user.

5. A method of determining user liveness comprising:

executing instructions, by a portable authentication device, received over a network from a host authentication computer hardware system while the authentication device captures biometric data from a user and tracks movement of an illumination region on the biometric data during capture, the authentication device being remote from the host authentication computer hardware system;

comparing, by the host authentication computer hardware system, captured biometric data illumination characteristics against illumination characteristics expected to result from said executing step; and

determining the user is live when the captured biometric data illumination characteristics match the illumination characteristics.

A method of determining user liveness in accordance with claim 5 , wherein the captured biometric data illumination characteristics are generated as a result of illuminating the biometric data during said capturing step, said comparing step comprising separating the captured biometric data from the captured biometric data illumination characteristics.

7. A method of determining user liveness in accordance with claim 5 , said determining operation comprising:

detecting curvature in an illuminated surface of the biometric data; and

detecting user liveness based on the curvature.

8. A method of determining user liveness in accordance with claim 5 , said executing step comprising:

repeatedly executing the instructions; or

executing a combination of instructions to generate a sequence of photographic images.

9. A method in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising:

repeatedly executing the instructions; or

executing a combination of instructions to generate a sequence of photographic images.

10. A portable device in accordance with claim 3 , said processor being further caused to preform operations comprising:

repeatedly executing instructions; or

executing a combination of instructions to generate a sequence of photographic images.

11. A method for determining user liveness comprising:

selecting, by a host authentication system, a different combination of instructions from an instruction listing for each authentication transaction;

executing, by an authentication device, the selected instructions during an authentication transaction, the selected instructions being received from the host authentication system, wherein biometric data captured during the transaction includes a captured biometric data component and illumination characteristics generated as a result of illuminating the biometric data; and

comparing the captured illumination characteristics against corresponding illumination characteristics expected to result from capturing the biometric data.

12. A method in accordance with claim 11 , further comprising determining the user is live when the captured illumination characteristics match the expected illumination characteristics.

13. A method in accordance with claim 11 , said comparing step further comprising:

comparing temporal changes in the captured illumination characteristics against temporal changes expected to result from capturing the biometric data; and

determining the user to be live when the temporal changes match.

14. A method in accordance with claim 11 , said executing step comprising varying illumination of the biometric data over time or projecting a detectable pattern onto the biometric data.

15. A method in accordance with claim 12 , further comprising:

after determining the user is live, comparing the captured biometric data against user enrollment biometric data; and

successfully authenticating the user when the captured and enrollment biometric data match.

16. A computer system for determining user liveness comprising:

a processor; and

a memory configured to store illumination instructions, said computer system being associated with a network and said memory being coupled to said processor and having instructions stored thereon which, when executed by said processor, cause said processor to:

select a different combination of illumination instructions from an instruction listing for each authentication transaction; and

compare illumination characteristics included in biometric data captured from a user against corresponding illumination characteristics expected to result from capturing the biometric data to determine whether the user is live, wherein the biometric data is captured while the selected illumination instructions are executed and the captured biometric data includes a biometric data component and illumination characteristics generated as a result of executing the selected instructions.
