Abstract

Methods, apparatus, and systems for the enablement of sending and receiving encrypted messages over Long/Short Wave, Low, High, Very High, or Ultra High Frequency Radio (LSW/HFR) provide for an interconnect between short or other message transmission over LSW/HFR, and other terrestrial or satellite based digital communications systems.

Claims (19)

1. A long distance wireless communications device for use with a handheld wireless communications device of the type designed for wirelessly communicating short messaging using short-wavelength wireless infrastructure using the handheld wireless communications device short messaging capability, the long distance wireless communications device comprising:

a housing that at least partially encases the handheld wireless communications device;

a data interface disposed in the housing, the data interface configured to interface with the handheld wireless communications device short messaging capability, the data interface being operatively coupled to a high frequency (HF) radio communications transceiver, the data interface being configured to enable the handheld wireless communications device to communicate a short message via the high frequency radio communications transceiver as another way to exchange the short message the handheld wireless communications device is capable of communicating using the short-wavelength wireless infrastructure;

the high frequency (HF) radio communications transceiver disposed in the housing and capable of operating in the high frequency (HF) range of 3 to 30 MHz, the high frequency (HF) radio communications transceiver providing short messaging wireless data communications on 3 to 30 MHz for long distance communication, thereby providing alternative, long distance wireless communications of short messaging to/from said handheld wireless communications device.

2. The long distance wireless communications device of claim 1 wherein the transceiver is configured to bypass external intermediate wireless communications infrastructure.

3. The long distance wireless communications device of claim 1 wherein the transceiver is configured to communicate point-to-point with a peer HF wireless receiver without requiring any external short-wavelength infrastructure beyond a peer wireless receiver.

4. The long distance wireless communications device of claim 1 wherein the transmitter transmits the short messaging wireless data communications in encrypted form even when the handheld wireless communications device is not structured to transmit the short messaging wireless data communications over the infrastructure in encrypted form.

5. The long distance wireless communications device of claim 1 wherein the data interface obtains short messaging data from the handheld wireless communications device in clear text and the device further includes a cryptographic component that encrypts the data communications before transmission by the high frequency radio communications transceiver.

6. The long distance wireless communications device of claim 1 wherein the housing comprises a sleeve.

7. The long distance wireless communications device of claim 1 wherein the housing is configured as a conventional outer case and/or extra battery for the handheld wireless communications device.

8. The long distance wireless communications device of claim 1 wherein the housing further contains a rechargeable battery used to power the handheld wireless communications device.

9. The long distance wireless communications device of claim 1 wherein the data interface interfaces with an app executing on the handheld wireless communications device, the app directing data to be sent to the device instead of over wireless communications built into the handheld wireless communications device.

10. The long distance wireless communications device of claim 1 wherein the short messaging comprises SMS text messages.

11. The long distance wireless communications device of claim 1 wherein the short messaging comprises text messages.

12. The long distance wireless communications device of claim 1 wherein the short messaging comprises messages not longer than 140 characters.

13. The long distance wireless communications device of claim 1 wherein the short messaging is user-authored.

14. The long distance wireless communications device of claim 1 wherein the handheld wireless communications device comprises a smart phone that, in response to use input, generates said short messaging in the form of text messages.

15. The long distance wireless communications device of claim 1 wherein the long distance comprises an intercontinental distance.

16. The long distance wireless communications device of claim 1 wherein the long distance exceeds 1000 Km.
