Abstract

An occipital fixation assembly is provided. The occipital fixation assembly includes a first mounting plate configured for placement within a sinus cavity adjacent a rear portion of a skull of a patient. A threaded post extends from the first mounting plate. A coupling member includes an aperture configured to receive the threaded post therethrough. The coupling member includes an offset extension configured to support a surgical rod thereon. A fixation nut configured to threadably engage the threaded post of the first mounting plate is rotatable about the threaded post and translatable therealong. The fixation nut is rotatable with respect to the first mounting plate and the coupling member such that rotation of the fixation nut in a predetermined direction brings the first mounting plate and the coupling member toward one another and into secured engagement with the skull of a patient.

Claims (19)

1. A method for attaching an occipital fixation assembly for subsequent attachment of a surgical rod thereon, comprising:

creating an aperture within a sinus cavity adjacent a rear portion of a skull of a patient;

positioning a first mounting plate of an occipital fixation assembly through the aperture created within the sinus cavity;

attaching a coupling member of the occipital fixation assembly to a threaded post of the first mounting plate;

positioning a fixation nut about the threaded post and, subsequently, rotating the fixation nut in a predetermined direction thereabout such that the first mounting plate and the coupling member move toward one another and into secured engagement with the skull of the patient; and

coupling a surgical rod to the coupling member.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein positioning the first mounting plate includes grasping the threaded post with a pair of forceps.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein positioning the first mounting plate includes grasping an aperture within the threaded post with the pair of forceps.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein coupling the surgical rod to the coupling member includes an offset extension of the coupling member having a non-threaded portion for receiving the surgical rod and a threaded portion for receiving a set screw.

5. The method according to claim 4 , wherein coupling the surgical rod to the coupling member includes placing the surgical rod into the non-threaded portion of the offset extension of the coupling member and securing the surgical rod thereto by tightening the set screw in the threaded portion.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein positioning the fixation nut about the threaded post includes coupling a wrench assembly to the threaded post.

7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein rotating the fixation nut in the predetermined direction includes advancing a wrench head member over an elongate body of the wrench assembly and rotating the wrench head member about the fixation nut such that the first mounting plate and the coupling member move toward one another and into secured engagement with the skull.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein creating the aperture within the sinus cavity includes creating the aperture with a drill configured for surgical use.

9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein positioning the first mounting plate includes engaging a slot in the threaded post of the first mounting plate with a screwdriver.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein positioning the fixation nut includes positioning a washer about the threaded post followed by positioning the fixation nut about the threaded post.

11. The method according to claim 1 , wherein attaching the coupling member of the occipital fixation assembly to the threaded post of the first mounting plate includes attaching the coupling member of the occipital fixation assembly to the threaded post, wherein the threaded post is integral to the first mounting plate.

12. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the first mounting plate has a plurality of barbs disposed on a top surface thereof configured to engage the skull when the fixation nut is rotated in a predetermined direction around the threaded post such that the first mounting plate and the coupling member move toward one another and into secured engagement with the skull.

13. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the coupling member further includes a plurality of barbs disposed on a bottom surface thereof configured to engage the skull when the fixation nut is rotated in a predetermined direction around the threaded post such that the first mounting plate and the coupling member move toward one another and into secured engagement with the skull.

14. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the first mounting plate includes a first plurality of barbs disposed on a top surface thereof and the coupling member further includes a second plurality of barbs disposed on a bottom surface thereof, wherein the first and second plurality of barbs are configured to engage the skull of a patient when the fixation nut is rotated in a predetermined direction around the threaded post such that the first mounting plate and the coupling member move toward one another and into secured engagement with the skull.
