Abstract

Systems and methods for automatically and dynamically modifying an image acquisition parameter for use in tomosynthesis breast imaging. A selected image acquisition parameter is modified in response to a measured characteristic of an imaged object such as a breast, and thus tailored to provide the highest quality image for the particular object. For example, image quality in a breast tomosynthesis system can be improved by dynamically varying motion and other acquisition parameters of the tomosynthesis system in response to physical characteristics of the breast to be imaged (determined during image acquisition), such as the breast thickness, density or composition. Dynamically varying acquisition or processing methods helps to customize the system for each particular patient, thereby improving image quality and identification and assessment of potential pathologies and abnormalities, and lower radiation dose, and thus a reduced the risk of long-term adverse health effects due to lifetime accumulated radiation dose.

Claims (36)

1. A method for acquiring a plurality of breast tissue images using an imaging system, the imaging system comprising an image acquisition device operatively associated with a system controller, the method comprising:

acquiring a first image of the breast tissue using the image acquisition device;

processing the first image using an image processor operatively associated with the controller to determine a physical characteristic of the breast tissue;

notifying a system operator of the determined physical characteristic of the breast tissue using an operator interface operatively associated with the controller;

receiving input from the system operator through the operator interface in response to the notification;

acquiring 2D image data, 3D image data, or both 2D and 3D image data, respectively, of the breast tissue based upon the received system operator input.

2. The method of claim 1 , the characteristic of the breast tissue comprising a density, a thickness, or a composition of the breast tissue.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein notifying the system operator comprises advising the system operator to acquire only 2D image data, only 3D image data, or both 2D and 3D image data, respectively, based upon the determined physical characteristic of the breast tissue.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the system operator input comprises a confirmation that only 2D image data, only 3D image data, or both 2D and 3D image data, respectively, is to be acquired of the breast tissue.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein only 3D image data of the breast tissue is acquired in response to the system operator input.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising notifying the system operator through the operator interface that at least one operating parameter of the image acquisition device should be modified prior to or during acquisition of the breast tissue image data based upon the determined physical characteristic of the breast tissue.

7. The method of claim 6 , the at least one modified operating parameter comprising one or both of a motion parameter and an exposure parameter of the image acquisition device.

8. The method of claim 1 , the first image being acquired by the image acquisition device emitting a first radiation dose that is substantially less than a second radiation dose used to acquire the respective 2D and/or 3D image data.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein notifying the system operator comprises advising the system operator that a setting of the image acquisition device should be modified prior to or during acquisition of the breast tissue image data based upon the determined physical characteristic of the breast tissue.

10. A method for acquiring a plurality of breast tissue images using an imaging system, the imaging system comprising an image acquisition device operatively associated with a system controller, the method comprising:

acquiring a first image of the breast tissue using the image acquisition device;

processing the first image using an image processor operatively associated with the controller to determine a physical characteristic of the breast tissue;

notifying a system operator of the determined physical characteristic of the breast tissue using an operator interface operatively associated with the controller;

receiving input from the system operator through the operator interface in response to the notification;

modifying at least one operating parameter of the image acquisition device based on the received operator input; and

acquiring a plurality of projection images of the breast tissue using the image acquisition device and the at least one modified operating parameter.

11. The method of claim 10 , the characteristic of the breast tissue comprising a density, a thickness or a composition of the breast tissue.

12. The method of claim 10 , the at least one modified operating parameter comprising one or both of a motion parameter and an exposure parameter of the image acquisition device.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein notifying the system operator comprises advising the system operator to modify the at least one operating parameter based upon the determined physical characteristic of the breast tissue prior to or during acquisition of the plurality of projection images of the breast tissue.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the received operator input comprises a confirmation that the at least one operating parameter is to be modified prior to or during acquisition of the plurality of projection images of the breast tissue.

15. The method of claim 10 , the first image being acquired by the image acquisition device emitting a first radiation dose that is substantially less than a second radiation dose used to acquire the plurality of projection images.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein notifying the system operator comprises advising the system operator that a setting of the image acquisition device should be modified prior to or during acquisition of the plurality of projection images of the breast tissue based upon the determined physical characteristic of the breast tissue.

17. A method for acquiring a plurality of breast tissue images using an imaging system, the imaging system comprising an image acquisition device operatively associated with a system controller, the method comprising:

acquiring a first image of the breast tissue using the image acquisition device, wherein the first image is acquired the image acquisition device emitting a first radiation dose;

processing the first image using an image processor operatively associated with the controller to determine a physical characteristic of the breast tissue;

advising a system operator using an operator interface operatively associated with the controller to acquire only 2D image data, only 3D image data, or both 2D and 3D image data, respectively, based upon the determined physical characteristic of the breast tissue;

receiving a confirmation from the system operator input through the operator interface that only 2D image data, only 3D image data, or both 2D and 3D image data, respectively, will be acquired of the breast tissue;

acquiring 2D image data, 3D image data, or both 2D and 3D image data, respectively, of the breast tissue after receiving the system operator confirmation, wherein a second radiation dose substantially higher than the first radiation dose is used to acquire the respective 2D and/or 3D image data.
